Fun Trivia: S : Star Trek: Enterprise

Special Sub-Topic: 'Enterprise': 'Broken Bow,' Part 1

The very first scene of this episode shows a young Jonathan Archer and his father. How many years later does the Klingon crash-land on Earth?

    30. A small title card displays the words: 'Broken Bow, Oklahoma...30 years later.'

The theme song of the pilot episode of 'Enterprise' differs from the theme songs of 'Next Generation,' Deep Space Nine,' and 'Voyager' in what way?
It contains lyrics. I'm not a fan of this song at all...not that anyone asked.

Early in this episode, we meet several Vulcans, including Ambassador Soval. The actor playing this role was prominently featured in which previous science fiction television series?
'Alien Nation'. Gary Graham, who played Soval, also portrayed human LAPD Detective Matthew Sikes on the FOX series 'Alien Nation.'

The first time a human being tries to pronounce the word 'Klingon,' he makes a mistake. What does this officer call the alien before him?
'Klingot'. The Starfleet officer is quickly corrected.

What is the last name of the Oklahoma farmer who shot the Klingon refugee?
Moore. Mr. Moore tried to reason with the Klingon, but the language barrier prevented a peaceful exchange.

What is the name of the Klingon refugee?
Klaang. It's stated several times throughout the episode.

The word "poop" was spoken in this episode for the first time in "Star Trek" history.
    f. That priceless little landmark occurred several episodes later, in "Breaking the Ice." Archer and his crew spend some time answering questions from grade schoolers, and Tucker is asked to respond to "When you flush a toilet in space, where does it go?" Tucker, offended, says, "Aw, come on, Cap'n -- a poop question?"

Early in the episode, the crew is excited about reaching Warp 4.5 for the first time. According to Captain Archer, how many minutes, at that speed, would it take to go to Neptune and come back?
    6. A snail's pace compared to the speed of subsequent starships...but hey, this IS a hundred years before Kirk and company.

For the first time in any of the 'Star Trek' series, the captain has a dog on board. What is the name of Captain Archer's beagle?
Porthos. Captain Archer is apparently a fan of 'The Three Musketeers.'

It's revealed in this episode that Vulcan females possess an increased sensitivity in one of their five senses. Which is it?
smell. Specifically, T'Pol seems to react unpleasantly to the smell of Captain Archer's beagle...particularly when said beagle playfully puts his front paws on her leg.

We are treated to a nice bit of continuity when, at a ceremony celebrating the launch of the ENTERPRISE, an address from warp drive inventor Zephram Cochrane is played for the press. How long ago, in 'Enterprise' continuity, did Cochrane's historic warp drive expedition (chronicled in the motion picture 'Star Trek: First Contact') take place?
90 years. James Cromwell -- who played Cochrane in both 'Star Trek: First Contact' and this episode -- should probably get a new agent, as not a single close-up of him appeared during his historic address, which contained most of the language used in the 'prefaces' for 'Star Trek: The Original Series' and 'Star Trek: The Next Generation.'

Just before the ENTERPRISE achieves warp speed for the very first time in the episode, what does Captain Archer say?
'Let's go.'. Perhaps a bit informal by the standards set by the previous series, but it worked just fine for me.

Captain Jonathan Archer has lived in one American city for most of his life. Which is it?
San Francisco, CA. The perfect place for the child of a Starfleet engineer to grow up, since Starfleet is headquartered there.

Dr. Phlox admits an affinity for Chinese food to Captain Archer. What dish in particular does he mention?
Egg drop soup. The smiling, enigmatic physician is apparently a big fan of the appetizer menu.

Several references are made to the fact that Ensign Travis Mayweather grew up not on a planet, but in space, aboard a variety of cargo ships. What is the nickname given to a person with this type of life experience?
'boomer'. Mayweather's experience in artificial gravity allows him to find the ENTERPRISE's 'sweet spot,' a small area of the ship where gravity is...strange.

Sub-Commander T'Pol has spent most of her Earthside time at the Vulcan Compound. In which California city does this compound stand?
Sausalito. This fact is brought up during T'Pol's dinner with Captain Archer and Commander Tucker.

During T'Pol's dinner with Captain Archer and Commander Tucker, she is served a salad, as Vulcans are vegetarians. What is the main course enjoyed by Archer and Tucker?
steak. The extremely fit Earthmen seem to have no concerns about dining on such rich cuisine, even in the 22nd century. (See? It MUST be good for you!)

During this same dinner, as T'Pol discusses discipline, she accomplishes a minor dextrous feat. What is it?
She cuts a brittle breadstick with a knife and fork. A sure sign of the legendary Vulcan patience and tenacity.

Who is the first person to speak Vulcan in this episode?
Hoshi Sato. Hoshi spits a Vulcan phrase at T'Pol, who responds -- in English -- with only, 'I was instructed to speak English on this mission.' We never learn exactly what Hoshi said to her, but it sounded pretty nasty to me.

The alien race attempting to capture the Klingon refugee display several superhuman abilities. Which is NOT one of them?
None of the above. The Suliban appear to be quite the formidable enemy. Time will tell why they are not mentioned even once in 'ST:TOS,' 'ST:TNG,' 'ST:DS9,' or 'ST:VOY.'

What is the first inhabited planet visited by the ENTERPRISE crew?
Rigel X. One might wonder why Captain Archer seems never to have heard of the star Rigel -- don't we know about it even now, in 2003?

While attempting to translate the babbling of the Klingon refugee, Communications Specialist Hoshi Sato tells Captain Archer that the Klingon has uttered which seemingly useless phrase?
'stinky boots'. Dr. Phlox is quick to point out that since the Klingon is delirious, Yato's translation might in fact be completely correct.

What is the name of the Suliban who kisses Captain Archer?
Sarin. Archer seems to be channeling Kirk in this scene. Who kisses people from unknown species?

When the shuttlecraft from ENTERPRISE goes to land on the first populated planet they have ever encountered, they experience a particular weather condition that makes landing difficult. What is it?
a snowstorm. Despite the horrendous blizzard, the shuttlecraft lands safely.

I'll have another quiz about this episode online soon, but in the meantime, a final question. Commander Tucker witnesses an alien woman subjecting her son to what he thinks is child abuse. T'Pol informs Tucker that the child is only being weaned away from his dependence on a particular kind of gas. What is this gas?
methyl oxide. One can easily see why Tucker initially felt the need to intervene -- the child seems to be in agony.
