Fun Trivia: P : Presidential Quotes

Special Sub-Topic: Great Moments in Presidential Speeches

Which President said, "Well, when the President does it, that means it’s not illegal?”

Richard Nixon. In a TV interview with David Frost on May 19, 1977 Nixon attempted to explain his interpretation of Executive Privilege. Nixon was almost impeached and later resigned, but this idea seems to have continued on. (Clinton, Bush…)

Which President said, "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we?"
George W. Bush. On August 5th, 2004 President Bush gave a speech at the signing of a defense appropriations bill. He appeared to be reading his comments, yet somehow his admission of always thinking of new ways to harm the country wasn’t caught by any of his writers. Maybe it was put in there on purpose, or maybe it was an oversight, either way, it makes you rest easy knowing who is at the head of the country.

Which President said, “My choice early in life was either to be a piano-player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference?”
Harry S. Truman. President Truman was known to be a fairly good pianist, and with enough prodding, he would even entertain guest at state dinners. He specialized in Barrelhouse music, a raucous precursor of Jazz, and after one especially boisterous performance he made the above comment.

Which President, after making a demonstration call on Alexander Graham Bell’s newly invented telephone remarked, "That's an amazing invention, but who would ever want to use one of them?"
Rutherford B. Hayes. President Hayes obviously changed his mind about the telephone; he had the first telephone installed in the White House.

Which President confused us all by saying, "Depends on what your definition of is is?"
Bill Clinton. On August 17th, 1998, During a Grand Jury examination regarding his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, Clinton pulled this zinger out of his hat.

Who stated, "I have often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can't get my wife to go swimming?"
Jimmy Carter. I know that you were thinking that the logical choice would be Ted, but remember this is a quiz about Presidents! Carter also once admitted in a 1976 Playboy interview that, "I've looked on a lot of women with lust. I've committed adultery in my heart many times.”

Which President boasted, “Well, on the manhood thing, I'll put mine up against his any time?”
George H.W. Bush. Walter Mondale, candidate for President in 1984, took offence to a comment made by then Vice-President George Bush regarding marines killed in Beirut. Mondale demanded an apology, and when he didn’t get one, he said, “George Bush doesn’t have the manhood to apologize.” Bush, I guess, felt the need to defend his manhood.

Which President shocked everyone when he proclaimed, "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes?"
Ronald Reagan. This is my favorite Presidential quote of all time, and the inspiration behind this quiz. During the 1984 Presidential campaign President Reagan said this during a sound check as a joke for the technicians and reporters in the room. Unfortunately, unknown to him, they were broadcasting. Russia was offended, of course, but deep down I bet they thought it was pretty funny.

Who told us all that "People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like?"
Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln had been asked to write a review of a book that he particularly did not care for.

Which Presidential sports fan was a little confused when he told the country, "I love sports. Whenever I can, I always watch the Detroit Tigers on the radio?"
Gerald Ford. Ford was actually born Leslie Lynch King, Jr., but his parents divorced when he was young, and when his mother remarried he took the name of his stepfather. He passed up a chance to play professional ball for Detroit, and instead chose politics, though he remained a radio watching Tigers fan.

Who, as President, told a friend, "I must go to dinner, but I wish it was to eat a pickled herring, a Swiss cheese and a chop at Louis' instead of the French stuff I shall find?"
Grover Cleveland. Grover Cleveland was a bachelor when he took office in 1885, and he was not comfortable with comforts of the White House. He married Frances Folsom in June of 1886, being the first President to marry in the White House.

Which procrastinating President inspired us all with this gem: “There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the fun is having lots to do and not doing it.”
Andrew Jackson. As President, Jackson sought to be the representation of the common man. If you ask me, the above quote pretty much sums most of us up.

Which President eloquently said, “Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in?”
Lyndon B. Johnson. The “him” that Johnson was referring to was J. Edgar Hoover, the head of the FBI. Johnson wanted to remove him, but realized how difficult it would be, and decided that he could live with it.

Who cautioned us "Never attempt to murder a man who is committing suicide?"
Woodrow Wilson. Wilson tried to maintain US neutrality throughout World War I, but eventually unrestricted German submarine warfare brought the US into the war.

Who stated the obvious when they said, “When a great many people are unable to find work, unemployment results?”
Calvin Coolidge. As the economy worsened and unemployment was rising, people were wondering what was the cause. Luckily Coolidge was there to set us all straight.
