Special Sub-Topic: St. George Dragons

What year did the St George Dragons first play?

1921. They joined the NSWRL to make it a 9 nine team competition, necessitating a bye every round.

What was the first team St George ever beat?
Newtown. Round 5, 1921 at the Sydney Sports Ground: Newtown v St George 9-11. They were actually very unlucky to lose their first ever match in round 1, Glebe v St George 4-3, also at the Sydney Sports Ground.

In 1928, St George only lost 2 matches, one in round 2 and the other was when?
Major semi final. Despite being minor premiers with an impressive 12-1 record, the Saints lost to Souths in the major semi-final 13-5 and missed out on their chance at the premiership. Souths went on to beat Easts in the Final.

When did St George collect its first premiership?
1941. They scraped into the finals that year in fourth spot, with 8 wins and a draw from their 14 games. They smashed Balmain by 32-8 in the minor semi-final, before going on to beat Easts in the final 31-14.

St George are very famous for their 11 consecutive premierships from 1956-1966. In how many of these years were they NOT minor premiers?
    1. In 1961, Wests were minor premiers, albeit on percentages, as both teams won 15 and lost 3 matches that year. Saints beat Wests 9-4 in the major semi, and went on to repeat the dose and keep the run alive by beating Wests 22-0 in the Grand Final.

How did St George's premiership streak end in 1967?
They were minor premiers but lost their semi final and the preliminary final. Despite being minor premiers YET AGAIN, Saints couldn't make it 12 in a row. They lost to Souths in the major semi-final 13-8, then in the Preliminary Final, Canterbury defeated them 12-11.

What season marked St George's last as a stand-alone club?
    1998 & 98. In 1999 they became the St.George-Illawarra Dragons.

What result did they achieve in their last year (as a stand-alone club)?
Made the semis but lost the first match. Came 8th out of the 20 teams in the competition, meaning they faced Canterbury who came 9th. The Bulldogs beat the Saints 20-12.

Which wine-maker sponsored the Saints from 1977-1995?
Penfolds & Penfold. Newmans motor group took over after this.

As a stand-alone club the St. George Dragons won ____ premierships, ____ minor premierships, and came runners-up ____ times?
15,15,13. An incredible record: their 15 wins were the 11 consecutive 1956 to 1966 plus 1941, 1949, 1977 and 1979 (and they 'won' the wooden spoon on only 3 occasions - 1922, 1926 and 1938). Hope you liked the quiz.
