I Am the Walrus Trivia Quiz

The Beatles declared 'I Am the Walrus' in 1967, but they are not the only band to use a song title to tell you who, or what, they are. Here is a random selection of some of the others, mostly based on UK hits which may not be so well known to US players.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Wurzels, from England's West Country, reached number three in the UK in 1976 singing about being drinkers of which alcoholic beverage?

Answer: Cider

The Wurzels come from Somerset and their songs are based on their rustic origins (much exaggerated), and are often based on the tunes of other songs with words rewritten to suit. 'I Am a Cider Drinker' was sung to the tune of 'Una Paloma Blanca' and a previous (number one) UK hit was 'I've Got a Brand New Combine Harvester', a parody of Melanie's 'Brand New Key'.

Their original singer was Adge Cutler, who died in 1974 following a car accident on his way home from performing in a concert.
2. Shane Fenton told us 'I'm a Moody Guy' in 1961, but cooed his way to much greater success after changing his name to which of these?

Answer: Alvin Stardust

'I'm a Moody Guy' reached only number nineteen on the UK Singles Chart and Fenton (whose real name was Bernard Jewry) dropped out of sight for ten years or so. He re-appeared as Alvin Stardust to take advantage of the glam rock scene, dressed in leather and wearing gloves when he performed.

He had hits such as 'My Coo-Ca-Choo' in 1973 and 'Jealous Mind' in 1974 and went on to perform in musicals, including 'Godspell'. Marc Bolan was the singer for T-Rex and Garry Glitter led the Glitter Band.
3. In 1968, Lulu informed us she was which of these animals?

Answer: Tiger

'I'm A Tiger' reached number nine on the UK Singles Chart, but had no success in the USA despite Lulu having reached number one on the US Billboard Chart the previous year with 'To Sir, With Love'. Conversely, that song was never released as a single in the UK, although the film of the same name, in which Lulu acted with Sidney Poitier, was made in Britain. I hope you didn't choose the pussy-cat and the lion and cougar were also red herrings.
4. Which teen idol and television star declared 'I'm a Clown' in 1973?

Answer: David Cassidy

The song was a number three hit for David in 1973 on the UK Singles Chart, listed as a joint 'A' side with 'Some Kind of Summer'. Neither of them rings any bells with me, but Cassidy enjoyed great success in the early 1970s linked to his appearances in the television series 'The Partridge Family', who also had hits under that name with David being lead singer.

The other singers were also active around that time, with Davy Jones being one of The Monkees.
5. The Who made a contribution to the 'I Am' genre with which title telling us that 'I'm a ______'?

Answer: Boy

'I'm a Boy' reached number two on the UK Singles Chart in 1966 and was written by Pete Townshend. It lamented the fate of being the only boy with three sisters and a mother who wanted only girls. Instead of playing and coming home 'covered in mud', he had to suffer being used for hairstyling and make-up practice. One version of 'I'm a Man' was written by Steve Winwood and was a hit for the Spencer Davis Group. 'I'm a Man Not a Boy' was the follow up to Chesney Hawkes' big hit 'The One and Only' and 'I'm a Lad' doesn't exist (yet).
6. Which band, rather stating the obvious, sang 'I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)?

Answer: The Moody Blues

This song did rather better in the USA than in the band's home country of the UK, reaching number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100. It managed only 36 on the UK Singles Chart, both chart positions being from 1973. They are probably best remembered for 'Nights in White Satin' and their main strength lay in the albums they produced.

The original singer was Denny Laine, who sang on the band's first hit 'Go Now' in 1964, but he was replaced by Justin Hayward in 1966, which also saw a change of direction in their musical style. Laine did not suffer too much, though, as he went on to become part of Paul McCartney's post Beatles group, Wings.
7. The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band had one of the best names of all time, and also sang that they were which of these characters?

Answer: Urban Spaceman

'I'm the Urban Spaceman' was their biggest hit by far, reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart in 1968. The members included Neil Innes, who contributed much to the 'Monty Python' team and later went on to be one of 'The Rutles', a Beatles' parody. Paul McCartney was actually a co-producer of 'Urban Spaceman'. 'Space Cowboy' comes from the Steve Miller Band's song 'The Joker' (among others) and 'Space Oddity' is David Bowie's song. 'Rocket Man', of course, is one of Elton John's many hits.
8. 'I Am a Rock' was originally included on which Simon and Garfunkel album?

Answer: Sounds of Silence

The song originally appeared on 'The Paul Simon Songbook', an album recorded in the UK by Paul Simon as a solo artist in 1965. Most of the songs on this record were re-recorded for later albums by Simon and Garfunkel. However, two of them had been included on 'Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.', recorded in 1964 in the USA by the duo.

The album made no impact as this was the Beatle mania time. As one of these was 'Sound of Silence', the quality of the writing was eventually recognised and the rest, as they say, is history.
9. The lyrics 'yes, I am wise, but it's wisdom born of pain' are from which of these songs?

Answer: I Am Woman

A huge hit for Helen Reddy in the USA where it reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1972, the song did not chart in the UK. It is played regularly, though, and Helen did reach number five on the UK Singles Chart in 1974 with 'Angie Baby'. 'I Am Woman' was co-written by Helen Reddy and, unsurprisingly, has been adopted by the women's liberation movement.

'Roadrunner' was a hit for Junior Walker and the All Stars, 'Believer' for the Monkees and 'Your Man' for Wham! (George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley).
10. Rather less informative than some of the titles in this quiz is 'I Am What I Am', which was a hit in 1983 for which disco diva?

Answer: Gloria Gaynor

The song came from the musical 'La Cage Aux Folles', and states that the singer should be accepted for what they are -'what I am needs no excuses'. Gloria's version reached number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart, but did not register in the USA, managing only a lowly position on the Billboard R & B Chart.

It has become associated with the 'Gay Pride' movement. Chaka Khan could have had her own question in this quiz with 'I'm Every Woman' and Donna Summer sang 'Hot Stuff' and 'I Feel Love'. Candi Staton is probably best known for 'Young Hearts Run Free'.
