Special Sub-Topic: Also Known As...

"MacGyver": The eponymous lead character is often called "Mac", short for his last name. However, he has this name as his given name, Celtic/Gaelic for "one strength".

Angus. Angus MacGyver was played by Richard Dean Anderson. He won the role when the casting director noticed he used his glasses during his audition, showing a lack of pretension that the creative team wanted in their character. Aden means "little fire". Seamus means "supplanter", ans is the Gaelic form of James. Sean means "God is gracious", and is the Gaelic form of John.

"Happy Days": The Fonz - played by Henry Winkler - was also called Fonzie or Fonzarelli (his last name). But Mrs. Cunningham (Richie's mom and Fonzie's landlord) was the only person that called him by his given name, which means "bear".
Arthur. Arthur is another Gaelic name. The other choices: Eugene means "well-born" (English); Ernest means "earnest" (English); and Howard means "heart brave" (English). Howard was also Mr. Cunningham's name.

"Growing Pains": Mike Seaver's friend Boner (Andrew Koenig) got his nickname from his last name, Stabone. His first name was what?
Richard. Richard is an English name meaning "brave ruler". The other names: Randolph means "shield wolf" (English); Rudolph means "famous wolf" (not "shiny nose") (English); and Sylvester means "from the forest" (English). Boner's dad name was Sylvester; yep, Sylvester Stabone.

"Gilligan's Island": Gilligan (Bob Denver) was either called "Gilligan" or "Little Buddy" (by Skipper) throughout the series. His first name was never mentioned in an episode. But, series creator Sherwood Shwartz said he had a first name for Gilligan if the need to use it ever arose, which was what?
Willie. Willie (German; nickname of Wilhelm) means "strong-willed warrior". Billy (English; diminutive of William) means the same. Freddy (English; diminutive of Frederick) means "peace ruler". Sammy (English; diminutive of Samuel [Hebrew]) means "His Name Is God".

"Flintstones": Fred's boss - Mr. Slate (John Stephenson) - was usually only addressed as such. But his first name was mentioned in at least three different episodes. Trouble is, each time it was different. Which of the following was *not* a name attributed to Mr. Slate?
Stony. "Stony" was used as a Stone-Age pun on the name Tony Curtis, when he portrayed a Hollyrock actor that was sold as a "slave" to promote his latest movie, "Slave Boy".

"Babylon 5": Dr. Morden (Ed Wasser) was never addressed by his first name, but was listed in the series writer's bible as what?
Paul. Paul (Latin) means "small". Steven (Greek) means "crown". Tony (English; nickname of Anthony) means "priceless". David (Hebrew) means "beloved".

"Doogie Howser, M.D.": What was Doogie's real first name?
douglas & douglass & doug. "Douglas" (Celtic/Gaelic) means "dark water". Neil Patrick Harris played Doogie Howser. He went on to play Henry McNeeley in the short-lived "Stark Raving Mad" and Barney in the hit comedy "How I Met Your Mother".

"M*A*S*H": The gravel-voiced Sgt. Rizzo (G.W. Bailey) had this first name.
Luther. Luther (English) means "people army". Walter (English) means "army ruler". It was also Radar O'Reilly's real first name. Jay (Latin) means "a bird in the crow family". It was (supposedly) half of BJ Hunnicut's given name: Bea (his mother) and Jay (his father). Benjamin (English) means "Son Of My Right Hand". It was Dr. Hawkeye Pierce's real first name.

"Star Trek": Which of the following was *not* a full name of a regular character?
Pyotr Chekov. Pavel Checkov (Walter Koenig) was an only child. But in the "Star Trek" episode 'Day of the Dove', he imagines he had a brother Pyotr that was killed by Klingons, thus inciting him to violence. (Pavel and Pyotr are Russian versions of Paul and Peter, respectively.) Sulu and Uhura's first names weren't revealed during the series. But in books, they were given the names above. These eventually became canon. Engineer Scott - usually called Scotty by Kirk - had the given name Montgomery (English, meaning "from the hill of the powerful man"), which was revealed in the episode 'Wolf in the Fold'.

"Emergency!" : Dr. Brackett (Robert Fuller) had this first name.
Kelly. John Gage was one of the main firefighters. Joe Early was another doctor at Rampart General Hospital. Captain Hank Stanly was the captain of Station 51.
