When the American League began in 1901, Cleveland submitted the Blues, then became the Bronchos in 1902, the Naps in 1903, then finally the Indians in 1915. The Indians' name came from the first American Indian to play in Cleveland. He was Louis Sockalexis who played for the Cleveland Spiders of the National League in 1897.
