Entertainment by Themes Trivia Questions

1. In the 2000 earworm, "Who Let the Dogs Out" by the Baha Men, who let the dogs out?

From Quiz
Questions Leading to More Questions

Answer: Unknown

"Who Let the Dogs Out" was a question that plagued and annoyed the world for most of 2000. However, we are never given an answer as to who let the dogs out. According to the Baha Men, there is no answer as they wanted to keep interest in the song. The band has also stated in numerous interviews that there is no deeper meaning to the song. It's merely meant to be catchy.

2. What type of fighter jet did Starscream transform into during the "Generation 1 (G1)" era of "The Transformers"?

From Quiz Starscream: Ace of the Air

Answer: F-15 Eagle

Starscream was among the earliest action figures to be released by Hasbro for "The Transformers" franchise in 1984. He was one of three original Decepticons who each transformed into a fighter jet, specifically the F-15 Eagle. All three toys were exactly the same in vehicle and robot design, however each one sported a different color scheme. Starscream was painted with a red, blue and grey livery. Thundercracker and Skywarp (the two other original figures) were painted blue/white and black/purple/white respectively. These three action figures (and later ones that featured the same design) would be retroactively be referred to as "Seekers", which was a term for them developed by fans of the series. The classic design for Starscream and his brothers have been revisited and reissued numerous times across the history of "The Transformers" franchise.

3. In the 21st century we hear of many things that can be made by 3D printing: anything from human organs to houses. If I can boldly ask, which television sci-fi show demonstrated the technology in the late 1980s?

From Quiz New Technologies: Life Imitating Art

Answer: Star Trek: The Next Generation

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" aired between 1987 and 1994. This was the third of the fifteen steps you need to follow to become a complete Trekkie. (That path includes the animated series and movies.) In "TNG", as Trekkies like to call it, the USS Enterprise had new captain, Jean-Luc Picard, who was played by Patrick Stewart. In all, 178 episodes were broadcast, but it was cancelled because the special effects were getting too expensive and the franchise owners wanted to concentrate on the move soon-offs. Now Trekkers, and Trekkies, will argue until the cow jumps over the moon about who was the best captain. Jean-Luc Picard gets the nod in several "best captain" lists. What is the difference between a Trekker and a Trekkie did I hear you ask? No?, well I'll quote one of my favourite definitions anyway: "A Trekkie is the fan that has lost touch with reality. A Trekker enjoys being a fan, but still has both feet on the ground here in the real world."

4. MOVIES: which self-styled 'rom zom com', released in 2004 and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, is an affectionate spoof of zombie movies?

From Quiz Zombies

Answer: Shaun of the Dead

'Shaun of the Dead' is part of the 'Cornetto Trilogy', a series of films made by Pegg and co-writer Edgar Wright that also includes 'Hot Fuzz', a buddy cop movie set in a sleepy village, and 'The World's End', which features an alien invasion. 'Shaun of the Dead' is a homage to George A. Romero's 'Dead' films and stars Pegg as Shaun, an electronics salesman from London, and Frost as his mate Ed. A zombie apocalypse breaks out in London and Shaun and Ed find themselves battling zombies, before being forced to hide in a pub. From Quiz One

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Randle McMurphy is a prisoner in an ordinary jail who is moved to an institution for mentally ill people. Once there he becomes the leader of some patients and has a number of clashes with Head Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher, who runs the ward he is in. The movie was very successful financially and critically and was nominated for nine Academy Awards. It won five of them, becoming only the second movie after the1934 'It Happened One Night' to win what is known as the 'big five' Awards. As well as Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher winning the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards, Milos Forman won the Best Director category while the movie's producers, Michael Douglas and Saul Zaentz, won the Best Picture Award and Bo Goldman and Lawrence Hauben won the Best Screenplay Adapted from Other Material category. As the last Award suggests, the movie 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' was based on a 1962 book by Ken Kesey with the same title. The book is narrated by another ward inmate, Chief Bromden, and the title is from the last line of a nursery rhyme he learned from his grandmother. At the start of the book Ken Kesey explains that some episodes in it are inspired by things he witnessed while working in a mental health facility. The book was first adapted into a 1963 play of the same name by Dale Wasserman before being adapted again for the 1975 movie.

From Quiz Unicron: The Chaos Bringer

Answer: Orson Welles

Unicron was one of the main antagonists in "The Transformers: The Movie", an animated film set in the same continuity as the original "Transformers" (Generation 1) animated series (1984-1987). In most Transformers media, Unicron is depicted as a giant Transformer who becomes a large monstrous planet, complete with a ring, a mouth and two long horns. He would sustain himself by consuming other planets and their inhabitants. In this film, Unicron was voiced by Orson Welles, who gained notoriety for narrating H.G. Wells' novel "The War of The Worlds" over the radio in 1938. He is also known for the classic movie "Citizen Kane" in 1941. Orson Welles was in poor health when he was hired to play Unicron. He died on October 10, 1985, at 70 years old, just days after recording his lines.

8. "'Cause we all have wings - But some of us don't know why". These profound words came from a ballad by one of Australia's most successful pop/rock bands. Which band kicked out these lyrics in 1988?

From Quiz It's Never Too Late -- Words that Inspire Action

Answer: INXS

Lead singer Michael Hutchence was responsible for those poignant words that appeared in the song "Never Tear Us Apart" on INXS's monster album "Kick". The song, with melody written by Andrew Farriss, was released as a single and did better in the US (reaching #7 on the Billboard charts) than it did in Australia where it only hit #14 on its initial release. The song was re-released when a mini-series titled "INXS: Never Tear Us Apart" was aired in 2014, and it did better on the charts the second time, reaching #11. While the song referred to a relationship between two people, the line "'Cause we all have wings - But some of us don't know why" has a much wider meaning. We have the power to change who we are - to grow, to be a better version of ourselves.

The very successful game was developed by game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka and is mainly published by Nintendo. Not only was a television series based on the game made in the USA in 1989 but since 1997 manga adaptations have been released in Japan.

10. Commonly found as a treasure chest, a Mimic is a neutral aberration first introduced in what tabletop role-playing game?

From Quiz Living Well is the Best Revenge

Mimics can be virtually any inanimate object though the common trope is for them to appear as wooden or stone objects (treasure chests are typical). Mimics returned in every subsequent edition of the game taking on different variant forms (think bigger-- Space Mimics can be found between planets!) and having analogs in other tabletop RPG systems.

12. The inclusion of Monster energy drinks was considered an 'act of vandalism' by Polygon in which 2019 post-apocalyptic video game release by Kojima Productions?

From Quiz I'm Not Buying It

Answer: Death Stranding

"Death Stranding" was Hideo Kojima and Kojima Productions' inaugural game independent from Konami, whom Kojima had split from in 2015. It was a polarising open world action game themed around the reconnection of disperse colonies via a wireless network. In the game, the Monster energy drinks could be used to replenish stamina which was used in tasks such as running, climbing and holding breath whilst underwater. A "Death Stranding" opinion piece by Polygon slammed the use of the Monster drinks in the game, calling them "outrageously inappropriate, almost to the point of parody". In such a post-apocalyptic setting, Monster energy drinks struck discordant tones: they were bright, cheap and plentiful in a world of muted colours and scarcity.

13. "Children of the Night" was a 1931 short story by Robert E. Howard belonging to what fictional universe originating in the writings of H.P. Lovecraft?

From Quiz Children of the Night

Answer: The Cthulhu Mythos

Discworld comes from the writings of Terry Pratchett, Amtor from Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Boxen from C.S. Lewis. The short story was originally published in the April/May 1931 issue of "Weird Tales," a pulp fantasy magazine that printed early work by H.P. Lovecraft, who published "The Call of Cthulhu" in its pages. Robert E. Howard also published several of his Conan the Barbarian stories in the magazine. "Weird Tales" is considered one of the most influential of all fantasy magazines and was still in publication as of 2019, though it was briefly renamed in the mid-1990s before returning to its original name in 1998.

14. Which Italian horror movie, about the filming of a documentary on cannibalism in the Amazon jungle, was banned in several countries due to gratuitous violence and animal abuse?

From Quiz Meat the Family

Answer: Cannibal Holocaust

'Cannibal Holocaust' got director Ruggero Deodato into quite a lot of hot water, because of its extremely graphic violence. It's about a (fictional) team of American journalists who go missing while filming a documentary in the Amazon, and a team of rescuers, led by Professor Harold Monroe (Robert Kerman), who go to find them. They trade a tape recorder for the film footage, which reveals that the crew raped a Yanomami girl, and were killed by members of the tribe in revenge. In 'Cannibal Holocaust', both the Yanomami and a rival tribe, the Shamatari, are depicted as cannibals (some truth in television, as the Yanomami actually do practice ritual endocannibalism in real life, and make the ashes of their dead into soup). Although no humans actually died during the making of the film, live animals were killed; two monkeys, a pig, a turtle, a boa constrictor, a tarantula and a coati, to be precise. Some of the American actors were reportedly very upset about this, though the indigenous cast members weren't as bothered and ate the brains of the two dead monkeys.

16. Harry Potter is able to understand and converse in Parseltongue (which makes him a Parselmouth). With whom is he able to communicate as a result?

From Quiz Languages that Never Really Were

Answer: snakes and other serpentlike creatures

Parseltongue is spoken by snakes and other creatures which are like snakes, e.g. the Runespoor and the Basilisk. It is an inherited skill possessed almost exclusively by Dark Wizards. Harry Potter acquired the skill unknowingly when Lord Voldemort attacked him as a child and made him into a Pseudo-Horcrux. To one who cannot understand it, Parseltongue sounds like hissing. Paracelsus the alchemist "discovered" Parseltongue in the Sixteenth Century although it existed long before then.

17. Which British band invited us to 'Come Dancing' in 1982?

From Quiz You Make Me Feel Like Dancing

Answer: The Kinks

The song did rather better in the USA charts than in the UK, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and only number twelve on the UK Singles Chart. The song told the story of the local dance hall, or palais, now demolished for parking space, with the singer reminiscing about his sister's many dates there. It was something of a comeback for The Kinks, whose previous hits had included 'You Really Got Me' from 1964 and 'Waterloo Sunset' in 1967.

18. "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!" was a famous quote from the 1995 movie "Braveheart". Which character made the statement in the film?

From Quiz Freedom

Answer: William Wallace

Mel Gibson directed and starred as Scottish warrior William Wallace in the epic film. Wallace had been one of the leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. He helped defeat the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 but was later captured and put to death in 1305. In "Braveheart", the bridge was missing in the "Battle of Stirling", along with several other historical inaccuracies, but the film was popular and picked up ten Academy Award nominations, winning half of them including Best Picture and Best Director. There is no evidence that Wallace actually made the "freedom" quote, but it was inspirational in the film!

24. "The Colour of Magic" was the first book in which series by Terry Pratchett?

From Quiz Magic is Where You Find It

Answer: Discworld

The 1983 release of "The Colour of Magic" was both the first "Discworld" novel and the first "Rincewind" story in the series. Rincewind was an ineffectual wizard who, for some reason, had gained the interest of one of the gods, known as The Lady. She protected him and his traveling companion, a tourist named Twoflower, on their journey across the disc on which they lived. The "Discworld" series consists of several different groups of stories focusing on various characters who live on a disc on the back of four elephants standing on a turtle that is sailing through space. Magic is definitely a part of life on the disc with the wizards and witches that appear in the stories.

25. "Xanadu" is a title of a movie from 1980, as well as the title song of this movie. It was named after the summer residence of Kublai Khan. Which poet immortalised this name in a poem first published in 1816? He also wrote about an albatross.

From Quiz Xanadu and Other Entertainment Starting with X

Answer: Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Coleridge (1772-1834) is perhaps best known for his work "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", a sailor wearing an albatross around his neck. Every poetry lover will have heard the lines "water, water, everywhere, nor a drop to drink" and "a sadder and a wiser man". In 1797 Coleridge completed the poem "Kubla Khan", published only 19 years later. The first lines describe Kublai Khan's summer residence: "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan // A stately pleasure-dome decree // Where Alph, the sacred river, ran // through caverns measureless to man // down to a sunless sea." Coleridge then follows with a description of how such a lovely place was built in a desolate area. In the movie, Kira (played by Olivia Newton-John) persuades Sonny Malone (role by Michael Beck) to build a huge roller skating rink with a podium for a music band. They name the club "Xanadu", inspired by Coleridge's poem (which they quote in the movie, by the way). Keats (1795-1821) is famous for his poems "Endymion" and "Hyperion", and for his "Ode on a Grecian Urn". Lord Byron (1788-1824) has left us the masterpiece "Don Juan". Shelley (1792-1822) wrote "Ozymandias" and "Ode to a West Wind", and some other works.

27. The fish called Blinky posed quite a problem for Mr. Burns in "The Simpsons" TV show. What was unusual about Blinky?

From Quiz I See Sea Creatures

Answer: It had three eyes

A passing reporter was taken aback by this creature and hastily ran the story, much to the dismay of the power plant's owner, Mr. Burns. This mutant fish came back to haunt Mr. Burns during his campaign to become Springfield's governor. To prove that Blinky was not a product of the toxic waste from his plant, Burns decided to eat the fish live on TV, but his failure to keep it down led to him losing the campaign.

28. Originally released in 1933 (starring Fay Wray), what film was remade in 2005 by Peter Jackson and starred Andy Serkis as the main character?

From Quiz Why Not Just Do It Again?

Answer: King Kong

"King Kong" was a hit when it was released in black-and-white in 1933. Directed by Ernest B. Schoedsack, it ended up inspiring several other 'large animals in the city' movies in its wake. Perhaps no one can argue that the scene featuring Fay Wray as bait is anything short of memorable. Unsurprisingly, a movie with that much buzz was bound to be remade. It was, once in 1976 with Jessica Lange in Fay Wray's role and again in 2005 with Naomi Watts as Ann Darrow. All three brought Kong to the top of the Empire State Building and all of them ended with the tragic death of the colossal ape. The 1976 version was directed by John Guillermin (who also made "The Towering Inferno") and the 2005 version was done by Peter Jackson after the completion of "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. In this third version, King Kong was played by Andy Serkis (who also played Gollum) and was filmed using a motion-capture suit.

29. The "Arabian Nights" tales are framed as a series of stories (and stories within stories!) told by the clever Scheherazade. For what reason was she supposed to have told them?

From Quiz Scheherazade and the Sultan

On her wedding night, she began telling a tale so engaging that he couldn't bear to kill her without hearing the ending. On the second night, she left off at another cliffhanger, and so on, and so on, until the Sultan finally decided not to kill her after all.

30. Many movies have had to do with death and funerals. Which movie starring Hugh Grant supposedly had more to do with nuptials than eulogies?

From Quiz Are Funerals Fun?

Answer: Four Weddings and a Funeral

Grant and Andie McDowell starred in the 1994 comedy, "Four Weddings and a Funeral". Their characters meet at a wedding, fall in love, and the other important events of the film take place for the most part at the other three weddings and the funeral referenced in the movie's title. The story ends well, with Hugh and Andie's characters vowing eternal love as well as never to get married. The other three titles mentioned are all examples of Hugh Grant's work. "Comic Relief: Dr. Who - The Curse of Fatal Death" is a 1999 made for TV movie parodying the "Dr. Who" series in which Hugh Grant is one of four actors who plays the Doctor. "Nine Months" is a 1995 movie comedy starring Grant and Julianne Moore in which the couple has to adjust to an unplanned pregnancy. "Notting Hill" is a 1999 romantic comedy in which Hugh falls in love with a famous actress, played by Julia Roberts.
