Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a first grade team, St George began, in humble surroundings, in what year?

Answer: 1921

In 1921, Hurstville Oval in the south of Sydney, was home for the St George team (they trained at Kogarah) and used what was a hay and corn shed as changerooms! They were given two years to prove themselves a worthwhile addition to the first grade, or they would be withdrawn from the league!
2. The Dragon's first game was at the Sydney Sports Ground against Glebe on 23rd April 1921. What was the score?

Answer: 4-3

St George were unlucky to lose, scoring the only try of the match but missing every one of their five attempts at goal. Glebe had been runners-up in the premiership of the previous year but, it was said of the match, "not remarkable for its brilliancy".
3. In which year did St George win its inaugural First Grade Premiership?

Answer: 1941

Twenty years after their inception, St George, captained by Nev Smith (who was also their coach) won in brilliant fashion, 31-14 against Eastern Suburbs, scoring seven tries to four at the Sydney Cricket Ground to take their debut First Grade Premiership.
4. In 1925, St George moved their home from Hurstville Oval to Earl Park. In what southern suburb of Sydney was Earl Park?

Answer: 1930, 1933 and 1937

St George finished as runners-up in 1927, as well as 1930, 1933 and 1937. Having finished equal last in 1926, the Dragons purchased the great Frank Burge from Glebe to be their captain/coach for the 1927 season - they paid a then record 200 pounds for him!
6. In 1935 whom did St George defeat by a record-setting score of 91-6?

Answer: Canterbury-Bankstown

"The Dragon Slayers" as they were known defeated the Bulldogs in a massive display of superiority. It was still the biggest win in the St George Football Club's history, when they merged with the Illawarra Steelers to form the joint venture club, St. George-Illawarra Dragons, in 1999.
7. Who, in 1921, scored the first ever try for the St George Dragons?

9. In which Town Hall, in 1908, was an unsuccessful attempt made to launch the Dragons?
