Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player to steal a base in four different decades?

Answer: Ted Williams

Rickey Henderson did it in 2000, so Williams now has company in this odd accomplishment.
2. Who is the only player to be active both when Babe Ruth hit his last home run, and when Hank Aaron hit his first?

Answer: Phil Cavarretta

Cavarretta was a teenager playing his first full season with the Cubs when Ruth retired in 1935, and he was finishing his career with the White Sox when Aaron started in 1954.
3. Who is the only player to win a Gold Glove for four different teams?

Answer: Bobby Shantz

Shantz won with the Yankees, Pirates, Cardinals, and Phillies.
4. Who are the first two players to hit a home run before the age of 20, and after the age of 40?

Answer: Rusty Staub and Ty Cobb

5. Who is the only player to bat .300 before the age of 20 (with enough at bats to qualify for the batting championship)?

Answer: Mel Ott

Braves shortstop phenom Rafael Furcal had a great rookie year in 2000, but he fell short of Ott's accomplishment on two counts: Furcal turned 20 before the end of the season, and he finished at 'only' .295 after a tremendous start. It should be noted also that although Ty Cobb broke in at age 18, he didn't play a full season until he was 20.
6. Which of these players has the most World Championship rings?

Answer: Frank Crosetti

Crosetti has 16. He earned 6 rings as a Yankee shortstop in the '30's and '40's, and then 10 more as a coach. He appeared in an amazing total of 22 World Series, either as a player or a coach.
7. Who was Giant manager Roger Craig talking about when he said 'This man deserves Comeback Player of the Year for this game alone!'?

Answer: Bob Brenly

Playing out of position at third base on September 14, 1986, Brenly tied a major league record with 4 errors in the fourth inning. He then redeemed himself big-time by hitting a home run in the 5th, a two-run single in the 7th, and a game-winning home run in the 9th!
8. Who played in the most Major League games without ever getting to the World Series?

Answer: Ernie Banks

Banks appeared in 2,528 games but never reached the Series. Bonds ended the 2000 season at 2,143, so he may surpass Banks before he retires. The other two listed also played in over 2,000 games without ever getting to the Series. The Cubs' record of futility continues to this day, as they have not been to the Series since 1945, and have not won it since 1908.
9. Who is the last person to hit 20 triples in a season?

Answer: Christian Guzman

Guzman plays shortstop for the Minnesota Twins, accounting for his relative obscurity compared to his more famous counterparts like Jeter, Rodriguez, Garciaparra, Vizquel, et. al. Add George Brett to the names listed as possible answers and you have all the players in the last 50 years who have hit 20 triples in a season!
10. Which of these players has the most strikeouts (189) in a season in which he hit .300?

Answer: Bobby Bonds

Bobby did this in 1970.
11. Who twice struck out only 4 times in a season, while hitting .300?

Answer: Joe Sewell

The others were also known for their low strikeout totals, but none can match Sewell's record. Playing during 1920-1933 for the Indians and then the Yankees, Sewell struck out only 114 times in 7,132 at bats.
12. Which team has had the most consecutive seasons with 100 or more losses, when they lost 100 games five seasons in a row?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies 'accomplished' this dubious feat by losing 100 five years in a row, from 1938 to 1942. No wonder Phillie's fans are so cranky!
13. Who was known as 'Dr. Strangeglove', and 'The Ancient Mariner' (who 'stoppeth one in three') in recognition of his terrible fielding?

Answer: Dick Stuart

Stuart led his league in errors for a first baseman for seven years in a row (1958-1964).
14. Who was the first Major Leaguer to play in five decades?

Answer: Minnie Minoso

Perhaps an asterisk should be attached to this record, since the 1976 and 1980 appearances were publicity stunts. His actual career lasted 1949-1964. Minoso was a very productive player who some argue should be in the Hall of Fame. They point to his late start (he didn't play regularly until age 28 because of the color barrier), coupled with his good walk totals, good fielding skills, and other pluses in areas not usually given enough attention. 'Total Baseball' rates Minoso as the 117th best player ever, just ahead of Ernie Banks, which seems to support his Hall of Fame credentials.
15. Who played 15 years in the Major Leagues as a position player (i.e., a non-pitcher), but only got into 663 games?

Answer: Moe Berg

Moe Berg is the all-time champion bench-warmer. In 15 years, he only once got into as many as 100 games, this in 1929 with the White Sox. Originally a shortstop when he broke into the majors, he converted to catcher in his third year and hung around as the bullpen catcher for a variety of teams until 1939. Very knowledgeable and fluent in many languages, he was a spy for the U.S. during World War II. (One of the books about him is called 'The Catcher Was A Spy'.) Ralph Houk and Charlie Silvera were also noteworthy bench-warmers as seldom-used backup catchers to Yogi Berra, but they only played for 8 and 10 seasons, respectively.
