Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the song "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" by 10cc, which airline is mentioned?

Answer: It is never mentioned

"I'm Mandy, Fly Me" gave 10cc a number six hit on the UK singles chart in 1976. It peaked at number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 the same year.

10cc were Lol Creme (guitar and keyboards), Kevin Godley (vocals and drums), Graham Gouldman (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and Eric Stewart (vocals, guitar and keyboards). They were one of the best and most innovative British groups of the '70s.

10cc had eleven Top Ten hits on the UK singles chart between 1972 and 1978. This included the three number one hits, "Rubber Bullets", "I'm Not In Love" and "Dreadlock Holiday", the last of which was their last UK Top Ten hit.

Growing differences between Godley/Creme and Stewart/Gouldman became more apparent during the recording of the album "How Dare You" in 1976. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left the group and 10cc became a three piece band with the addition of their tour back-up drummer Paul Burgess. Other musicians joined the band later.

2. Nelly Furtado sang this catchy song which reached number one in Canada, but only got to number five in the UK charts. What animal is missing from the title? 'I'm Like A ...'

Answer: Bird

Canadian singer Furtado sang this song about warning a guy that she likes her freedom and may not be able to commit fully to a relationship, meaning she's like a bird and can fly away anytime.

3. On his 1973 album "Ringo", Ringo Starr sang a song written for him by John Lennon. What is the title of this song?

Answer: I'm The Greatest

Ringo asked John Lennon for a song to include on his album "Ringo". John played piano, George Harrison played lead guitar, and Billy Preston, who was the only artist ever given a credit on a Beatles record ("Get Back"), played organ. Klaus Voormann, who designed the cover of The Beatles album "Revolver", played bass guitar. John Lennon was going to record "I'm The Greatest" himself for his "Imagine" album but gave it to Ringo instead.

Of the alternative choices for this question: "I'm In Love" was recorded by both Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin, "I'm Jealous" was recorded by Ike And Tina Turner, and "I'm Leavin'" was recorded by Elvis Presley.

4. On their album "Idjit Savant", The Dickies' singer claimed he was "stuck in a condo" with a hugely famous actor. He mentions butter, a shooting incident, and even a reference to a Mafia boss. Who was he singing about? "I'm Stuck in a Condo with..."?

Answer: Marlon Brando

In true Dickies' style, the song's lyrics tell of a rather ridiculous scenario in which a pizza delivery bloke is being lectured on "the wages of sin" by Mr Marlon Brando, who's ordered a pepperoni pizza. The chorus is the poor lad's plaintive plea for help:

"I'm stuck inside a condo with Mr. Marlon Brando
He's heavy and he's hairy
He's really scaring me...Marlon Brando"

The reference to butter refers to the film "Last Tango In Paris", and the Mafia boss is of course "The Godfather", both of which starred Brando. The shooting incident refers to Brando's son Christian Brando who shot his sister's boyfriend dead in 1990.

The album "Idjit Savant" also includes the track "I'm On Crack", which might have been a less far-fetched claim since the band had been riddled with drug problems. The drummer on this album, Jonathan Melvoin, died of a heroin overdose shortly after its recording.

In their early days The Dickies had claimed "(I'm Stuck In a Pagoda With) Tricia Toyota", and sung about "Bowling With Bedrock Barney". As far as I know they have never been up to anything with Errol Flynn.

5. This group released "I'm a Believer" in 1966, and the song's popularity was spurred on by the group's hit television show. Coincidentally, the flip side of the single was "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone". What group was it?

Answer: The Monkees

"I'm a Believer" enjoyed chart topping success during the first year of The Monkees' TV show. Written by and previously recorded by Neil Diamond, this song was later covered by Smash Mouth and featured in the 2001 hit movie "Shrek".

6. "I'm Still Standing" was an international hit for this famous British singer/songwriter in 1982. What is his name?

Answer: Elton John

"I'm Still Standing" appeared on Elton John's 1983 album "Too Low for Zero". It was written by John and Bernie Taupin. When the song was released as a single, it reached number 12 in the US, number three in Australia, number four in the UK, and number one in Canada and Switzerland.

Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in March 1947 in Middlesex, UK, Sir Elton Hercules John, CBE, is a pianist, composer and singer-songwriter. He and his song-writing partner Bernie Taupin have been writing songs together since 1967, and they have collaborated on over 30 albums. John's career has spanned five decades and he has sold over 300 million records.

He has had many Top Ten hits, including "Rocket Man", "Crocodile Rock", "Daniel", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle In the Wind", "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" (with Kiki Dee), "Song for Guy", and "Nikita", just to name a few.

He won an Academy Award in 1996 for Best Original Song from the film "The Lion King", "Can You Feel the Love Tonight". Two of his other songs from the film, "Circle of Life" and "Hakuna Matata", were also nominated for an Academy Award. He has been nominated for and won several Grammy Awards and Tony Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and both he and Bernie Taupin were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in February 1998 for his charitable work.

7. Which of the following songs was not recorded by jazz diva Billie Holiday?

Answer: I'm An Animal

The "I'm An Animal" I'm thinking of was on Sly and the Family Stone's 1968 album "Life", but an Australian band called The Chocolate released a single of the same name in 1969. Eric Burdon recorded a song called "I Used To Be An Animal" in the late 1980s, and Swedish punk band Sixten Redlös released "I Wish I Woz An Animal" in 1985.

Frank Sinatra was the first to record "I'm A Fool To Want You", a song he'd had a hand in writing. Billie Holiday recorded it for her second-to-last album, "Lady In Satin" (1958), just a year before her death. Despite the quality of Holiday's voice being technically inferior to her earlier recordings, to my mind her rendition is one of the most moving pop songs ever recorded. Holiday was by then a drunken wreck, scarred both emotionally and physically, and the anguish she conveys is peerless.

"I'm Pulling Through" was on the B-side to "Time on My Hands", whilst "I'm All For You" was the B-side to "I Hear Music". Both records were released in 1940 on the Okeh label. They have popped up on various compilations since then.

8. Scrumpy and Western band The Wurzels claimed to be imbibers of the fermented juice of many people's favourite fruit. The song, released in 1976, was called, "I Am A ...". What are the missing words?

Answer: Cider Drinker

The song "I Am A Cider Drinker" is (very) roughly based on George Baker Selection's song "Paloma Blanca".

The late Adge Cutler formed The Wurzels in 1966, so the single release of "I Am A Cider Drinker" was limited to 1,966 copies, therefore if anyone has a copy now, it may be worth something. Apparently, Cutler got the name The Wurzels from the root vegetable mangelwurzel, which is a sort of beet mainly used by farmers as fodder. To further embrace the band's rural West Country roots they called their second EP "Scrumpy and Western", and in doing so they invented a whole new genre of music, Scrumpy and Western. Since then they have remained the genre's best-known, if not only, exponents.

9. Who was the young American songstress who had a number one hit in 1960 with the song "I'm Sorry"?

Answer: Brenda Lee

Brenda Lee was only 15 years old when she released "I'm Sorry" in 1960. It is stated in the "Billboard Book of Number One Hits" that ". . . Brenda Lee recorded the song early in 1960 but her label, Decca Records, held it from release for several months out of concern that a 15-year-old girl was not mature enough to sing about unrequited love." The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and number 12 on the UK Singles chart.

Joey Heatherton released a remake of the song in 1972, but the best it could manage was number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Brenda Mae Tarpley (Brenda Lee), was born in 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia. She started singing when she was five years old, and won a singing competition when she was six. The prize was singing live on an Atlanta radio show and she performed there for the next twelve months. By the time she was ten, she was the family's major breadwinner. When she was 12, Decca Records put her under contract. She had many hits in the late 50s and early 60s, some of them being "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", "Jambalaya", "Sweet Nothin's", "I Want to Be Wanted", and "All Alone Am I".

She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. She is also a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.

10. In the song title "I'm In Love With A ________ Film Star", what is the missing nationality?

Answer: German

"I'm In Love With A German Film Star" was a number 25 hit for The Passions on the UK singles chart in 1981. It did not chart in the USA.

"I'm In Love With A German Film Star" was written by The Passions. The lyrics were written and sung by band member Barbara Gogan. They were a British post-punk band who were formed in 1978. The song is about Steve Connelly, a one time roadie for The Clash and The Sex Pistols. He had minor roles in a number of German movies. The Passions who were a one hit wonder on the UK singles chart, disbanded in 1983.
