Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" was this legendary singer's last single to be released while he was alive. By the time it hit the number one spot on the Billboard Country Singles chart in 1953, he was dead. Who was that singer?

Answer: Hank Williams

The dark gallows humour of "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" took a somewhat morbid turn when Hank died on 1st January 1953 aged just 29 years old. He'd led a reckless life that included drug and alcohol abuse which undoubtedly played a part in his death. This is one of his more blatantly jokey songs, but even so his lonesome voice telling us about all his bad luck never fails to send shivers down my spine, just like on everything he ever recorded.

The song was written by Fred Rose, who also wrote "Take These Chains from My Heart" and "Kaw-Liga" for Hank. In a cruel twist of fate, Rose passed away in 1954, adding to claims that the song "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive" is cursed.

About the red herrings: Ray Charles did Hank's "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "Take These Chains From My Heart". Ray Charles died in 2004. John Lee Hooker released an album called "Never Get Out of These Blues Alive" in 1972. He died in 2001. Johnny Cash frequently covered Hank's songs and he even made a whole album of them with Jerry Lee Lewis in 1971.

2. "I'll Keep You Satisfied" was a hit for UK group Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas in the '60s. Who wrote it?

Answer: Lennon/McCartney

"I'll Keep You Satisfied" was a number four hit for Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas on the UK singles chart in 1963. It peaked at number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.

Although the song is credited to Lennon/McCartney, it was mostly written by Paul McCartney. It was recorded at the Abbey Road studios in London in October 1963. It was produced by George Martin and released on the Parlophone record label in the UK and the Imperial record label in the US. John Lennon was present at the recording.

Billy J Kramer was born William Howard Ashton in Bootle, Liverpool, (now in Merseyside) Lancashire, UK, in 1943. He chose the stage name Kramer from a phone book and John Lennon suggested the J to make the name sound tougher. After Kramer signed a management deal with Brian Epstein, Manchester group The Dakotas were signed up as his backing group although they insisted on a separate recording contract.

The Dakotas were Ray Jones (bassist), Robin MacDonald (rhythm guitar), Tony Mansfield (drums) and Michael Maxfield (lead guitar). They had one instrumental hit when "The Cruel Sea" reached number 18 on the UK singles chart in 1963. It did not chart in the US.

3. "I'll Be There" was the last UK Top 20 hit for Gerry & The Pacemakers. Which American singer/songwriter, who was once married to actress Sandra Dee, wrote the song?

Answer: Bobby Darin

"I'll Be There" was a number 15 hit for Gerry and The Pacemakers on the UK singles chart in 1965. It peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

The song was written by Bobby Darin. He released it as the B-Side of "Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey" which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 34 on the UK singles chart in 1960. "I'll Be There" peaked at number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100 but failed to chart in the UK.

Gerry and The Pacemakers were Les Chadwick (bass guitar), Les Maguire (piano), Freddie Marsden (drums) and Gerry Marsden (vocals, guitar). They had six Top Ten hits on the UK chart between 1963 & 1964 which included three number one hits. They were the first artists to have their first three releases peak at number one on the UK chart. They were the first artists to be replaced and in turn to replace The Beatles at number one on the UK chart.

4. "I'll Cry Instead" came from which Beatles album that was released in 1964?

Answer: A Hard Day's Night

While "I'll Cry Instead" wasn't used in the original film, it was later added when "A Hard Day's Night" was released for home use (video/DVD). It actually was used for a prologue if you will - the music behind a showing of still photographs before the movie starts.

5. Which well-known Australian group had a hit with "I'll Never Find Another You" in 1965? Here are a few of the lyrics to help you: "There's a new world somewhere They call the promised land. And I'll be there someday If you will hold my hand I still need you there beside me No matter what I do For I know I'll never find Another you."

Answer: The Seekers

"I'll Never Find Another You" was the first UK hit single for the Seekers and, in the UK, was the best selling single of that year. It reached number two on the "Billboard" Easy Listening Chart, and number four on the Pop Chart. In 2011 this song was added to the "National Film and Sound Archive of Australia's Sounds of Australia" registry.

The song was covered with some success by Sonny James in the US in 2006.

The Seekers also had hits with "A World of Our Own", "The Carnival is Over", and "Georgy Girl", to name a few.

They formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1962 and were the first Australian pop music group to have major chart success in the UK and the US. In 1968 they were named "Joint Australians of the Year", at that time being the only group to achieve this. They disbanded in 1968, but reunited in 1992. The group was inducted into the Australian "Aria Hall of Fame" in 1995. On the 40th anniversary of their formation, Australia Post issued a postage stamp in their honour.

The Seekers are: vocals, piano and tambourine - Judith Durham; double bass and vocals - Athol Guy; twelve string guitar, banjo and vocals - Keith Potger; guitar, mandolin, banjo and vocals -Bruce Woodley.

6. Warhol superstar and The Velvet Underground collaborator Nico recorded a Bob Dylan-penned song for her debut solo album "Chelsea Girl". The song had already been released as a single by Judy Collins. What song am I talking about?

Answer: I'll Keep It with Mine

German-born Nico rose to fame as a model, went on to feature in films (including "La Dolce Vita"), and then got into music via The Rolling Stones' Brian Jones. She met Andy Warhol and was in a couple of his films, one of which was called "Chelsea Girls". Through Warhol she got involved with The Velvet Underground and made the quintessential album "The Velvet Underground and Nico" with them in 1967.

Nico recorded "Chelsea Girl" in 1967 just after the aforesaid album with the Velvets, some of whom provided accompaniment for Nico solo. She had already met Bob Dylan in 1965, and he suggested she record his song "I'll Keep It with Mine". He had had many an unsatisfactory stab at it himself (recordings of which have since surfaced), and Judy Collins had released her version in 1965. Nico disparaged the album, which is very different from her more challenging later work, above all angered by the use of flutes!

About the red herrings: "I'll Be Your Mirror" was sung by Nico, but on the aforementioned The Velvet Underground album. "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" can be found on the B-side to The Byrds' second single, "All I Really Want to Do" (which was also written by Dylan). "I'll Be Your Handbag" is on Shane MacGowan & The Popes' debut album, "The Snake".

7. Who had a 1965 top ten Billboard Hot 100 hit with "I'll Be Doggone"?

Answer: Marvin Gaye

"I'll Be Doggone" was written by Smokey Robinson, Warren Moore and Marvin Tarplin. It was released in the US in January 1965 on the Tamla record label.

The song is about a man who will be "doggone" about most things his lady does, but will be "long gone" if she ever hurts him in any way.

"I'll Be Doggone" gave Marvin Gaye his third top-ten pop hit, when it peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1965; the first two being "Pride And Joy" which peaked at number ten in 1963 and "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You" which peaked at number six in 1965.

8. Written originally for Jenny Westendorf by her husband, this nostalgic song talks about times and lands far away. It's been adapted many times since, but what was the 1875 version called?

Answer: I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen

But is trying to go back the remedy?

Although this song was written in 1875 by a German immigrant for his homesick wife, this song struck such a poignant chord with Irish migrants that they adopted it as their own. It's brought tears to homesick Irish eyes ever since. It's been recorded by many artists including Bing Crosby, Elvis, and Slim Whitman.

"I'll Be Home for Christmas" was recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943. "I'll Go Crazy" was a James Brown and The Famous Flames single in 1960. "I'll Remember April" is a jazz standard.

9. What 1972 hit by The Staples Singers was featured prominently in a memorable scene in the 1986 movie "Children of a Lesser God"?

Answer: I'll Take You There

This chart topper was recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, featuring the funky, reggae "Muscle Shoals sound."

William Hurt and Marlee Matlin dance to this tune in a very poignant scene in "Children of a Lesser God". No doubt this scene among many others helped Matlin win the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1987.

10. Originally a hit for Bobbie Gentry in the UK, "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart in 1969. But which iconic American songstress had a big hit with this song, the following year?

"I'll Never Fall In Love Again", was written by Burt Bachrach and Hal David for the 1968 musical "Promises, Promises". At the 1969 Grammys it was nominated for Song of the Year.

Bobby Gentry had chart success with this song before it was released by Dionne Warwick in 1970. Warwick's version was arranged and produced by Burt Bachrach.
