I and Me in Song Titles Trivia Questions

1. Tubeway Army released the album "Replicas" in 1979. What did singer Gary Numan claim on the album? "I Nearly Married _____"?

From Quiz
You Did What?

Answer: A Human

The influence of the seminal Tubeway Army album "Replicas" is phenomenal, far-reaching, and sadly overlooked. The sci-fi imagery and apparent celebration of what would be dystopia in literary terms can only really be compared to Kraftwerk in terms of depth, but it influenced everything from dance music to heavy metal. Numan's brilliance has always been sitting comfortably between dour avant-garde industrial bands and flimsy pop music. The album is the last as Tubeway Army since Gary became the focal point and carried on as a solo artist with practically the same band a la Alice Cooper. It was the first to use drum machine too, although later albums did feature a human drummer, albeit a different one to Tubeway Army. The track "I Nearly Married a Human", which is an instrumental, closes the album. Gary did actually marry a human, although he had a fling with "Cars" in 1979. "So I Married an Axe Murderer" is the name of a 1993 comedy film. Question supplied by thula2.

2. Boy George and his band Culture Club released this hit single straight from their Platinum-plus debut album "Kissing To Be Clever". What is the missing word from the title "I'll _______ 4 Ya"?

From Quiz You'll Do What? Volume Two

Answer: Tumble

"I'll Tumble For You" wasn't released outside of North America, although fans back home in Blighty (England) knew the song from the album ("Kissing To Be Clever"), and it became a long-standing live favourite. Culture Club formed in England in 1981 when Boy George left Malcolm McLaren-fabricated New Wave band Bow Wow Wow and hooked up with Mikey Craig (bass), Jon Moss (drums), and Roy Hay (guitar). Culture Club went on to outshine Bow Wow Wow commercially although Bow Wow Wow's musical influence can be heard in bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Question supplied by Linda122.

3. In the song "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" by 10cc, which airline is mentioned?

From Quiz You Are What?

Answer: It is never mentioned

"I'm Mandy, Fly Me" gave 10cc a number six hit on the UK singles chart in 1976. It peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. 10cc were Lol Creme (guitar and keyboards), Kevin Godley (vocals and drums), Graham Gouldman (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and Eric Stewart (vocals, guitar and keyboards). They were one of the best and most innovative British groups of the '70s. 10cc had eleven Top Ten hits on the UK singles chart between 1972 and 1978. This included the three number one hits, "Rubber Bullets", "I'm Not In Love" and "Dreadlock Holiday", the last of which was their last UK Top Ten hit. Growing differences between Godley/Creme and Stewart/Gouldman became more apparent during the recording of the album "How Dare You" in 1976. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the group and 10cc became a three piece band with the addition of their tour back-up drummer Paul Burgess. Other musicians joined the band later. 4. "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" was this legendary singer's last single to be released while he was alive. By the time it hit the number one spot on the Billboard Country Singles chart in 1953, he was dead. Who was that singer?

From Quiz You'll Do What?

Answer: Hank Williams

The dark gallows humour of "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" took a somewhat morbid turn when Hank died on 1st January 1953 aged just 29 years old. He'd led a reckless life that included drug and alcohol abuse which undoubtedly played a part in his death. This is one of his more blatantly jokey songs, but even so his lonesome voice telling us about all his bad luck never fails to send shivers down my spine, just like on everything he ever recorded. The song was written by Fred Rose, who also wrote "Take These Chains from My Heart" and "Kaw-Liga" for Hank. In a cruel twist of fate, Rose passed away in 1954, adding to claims that the song "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" is cursed. About the red herrings: Ray Charles did Hank's "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "Take These Chains From My Heart". Ray Charles died in 2004. John Lee Hooker released an album called "Never Get Out of These Blues Alive" in 1972. He died in 2001. Johnny Cash frequently covered Hank's songs and he even made a whole album of them with Jerry Lee Lewis in 1971. Submitted by thula2

5. Trisha Yearwood, sang a single called "That's What I Like About You" that debuted on her first song album along with "She's in Love With the Boy". What was the title of her album?

From Quiz What I Like About...

Answer: Trisha Yearwood

The single, "That's What I Like About You" peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks, and it was number four on Canada's RPM Country Trades. The 1991 album on MCA records was titled "Trisha Yearwood".

6. The Wurzels, from England's West Country, reached number three in the UK in 1976 singing about being drinkers of which alcoholic beverage?

From Quiz I Am the Walrus

Answer: Cider

The Wurzels come from Somerset and their songs are based on their rustic origins (much exaggerated), and are often based on the tunes of other songs with words rewritten to suit. 'I Am a Cider Drinker' was sung to the tune of 'Una Paloma Blanca' and a previous (number one) UK hit was 'I've Got a Brand New Combine Harvester', a parody of Melanie's 'Brand New Key'. Their original singer was Adge Cutler, who died in 1974 following a car accident on his way home from performing in a concert.

7. "I Melt With You" was a 1982 hit for which British new wave band?

From Quiz You Do What?

Answer: Modern English

MTV and the movie "Valley Girl" helped this song gain popularity. A snippet of a remade version of it was even used in a jingle in a TV advertisement for Hershey chocolate, which gives it an entirely different meaning! The band were formed in Colchester, Essex, England, in 1979 by Robbie Grey (vocals), Gary McDowell (guitar, vocals) and Michael Conroy (bass, vocals). Originally known as The Lepers they became Modern English and expanded when Richard Brown (drums) and Stephen Walker (keyboards) joined. Although Modern English are British they have only had hits on the UK Indie chart. They have had a couple of minor hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Submitted by rebelyank

8. Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" served as an anthem for the women's liberation movement. It also topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1972, and was the first song of which kind to do so?

From Quiz You Are What? Volume Two

Answer: First number one sung by an Australian

Australian singer Helen Reddy co-wrote "I Am Woman" with Ray Burton. The song was recorded in 1970, although it wasn't released until two years later. Helen won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for it in 1973. Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender" was the first number one single to replace a single by the same artist when it knocked "Hound Dog" off the top spot. The Italian singer Domenico Modugno's "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)" was the first non-English language number one, and "The Happy Organ" by Dave "Baby" Cortez was the first instrumental single. (All based on Billboard Hot 100) Question submitted by rebelyank

9. In the song "I Did What I Did For _____" by Tony Christie, who was it that he did what he did for?

From Quiz You Did What?

Answer: Maria

"I Did What I Did For Maria" was a number two hit on the UK singles chart for Tony Christie in 1971. It did not chart in the US. "I Did What I Did For Maria" was written and produced by Mitch Murray and Peter Callander. Singer/songwriter/musician/actor Tony Christie was born Anthony Fitzgerald in Conisbrough, West Riding of Yorkshire, England in 1943. His first UK chart entry was "Las Vegas" which peaked at number 21 on the UK singles chart. He had two UK Top 20 hits in the '70s and one in the '90s when he was featured as vocalist with The All Seeing I on "Walk Like A Panther '98". He has sold over 10,000,000 albums world wide and is especially popular in Germany. Between 1991 and 2002 he recorded nine albums specifically for the German market. In 2011 Tony Christie released a charity single with The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, Collingwood. It was a special arrangement of "Steal The Sun" in aid of the "Help for Heroes Charity", supporting all of the British Forces fighting on the frontline in Afghanistan. 10. "I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero Now" is on the 2006 album "Ringleader of the Tormentors". Which artist released this album?

From Quiz You'll Do What? Volume Two

Answer: Morrissey

Your guess is as good as mine as to what Morrissey was getting at on this one, but it works and it's a great track. Something about it reminds me of Edgar Allan Poe. Here's a snippet: "They who should love me Walk right through me I am a ghost And as far as I know I haven't even died And my love is under the ground My one true love is under the ground And I'll never be, I'll never be, I'll never be anybody's hero now" "Ringleader of the Tormentors" is Morrissey's eighth solo album since leaving the ground-breaking band The Smiths, and one of my favourites. The first single release off the album was "You Have Killed Me", which included a tip of the hat to controversial Italian film director Pasolini in the lyrics. Iconic Italian composer Ennio Morricone did the string arrangement on the track "Dear God Please Help Me", and three tracks feature a choir made up of Italian kids. All this Italophilia is possibly due to the album being recorded in Rome, or maybe it's the other way around. It has been suggested that the "I'll Never Be Anybody's Hero Now"'s lyrics are actually about Rome and the ruins that are scattered about The Eternal City. I chucked David Bowie in as an option since the album's producer Tony Visconti (blatant Italo-American roots) worked extensively with Bowie. Question supplied by thula2

11. Nelly Furtado sang this catchy song which reached number one in Canada, but only got to number five in the UK charts. What animal is missing from the title? 'I'm Like A ...'

From Quiz You Are What?

Answer: Bird

Canadian singer Furtado sang this song about warning a guy that she likes her freedom and may not be able to commit fully to a relationship, meaning she's like a bird and can fly away anytime. Question supplied by Linda122.

12. "I'll Keep You Satisfied" was a hit for UK group Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas in the '60s. Who wrote it?

From Quiz You'll Do What?

Answer: Lennon/McCartney

"I'll Keep You Satisfied" was a number four hit for Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas on the UK singles chart in 1963. It peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. Although the song is credited to Lennon/McCartney, it was mostly written by Paul McCartney. It was recorded at the Abbey Road studios in London in October 1963. It was produced by George Martin and released on the Parlophone record label in the UK and the Imperial record label in the US. John Lennon was present at the recording. Billy J Kramer was born William Howard Ashton in Bootle, Liverpool, (now in Merseyside) Lancashire, UK, in 1943. He chose the stage name Kramer from a phone book and John Lennon suggested the J to make the name sound tougher. After Kramer signed a management deal with Brian Epstein, Manchester group The Dakotas were signed up as his backing group although they insisted on a separate recording contract. The Dakotas were Ray Jones (bassist), Robin MacDonald (rhythm guitar), Tony Mansfield (drums) and Michael Maxfield (lead guitar). They had one instrumental hit when "The Cruel Sea" reached number 18 on the UK singles chart in 1963. It did not chart in the US. Submitted by shipyardbernie

13. A Michael Jackson tune called, "(I Like) The Way You Love Me" was included on the "Michael" music album. What type of music genre was the song?

From Quiz What I Like About...

Answer: Pop music

The 2010 ballad "(I Like) The Way You Love Me" was a part of Michael Jackson's 2004 ultimate collection and it was a song on the "Michael" music album.

14. "I and I Survive" is a track on the ground-breaking album "Rock For Light" (1983) by which punk/reggae band from Washington, D.C?

From Quiz You Do What?

Answer: Bad Brains

Bad Brains didn't start out as a hardcore punk band, and it might be argued that they are much more than that label leads one to believe, but the band's influence on the genre is undeniable. The album "Rock For Light" is quintessential high-octane, tight as a nut, blistering punk rock. Much of the material on the album had already been heard by those really in the know on Bad Brains' cassette-only release ("Bad Brains") on the seminal underground label ROIR, but for the masses the album was a revelation. Bad Brains returned to the Rastafarian linguistic concept of "I and I" rather than "we" when they titled their 1986 album "I Against I". The album was a further ground-breaker with its infective blend of hardcore punk, heavy metal, reggae and even a touch of funk. About the red herrings: none of them formed in Washington D.C, or even the USA. They did however all form in 1977, as did Bad Brains. Question supplied by thula2.

15. "I'm A _______" is a title used by Bo Diddley, The Spencer Davis Group, and Pulp. What word fills the gap?

From Quiz You Are What? Volume Two

Answer: Man

The Spencer Davis Group's "I'm A Man" was a hit both sides of the pond in 1967 and it hasn't aged a bit. Its organ-led driving energy is just about the grooviest thing to have ever come out of Birmingham, and 19-year-old Steve Winwood's world-wise vocals never fail to astound me. In true rhythm and blues fashion, Bo Didley's 1955 hit "I'm A Man" was something of a continuation of Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man", and following Bo's success Muddy took the baton and ran with one of his signature songs "Mannish Boy". All three have been covered countless times, mostly rather pointlessly since both Bo and Muddy were insurmountable. Pulp's "I'm A Man" can be found on their sixth album, 1998's "This Is Hardcore". Jarvis Cocker's witty parody of pitiable male posturing is sharp as a knife. About the red herrings: "I'm A Pig" is by American punk band Angry Samoans, "I'm A Rebel" is the title track on German metal band Accept's second album, and "I'm A Rocker" has been used by numerous artists such as Chuck Berry, Slade, Jerry Lee Lewis, Judas Priest, and Chas and Dave. Question supplied by thula2.

16. Singer Damita Jo had a US hit with an answer song to a number one hit by The Drifters. What is the title of that answer song?

From Quiz You'll Do What? Volume Two

Answer: I'll Save The Last Dance For You

"I'll Save The Last Dance For You" peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 for Damita Jo in 1960. It did not chart in the UK. "Save The Last Dance For Me" was number one for three weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Drifters in 1960. It peaked at number two on the UK singles chart the same year. Question submitted by shipyardbernie

17. On his 1973 album "Ringo", Ringo Starr sang a song written for him by John Lennon. What is the title of this song?

From Quiz You Are What?

Answer: I'm The Greatest

Ringo asked John Lennon for a song to include on his album "Ringo". John played piano, George Harrison played lead guitar, and Billy Preston, who was the only artist ever given a credit on a Beatles record ("Get Back"), played organ. Klaus Voormann, who designed the cover of The Beatles album "Revolver", played bass guitar. John Lennon was going to record "I'm The Greatest" himself for his "Imagine" album but gave it to Ringo instead. Of the alternative choices for this question: "I'm In Love" was recorded by both Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin, "I'm Jealous" was recorded by Ike And Tina Turner, and "I'm Leavin'" was recorded by Elvis Presley. Question submitted by kennell.

18. "I'll Be There" was the last UK Top 20 hit for Gerry & The Pacemakers. Which American singer/songwriter, who was once married to actress Sandra Dee, wrote the song?

From Quiz You'll Do What?

Answer: Bobby Darin

"I'll Be There" was a number 15 hit for Gerry and The Pacemakers on the UK singles chart in 1965. It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year. The song was written by Bobby Darin. He released it as the B-Side of "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 34 on the UK singles chart in 1960. "I'll Be There" peaked at number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 but failed to chart in the UK. Gerry and The Pacemakers were Les Chadwick (bass guitar), Les Maguire (piano), Freddie Marsden (drums) and Gerry Marsden (vocals, guitar). They had six Top Ten hits on the UK chart between 1963 & 1964 which included three number one hits. They were the first artists to have their first three releases peak at number one on the UK chart. They were the first artists to be replaced and in turn to replace The Beatles at number one on the UK chart. Submitted by shipyardbernie

19. What lead singer is featured on Montgomery Gentry's country song about people titled, "I Like Those People"?

From Quiz What I Like About...

Answer: Randy Owen

The legendary Randy Owen of the group Alabama is the featured lead country music singer on the "Rebels on the Run" album recording. Charles Daniels is also featured.

20. The Isley Brothers released the single "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" in 1969, but which teenager had already had a big hit with the song in 1961?

From Quiz You Do What?

Answer: Eddie Hodges

The singer of this song told his girlfriend that he was going to "knock on your door, ring on your bell and tap on your window too", if she did not "come out tonight when the moon is bright". However, we never find out if she did go out. Maybe it was unrequited love. Eddie Hodges was born in 1947 in Mississippi, US. As an actor he appeared on stage in "The Music Man". His first film was "A Hole in the Head" with Frank Sinatra. He went on to make several other films and guest-starred in numerous TV shows. He was only 14 years old when he recorded "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door", which reached the top 20 in the U.S.A. He was drafted into the US Army during the 1960s. Upon discharge and disillusioned with Hollywood, he went back to his native Mississippi where he attended the University of Southern Mississippi. He later became a mental health counselor. Question submitted by wenray.

21. "I'm Walking Behind You" was a US and UK number one hit for Princess Leia Organa's dad. Who was he?

From Quiz You Are What? Volume Two

Answer: Eddie Fisher

"I'm Walking Behind You" was a number one hit on the US and UK singles chart in 1953 for Eddie Fisher. It was his only record to top both charts. "I'm Walking Behind You" was written by Billy Reid. The song is about a man walking down the aisle as his prospective bride marries someone else, (he would be classed as a stalker these days). He didn't do too badly in real life as he married actress Debbie Reynolds, then actress Elizabeth Taylor, then actress Connie Stevens, then ex-Miss Louisiana, Terry Richard and finally businesswoman Betty Lin. He was born Edwin John Tisch in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in 1928. He died in Berkeley, California, USA, due to complications from hip surgery aged 82. Question submitted by shipyardbernie

22. The Blue Belles had a US hit with "I Sold My _____ To The Junkman". What was it that they sold to him?

From Quiz You Did What?

Answer: Heart

"I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" was a number 15 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Blue Belles in 1962. It did not chart in the UK. "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman" was credited to Jimmie Thomas who was really Leon René and first recorded in 1946 by The Basin Street Boys. The actual group that sang on the 1962 version was The Starlets. The president of Newton Records Harold Robinson had the record released by The Blue Belles who used to be known as The Ordettes who later changed their name to Patti LaBelle and Her Blue Belles. If all this is not enough The Blue Belles also recorded a version of their own before promoting it on various TV shows. Harold Robinson was then sued by the manager of The Starlets for ownership of the song and won each member of The Starlets $5,000. It it not known for sure if in fact The Starlets' (who disbanded in 1963) vocal track was replaced by session singers on the 1962 release. Question submitted by shipyardbernie

23. Irish band U2 had a hit with "I Will Follow" in 1980. It is off the band's debut album. What's that album called?

From Quiz You'll Do What? Volume Two

Answer: Boy

U2 fans all over the world are very thankful that drummer Larry Mullen, Jr. posted a notice on Mount Temple Comprehensive School's bulletin board about forming a band way back in 1976, and that Bono (Paul Hewson), Edge (Dave Evans), and Adam Clayton answered. Roughly ten years later the four-piece Dublin band was already amongst the biggest names in music. Question submitted by rebelyank

24. "I'll Cry Instead" came from which Beatles album that was released in 1964?

From Quiz You'll Do What?

Answer: A Hard Day's Night

While "I'll Cry Instead" wasn't used in the original film, it was later added when "A Hard Day's Night" was released for home use (video/DVD). It actually was used for a prologue if you will - the music behind a showing of still photographs before the movie starts. Submitted by rebelyank.

25. What was K.C. and the Sunshine Band's second number one Billboard Hot 100 singles hit song titled?

From Quiz What I Like About...

Answer: That's the Way I Like It

The 1975 hit single was called, "That's the Way I Like It". The tune was written by band members H. W. Casey (KC) and Richard Finch. This tune was on the Billboard Hot 100 chart as a number one hit and it was also number one on the Soul singles chart that year.

26. Which teen idol and television star declared 'I'm a Clown' in 1973?

From Quiz I Am the Walrus

Answer: David Cassidy

The song was a number three hit for David in 1973 on the UK Singles Chart, listed as a joint 'A' side with 'Some Kind of Summer'. Neither of them rings any bells with me, but Cassidy enjoyed great success in the early 1970s linked to his appearances in the television series 'The Partridge Family', who also had hits under that name with David being lead singer. The other singers were also active around that time, with Davy Jones being one of The Monkees.

27. Del Shannon failed to interest The Searchers in his song "I Go To Pieces", so who did have a hit with it in 1965?

From Quiz You Do What?

Answer: Peter and Gordon

"I Go To Pieces" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 for Peter and Gordon in 1965. It did not chart in the UK "I Go To Pieces" was written by Del Shannon for singer Lloyd Brown who could not get it released. Del Shannon also made a less than satisfactory attempt to record the song himself. While on tour in Australia in 1964 with The Searchers and Peter and Gordon, he played it to The Searchers but they were not interested in recording it. Peter and Gordon heard Del Shannon singing the song to The Searchers from their dressing room and asked if they could record the song. "I Go To Pieces" was released in the UK but did not chart. Peter and Gordon's previous single, "I Don't Want To See You Again", had not charted in the UK even though it was the third single in a row written for them by Paul McCartney (although all three were credited to Lennon/McCartney.) Question submitted by shipyardbernie

28. In their 1988 hit single, how many miles did The Proclaimers claim they were going to be? "I'm Gonna Be (______) Miles"

From Quiz You Are What? Volume Two

Answer: 500

"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is one of those songs that either have you stomping around like it's Hogmanay, or lunging for the skip button on your listening device. I fall into the first group and almost wish I'd been born north of the border when I hear this, or any songs by The Proclaimers actually. "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" can be found on the band's second album "Sunshine on Leith", the title track of which has been adopted by Hibs (Hibernian F.C.), whilst "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" has been adopted by the Scotland national football team to rouse the crowd, and it does a sterling job. I don't think any of the red herrings have ever been recorded, although Mike Oldfield did release an album called "Five Miles Out" in 1982. Question supplied by thula2.

29. A Tribe Called Quest's debut single from their debut album told the tale of a mishap on a road trip. What was the title of that song?

From Quiz You Did What?

Answer: I Left My Wallet In El Segundo

"I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" was off the album "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm" which came out in 1990. The band didn't really hit the mainstream until the follow-up album "The Low End Theory" a year later. The song "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo" has become a classic, partly thanks to its comedy video in which rapper Q-Tip is distracted by a pretty face at a diner in El Segundo and forgets to pick up his wallet. He doesn't realize it's missing until he and the lads are all back in New York. "I Left My Love In Avalon" is a line from "Avalon" by Al Jolson, "I Left A Woman Waiting" is on Leonard Cohen's album "Death of a Ladies' Man", and "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" has been sung by many artists; the best-known version is by Tony Bennett. Question by Waitakere.

30. In 1965 "I'll Keep Holding On" was a hit for a girl group from Michigan, USA. What's the name of the group?

From Quiz You'll Do What? Volume Two

Answer: The Marvelettes

"I'll Keep Holding On" was the first hit (number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100) to have Wanda Young singing lead after she had been favoured over long-time lead vocalist Gladys Horton by the Motown poohbahs. However, Young had already sung lead on album tracks and co-led with Horton on other single releases. Wanda Young (aka Wanda Rodgers after she married Bobby Rogers from The Miracles in 1963) effectively usurped Horton (who left in 1967) and continued to be the lead vocalist of choice until the demise of The Marvelettes in 1970. In fact, the 1970 album "The Return of The Marvelettes" was in reality just Young and Motown's perennial backing singers The Andantes since the only founding member still involved by then, Katherine Anderson, refused to have anything to do with soiling the band's name. The other significant founding member (other than the aforementioned Horton, and folk from very early incarnations of the act) -, Georgeanna Tillman, had left the group in 1965 due to health problems. About the red herrings: The Action released a cover of "I'll Keep Holding On" in 1966, The Lurkers' "I'll Be There With You" is on their second album "God's Lonely Men" (1979), and Twisted Sister released a very early single called "I'll Never Grow Up, Now!" in 1979.
