Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. While Lee Geum-Ja has Mr Baek held hostage, she makes a couple of attempts to kill him, before settling on shooting him non-fatally. Where does she shoot him?

Answer: Feet

Lee Geum-Ja originally plans to kill Mr Baek, but while trying to do this she learns that Won-Mo was not his only victim, and changes her plans so she can allow the parents of the murdered children to confront him. Before leaving to gather evidence, she shoots Mr Baek through both of his feet, possibly to make it even more difficult for him to escape.
2. What is Detective Choi's reaction upon seeing the video tapes found in Mr Baek's apartment?

Answer: He vomits.

Lee Geum-Ja, Park Lee-Jeong, and Detective Choi turn Mr Baek's apartment upside down in an attempt to find evidence of the other murders. Detective Choi agrees to be a part of this after Lee Geum-Ja points out to him that the children may still be alive if he had not been so ready to accept her confession, knowing that she was innocent. Eventually, Lee Geum-Ja finds five video tapes strapped to the underside of his desk, each showing the torture and/or murder of one of the children. Detective Choi is so horrified that he has to leave the room to throw up, while Park Lee-Jeong cannot even look at the screen.
3. Which of the following was NOT one of Mr Baek's victims?

Answer: Woo-Tae

Along with Won-Mo, Mr Baek also kidnaps and kills Se-Hyun, Dong-Hwa, Eun-Joo, and Yoo Jae-Kyeong. All of the children were students at schools in wealthy neighbourhoods. As a teacher, Mr Baek would work at one of the schools on a temporary basis so that he could decide which child to take, and he would always make sure to choose a child who was not a member of his own class.
4. What was Mr Baek saving the ransom money for?

Answer: He wanted to buy a yacht.

When the parents of the murdered children discover that Mr Baek has no children of his own, they find it difficult to understand what he would need all the ransom money for. Lee Geum-Ja then has the unpleasant task of telling them that their children's lives were taken just so that Mr Baek could achieve his dream of owning a yacht.
5. The parents decide between themselves who will torture Mr Baek. Who takes part from Won-Mo's family?

Answer: His mother

While the group try to decide whether to hand Mr Baek over to the police, or take matters into their own hands, Won-Mo's father seems to be the most reluctant of all to agree to torture and kill him. The other parents are far more keen on revenge, believing that the police cannot fully bring Mr Baek to justice.

Although Won-Mo's mother is said to have a weak heart, she takes some sedatives and becomes the first of the parents to meet with Mr Baek.
6. Before the parents enter the room with Mr Baek, what advice does Detective Choi give them?

Answer: How to hold a knife safely

Won-Mo's mother is about to enter the room, when Detective Choi notices that she is holding the knife incorrectly. He takes it from her, and demonstrates to all the parents how to hold it so that the blade will not slip, and will not cut their hands. He tells them that it may be easier just to use a stabbing motion.
7. Which weapon is used to finally kill Mr Baek?

Answer: Scissors

The final person to enter the room is the grandmother of Eun-Joo. Instead of being in the room for some time, like the other parents had been, she enters and returns almost immediately, seemingly calm. As the camera pans across to Mr Baek, we see him dead, with Eun-Joo's pair of school scissors sticking out of the back of his neck.
8. How do the parents ensure that none of them will go to the police and blame the other participants for the murder?

Answer: They take a group photograph.

After the murder, Detective Choi takes a photograph of all of the parents, along with their weapons and their blood-stained coats. Lee Geum-Ja does not participate in the photograph. Apart from the photograph, Lee Geum-Ja threatens the parents, saying that she killed while in prison, and planned for thirteen years to catch Mr Baek, leaving an open-ended implication that she would kill anyone who betrayed the group.
9. While the group buries Mr Baek, Lee Geum-Ja asks them to stop so that she can do what to the body?

Answer: Shoot it

After the murder, the group bury Mr Baek, along with their weapons, cleaning materials, and the chair he was sitting on. Lee Geum-Ja asks them to let her have a moment, during which she uses her gun to shoot Mr Baek in the face, as per her original plan. After this, she buries the custom-made gun along with him.
10. When everyone is sitting together in the bakery, which song do they sing?

Answer: Happy Birthday

All of the parents gather at the Na Ru Sae bakery after the murder, and Lee Geum-Ja presents them with a cake and candles. One of the parents begins to sing "Happy Birthday", and the other parents all join in. When they reach the part where the name is mentioned, they all pause, thinking about their lost children.
11. Why does everyone leave the bakery when Geun-Shik arrives?

Answer: They notice it is snowing outside.

As Geun-Shik enters the building, everyone turns to look at him and all notice that it is snowing heavily outside. They are all excited by this, and rush to go outside. Geun-Shik initially seems surprised to see so many people in the bakery at such a late hour.
12. Lee Geum-Ja finally encounters Won-Mo's ghost while she is in the bathroom, doing what?

Answer: Removing her makeup

Her plan completed, Lee Geum-Ja goes into the bathroom to remove her red eyeshadow. Since leaving prison, she had worn the colour in order to help her look more harsh and less kind-hearted, but now that she was no longer out for revenge, she no longer needed to look this way.
13. Lee Geum-Ja is alerted to the presence of Won-Mo's ghost when his marble rolls towards her on the floor. What is Won-Mo doing when Lee Geum-Ja turns to look at him?

Answer: Smoking

As the marble rolls towards her, Lee Geum-Ja turns around to see a vision of Won-Mo as he would now look as an adult. He stares calmly at her while smoking a cigarette. We know from earlier in the film that Lee Geum-Ja had dreamed of this moment so that she could beg for his forgiveness, but as she opens her mouth to do so, Won-Mo gags her with the same piece of material she had used to gag Mr Baek.
14. What is the advice Lee Geum-Ja gives to Jenny as they stand in the snow at the end of the film?

Answer: Live white

Lee Geum-Ja produces a block of tofu, similar to the one she refused to take from the preacher upon leaving the prison. She presents it to Jenny, telling her "Be white, live white, like this", not wanting Jenny to grow up and do the things that she herself has done.
15. When Lee Geum-Ja buries her face in the tofu block, how does Jenny react?

Answer: Hugs her

After telling Jenny to "live white", Lee Geum-Ja becomes upset, realising that she too needs to start living this way. She buries her face in the tofu, eating it ravenously. After her refusal to eat the tofu at the beginning of the film, Lee Geum-Ja is now ready to accept the symbolic purification. Though Jenny is initially shocked at her mother's actions, she walks behind her and hugs her.
