1. What was the Roman name for York?

Answer: Eboracum

York was founded by the Romans in 71AD, and was one of only three permanently manned Roman fortresses in England. Vectis is the Isle of Wight, Luguvalium is Carlisle, and Deva is Chester.
2. York was also a Viking settlement. What did the Vikings call York?

Answer: Jorvik

Jorvik became a Viking settlement in 866AD. Eoforwic was the Anglo-Saxon name for York. The other two choices I made up!
3. Which of these is NOT one of the four main "Bars" surrounding the city walls ?

Answer: Coppergate Bar

There are four main "Bars" (or gatehouses) surrounding the city walls, the one missing is Bootham Bar. Coppergate is the name of a street.
4. To which Saint is York Minster dedicated?

Answer: St Peter

York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world. Work on the present Minster began in 1220. In 1984 the Minster was almost destroyed by a fire, thought to have been started by a lightning strike.

The Yorkshire Museum is situated (appropriately) in the Museum Gardens. The National Railway Museum was opened in York in 1975, and is the largest of its kind in the world. It contains some of the UK's best known trains, including the Mallard, which is one of the fastest steam locomotives ever built, having achieved a speed of 126 MPH.

The Castle Museum is on the site of the old prison (which was the former site of York castle).

Answer: The Shambles

The Shambles gets its name from the Saxon word "Fleshammels" Which means street of the butcher, as most of the shops were butchers. The Shambles is also mentioned in the Domesday book!
7. Which tower is situated close to the "eye" of York?

Answer: Clifford's Tower

Clifford's tower gets its name from Roger De Clifford who was hanged there in 1322.
8. Which Roman Emperor died in York in 306AD?

Answer: Constantius

Constantius was the father of Constantine, the first ever Christian Roman Emperor. The Emperor Septimius Severus also died in York, in the year 211AD.
9. What is the name of the main river flowing through York?

Answer: Ouse

The Ouse is formed from the confluence of the river Swale and river Ure. There is also another river flowing through York, the Foss.
10. What is the name of York racecourse?

Answer: Knavesmire

The modern York racecourse was founded in 1731. It was previously the site for public hangings, and in 1739 the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin was hanged here. Prestbury Park is Cheltenham racecourse, the Roodeye is Chester, and Town Moor is Doncaster.
