Answer: Bernie Parent

Several players drafted by the Flyers ended up being important parts of their Stanley Cup runs in 1973-74 & 1974-75. Those players included Ed Van Impe, Gary Dornhoefer, & Joe Watson. But no player was more important than goalie Bernie Parent whom the Flyers plucked from the Bruins.

The Flyers #2 pick was also a goalie, Doug Favell and the 2 became a pretty formidable 1-2 goaltending duo.
4. Speaking of Bernie Parent, during the 1970-71 season the Flyers made a tough decision to deal one of their young goalies because of the need for more scoring. In a 3 team trade that involved the Bruins the Flyers were able to trade for Rick MacLeish who became a Flyers legend. The Bruins were team #3 in this trade, who was team #2 where Bernie was traded?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

When Bernie arrived in Toronto, his fellow goaltender was his idol and mentor the legendary Jacques Plante. Plante worked with Bernie on technique which ultimately turned Bernie, already a formidable goalie, into one of the best of all time. Bernie, after his contract expired, opted for the new WHA but after his one and only season the Flyers traded Doug Favell to Toronto for Parent's rights. All Parent did was immediately help the Flyers win a championship.
5. The Flyers won their first ever regular season game.

Answer: False

The Flyers began their first season on the road against the California Seals and lost 5-1.
6. In the first year of the expansion, the new teams were all placed in the new West division while the Original 6 teams were in the East meaning that an expansion team was going to reach the Stanley Cup Finals. The Flyers not only won the division but also made their way to the Finals.

While the Flyers did win the new West Division, albeit with a losing record of 31-32-11, they were beaten in the opening round of the playoffs 4 games to 3 by the eventual finalists St. Louis Blues.
7. During their first season in the storied Philadelphia Spectrum, part of the roof of the Spectrum blew off forcing the Flyers to go on the road to play "home" games. One game was played as Madison Square Garden in NYC and the other was played at Maple Leaf Gardens, before the Flyers set up a "home" base in what city until the Spectrum was repaired?

Answer: Quebec City

The Flyers temporary home was in Quebec City home of their minor league affiliate the Quebec Aces. This was their home for a month before returning home in time for the playoffs.
8. During the Flyers early years they relied on speed and scoring. However, the St. Louis Blues and more specifically the Plager brothers would physically dominate the smaller Flyers. Owner Ed Snider and GM Keith Allen decided that they were no longer going to be the intimidated but rather the intimidators and started drafting bigger more physical players. The 1969 draft proved to be their most fruitful in this endeavor. Not only was future captain and hall of famer Bobby Clarke taken in the 2nd round but their 5th and 6th round picks became two of the centerpieces of the Broad Street Bullies, 6'3" Don "Big Bird" Saleski was taken in the 6th round. What enforcer was taken in the 5th round?

Answer: Dave Schultz

The "Hammer" who he became to be known, job was to protect Clarke, now an NHL superstar which is why he was put on the same line. Because of this he ended up scoring the series winning goal against the Atlanta Flames in the 1974 quarter finals and was on the ice when Clarke scored the overtime game winner in game 2 of the 1974 finals. For his career Schultz racked up 2,294 penalty minutes and still holds the record of 472 penalty minutes in a season.
9. On December 11, 1969 the Flyers decided to forego the traditional playing of the Star Spangled Banner before games and instead played a record by recording star Kate Smith that became the teams good luck charm. What was this song?

Answer: God Bless America

The reason for this change was due in part of the feelings over the Vietnam War. They won that night and started using this song more often especially for important games. Ms. Smith sang live a few times but the most important game she sang live was before game 6 of the 1974 finals with the Flyers needing a win to secure the title. According to Bruin Phil Esposito, once Kate sang that song they knew they had no chance.
10. The first 5 years of their existence the Flyers were mildly to less than successful. They made the playoffs 3 times in those 5 seasons but could never advance. Once they started playing more aggressive thanks to the coaching method of Fred Shero, the Flyers headed into the 1973 playoffs with the Minnesota North Stars with a little more confidence. With the series tied at 2 games a piece, the Flyers won game five 3-2 in overtime and eventually won game 6 4-2 to win their first ever playoff series. Who scored the overtime game winner in game 5?

Answer: Gary Dornhoefer

Even though the Flyers would lose to the eventual champions the Canadiens in the semi-finals, winning this series went a long way to building up their confidence. The next season Parent returned to the team and the Flyers would eventually defeat the Bruins in 6 games to win their first Cup and repeated the following season by defeating the Buffalo Sabers in a finals that featured none of the Original 6 teams for the first time since 1928.
