Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. AMERICAN FOOTBALL: Winning the first two Super Bowls, which team was the first to win back-to-back Super Bowls?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

They won 35-10 over Kansas City in January 1967, and 33-14 over the Raiders in January 1968. Those two Super Bowls marked three straight National Football League titles for the team, as they won the final pre-Super Bowl championship as well, 23-12 vs. Cleveland Browns.

2. AMERICAN FOOTBALL - Which NFL team play their home games in Tampa Bay?

Answer: Buccaneers

The Buccaneers franchise started out pretty ugly in 1976, going winless in their debut season. However, they would achieve the ultimate goal in Super Bowl XXXVII, as they walloped the Oakland Raiders.

3. BASEBALL: There is a very intense rivalry between the New York Yankees and which team?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox have had a rivalry ever since their beginnings. One reason that contributed to the rivalry was the trading of Babe Ruth in 1919. After the Red Sox traded him to the Yankees, the Sox never won a World Series until 2004 (which was 86 years after their previous WS win in 1918).

It is not prudent to be a Red Sox fan in New York and vice versa.

4. NAME THE SPORT - Which sports event did British olympic gold-medalist, Daley Thompson, describe as "nine Mickey Mouse events and the 1,500"?

Answer: Decathlon

Daley Thomas was a famous decathlete, winning a gold medal in the 1980 Moscow olympics. The decathlon includes ten events held over two days: 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter run on the first day then 110-meter hurdle, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run on the second day.

The 1,500 meter run was considered the most difficult, hence Thompson's comment.

5. CYCLING - performance-enhancing drugs - What medicine, developed for the treatment of leukaemia and anaemia, became a household name for doping in the 'peloton' during the 90s? [ Hint: Lance Armstrong used the code name Edgar Allan or Poe]

EPO (short for erythropoetin) is a hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells. Although used in the treatment of leukaemia and anaemia, doctors working in professional cycling soon realised the potential benefit for athletes. Extra red blood cells equals a more efficient distribution of oxygen to the muscles equals better performance.

A 2012 report by USADA (the US Anti Doping Agency) brought to light a widespread use of EPO in the 'peloton' ever since the mid 90s, as a result of which Lance Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles.
