Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. St George enjoyed an unprecented period of success in the 1950s and 1960s. How many premierships did they win in succession in during those 2 decades?

Answer: 11

St George won 11 premierships in a row between 1956 and 1966. In the end the rules were changed to thwart them.
2. Which player was known as 'Puff, the magic dragon'?

Answer: Reg Gasnier

Whilst all of these players are all time greats - Reg was perhaps the greatest of them all. Langlands, Raper and Gasnier have all been made named Rugby League immortals - a title that only a handful can claim (and they all played in the same side).
3. In 1998 St George merged with which club?

Answer: Illawarra

The merger was more like a takeover, with St George the dominant party. The newly merged entity made the Grand Final in their first year and led with just 5 minutes to go before going down 20-18 to Melbourne Storm.
4. How many Grand Finals did St George lose during the 1990s?

Answer: 4

They lost in 1992 and 1993 to the Brisbane Broncos, in 1996 to Manly-Warringah and in 1999 to Melbourne Storm.
5. Which St George player copped a 12 month suspension for eye gouging in the 1980s?

Answer: Steve Linnane

Linnane went from competition leading try scoring in his first year to a 12 month suspension just 2 years later - he never really made it back.
6. What is St George's vocal supporter group known as?

Answer: The red and white army

We are red, we are white, we are simply dynamite.
7. Which player captained St George in the 1985 first grade Grand Final?

Answer: Craig Young

Brian Johnston captained St George in the 1993 Grand Final - his last game before retirement. Brian Johnson was the St George Reserve Grade captain in 1985 and they won the premiership. Graham Wynn was a log.
8. Who did St George defeat in the 1977 Grand Final?

Answer: Parramatta

The first ever tied Grand Final (9 all at full time). St George won the replay keeping the Eels scoreless. Coincidentally the Grand Final was tied again the following year and in the replay Manly kept Cronulla scoreless.
9. True or False: Phil Blake played in a Grand Final for St George?

Answer: True

Blake played in the 1992 and 1993 Grand Finals for St George (one of the 6 clubs he played for). The Dragons had much success with the mousetrap play developed specifically for Blake.
10. Who was the St George captain in 2002?

Answer: Trent Barrett

Smith was St George captain in 2001. Thompson captained the Dragons in Barrett's and Smith's absence.
