Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What meat packing company brought Spam to the market?

Answer: Hormel

In 1937, Hormel debuted Spam as a precooked meat product, sold in cans. The original contains (from what is on a can of original Spam): pork, ham, salt, water, potato starch, sodium nitrite, and aspic.
2. What did the letters Spam mean originally?

Answer: Spiced ham

The SP is for spice. The AM is the last two letters of ham.
3. If your vacation itinerary includes a tour of the Spam Museum, to where would you travel?

Answer: Austin, Minnesota

This southern Minnesota city hosts the Spam Museum as well as one of Hormel Foods plants, which has been the largest private employer in the city. It is also the national corporate headquarters of Hormel.

Besides the film on the history of Spam, the museum has collections of advertising and how the images on the can have evolved. Also, ladies will supply you with samples of their product. Johnny's SPAMarama Spam restaurant is across the street from the Spam Museum in Austin, Minnesota.
4. What is the total production of various Spam products?

Answer: About eight billion since 1937

It has been estimated that 3.8 cans of Spam are consumed every second in the United States. In 2007, distribution topped seven billion. Spam has become international with brisk distribution, not only in the United States and its territories but also in the United Kingdom and Asia. Each culture seems to develop its own recipes to utilize Spam. Spam has been sold in at least 41 countries.
5. Dietitians criticize Spam as being high in ___ and _____.

Answer: Fat and sodium

Spam is high in fat. A two ounce serving contains 55% of the recommended daily allowance of fat, 25% fat and 30% saturated fat. A two ounce serving also contains 33% of the recommended daily allowance of sodium.

The same serving has negligible sugar, no fiber, and is very low in essential vitamins. The cholesterol count is 13% of the daily allowance. Hormel has tried to meet these challenges by producing lower fat and lower sodium meats.
6. Which of the 50 U.S. states consumes the most Spam per capita?

Answer: Hawaii

Hawaiians consume just under six cans of Spam a year per person. It was introduced to the islands by World War II servicemen. Reasons for its popularity include that fresh meat was relatively expensive in Hawaii. Spam, on the other hand, is inexpensive, can last over three years in a can, is durable and portable, and fits well into Asian cuisine recipes.

In addition, it has grown into a comfort food reminding Hawaiians of childhood.
7. Hormel produces a wide variety of adaptations of Spam. Which of these is NOT a type of Spam?

Answer: Spam Salmon

Here is a list of some Spam products:

SPAM Classic Original
SPAM Hot&Spicy with Tabasco flavor
SPAM Jalapeņo
SPAM Less Sodium
SPAM Lite
SPAM Oven Roasted Turkey
SPAM Hickory Smoke flavor
SPAM Spread
SPAM with Bacon
SPAM with Cheese
SPAM Garlic

There will likely be more choices if Hormel tries to keep pace the market.
8. While you are at the Spam Museum, which of these would you NOT be able to find?

Answer: Spam Treet

Armour Packing, a competitor, makes Treet, a product that is comparable to Spam. Otherwise, there is a wide variety of collectibles and souvenirs available at the Spam Museum and on-line.
9. Electronic spam can harm your computer, be a daily irritation, and be a trap for capturing private personal information. Which of these is NOT an effective way of stopping or reducing spam email?

Answer: Reply and ask that they not contact you again

Spamers have a number of techniques for capturing email addresses. It is futile to ask them to stop as they already have it. Do your best to protect yourself and the email addresses of people on your email list. Software may help as well as having a 'junk' email for diversion. Don't check boxes for third party offers.

But then again you may not get that ten million dollars promised to you by that banker in Nigeria if you don't reply!
10. What is the name of the comedy group that utilized spam as part of their comedy routine?

Answer: Monty Python

The Monty Python group first used 'spam' as an adaptation of 'Camelot' at a celebration of Prince Charles' 60th birthday. They sang:

"If Spamalot is hot
And you like it, or per'aps not.
A bunch of knights in search of Holy Grails.
When you're 60 years of age
And your mum won't leave the stage,
It's good to know that you're still Prince of Wales"

Later Eric Idle adopted "Spamalot" as the Broadway musical version of the film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975). It received 14 Tony nominations and won best musical of 2005.

It seemed that audiences liked the word 'spam', although there are few references to the product itself. Its intent was a spoof on Camelot.
