Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Platanista minor

Answer: Water

Platanista minor is the scientific name of the Indus River dolphin, a subspecies of the South Asian river dolphin and one of the world's most endangered cetaceans (marine mammals). The Indus River dolphin is primarily found in the Indus River in Pakistan and northwestern India. It is relatively small, of pale grayish-brown color, measures between 1.5 to 2.5 meters in length, and has a long snout and a rounded forehead. It emits high-pitched sounds, which bounce off objects and return as echoes, helping it to create a mental map of its surroundings.

This subspecies is critically endangered. The population has been declining primarily due to factors like habitat degradation, pollution, water diversion for agriculture, and accidental entanglement in fishing nets. Several conservation initiatives have been put in place to protect the Indus River dolphin which include establishing protected areas, raising awareness among local communities, and enforcing fishing regulations.
2. Ailurus fulgens

Answer: Land

The red panda (Ailurus fulgens) is a mammal native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. It bears a striking resemblance to the giant panda but is much smaller in size, with rust-colored fur and a bushy, ringed tail. Red pandas are primarily herbivorous, feeding on bamboo shoots, fruits, and insects. They are solitary and nocturnal creatures, known for their agility in climbing trees, and are skilled at using their semi-retractable claws.

Due to habitat loss and poaching, red pandas are classified as an endangered species, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts to protect these unique animals.
3. Phocoena sinus

Answer: Water

Phocoena sinus, commonly known as the vaquita, is a critically endangered porpoise species found exclusively in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Vaquitas are the world's smallest cetaceans, with distinctive dark rings around their eyes and dark patches on their lips. They feed on fish, crustaceans, and squid and swim in the shallow waters close to the shore.

Tragically, their population has drastically declined due to illegal gillnet fishing practices, with estimates suggesting that only a few individuals remain in the wild. Conservationists and government efforts have been initiated to save the vaquita from extinction, including bans on gillnet fishing and conservation measures to protect their habitat.
4. Pseudoryx nghetinhensis

Answer: Land

In 1992, in the forests of Northern Vietnam, the Ministry of Forestry of Vietnam and WWF discovered a skull of an unusual mammal with long parallel horns, so far unknown. It was the skull of a Pseudoryx nghetinhensis or saola, or Asian unicorn, a bovine but antelope-looking species, native to the Annamite Mountains' forests of Vietnam and Laos. Its name, saola, means "spindle-horned" in the native language and the impressively long horns (up to 50cm) are indeed very sharp and pointy at the end. The animal is a herbivore and has distinctive white markings on the face and large scent glands on the muzzle.

The saolas are threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and accidental snaring by local communities. Efforts are ongoing to protect and conserve this critically endangered species and its habitat.
5. Rhincodon typus

Answer: Water

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) holds the title of the world's largest living fish. With its distinctive checkerboard pattern and a mouth that can stretch to nearly one and a half meters wide, the whale shark gracefully navigates the world's oceans in search of food to sustain its massive size. Despite its size, reaching lengths of up to 20m or more, this filter-feeding behemoth subsists primarily on plankton, small fish, and other microscopic organisms. It is known to dive to 1000m in warm seas across the globe, from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean.

The species is fished mainly in the Philippines, Taiwan, and China for its meat, oil, and skin and it is listed as endangered at the time of writing due to being bycatch in nets, accidental hits by vessels, and overfishing.
6. Danaus plexippus

Answer: Land

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is renowned for its vibrant orange and black wings that adorn gardens and meadows across North America. These delicate creatures embark on an incredible migration journey, covering thousands of miles from their breeding grounds in Canada and the United States to the oyamel fir forests of central Mexico. The monarch's life cycle begins with the transformation from egg to caterpillar and culminates in the metamorphosis within its chrysalis. Milkweed plants play a crucial role in this process, serving as both a nursery for their eggs and a primary food source for the voracious caterpillars.

The monarch butterfly is listed as endangered since it is affected by the disappearance of milkweeds due to the urbanization of agricultural areas, herbicides, and genetically modified crops.
7. Cheilinus undulatus

Answer: Water

Cheilinus undulatus, commonly known as the humphead wrasse, is an impressive species of coral reef fish found in the Indo-Pacific region. Renowned for its striking appearance, this species is characterized by its large, thick lips and a prominent hump on its forehead, giving it a distinctive profile. The humphead wrasse is one of the largest reef fish, capable of reaching lengths exceeding 2m. It inhabits coral-rich environments, including lagoons and outer reef slopes, where it plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling populations of invertebrates such as sea urchins.

Unfortunately, the humphead wrasse faces threats from overfishing, habitat degradation, and the aquarium trade, leading to conservation concerns for this remarkable species. Efforts are underway to protect and preserve the humphead wrasse, highlighting the importance of sustainable management practices to ensure the survival of the fish and the health of coral reef ecosystems.
8. Caretta caretta

Answer: Water

Caretta caretta, commonly known as the loggerhead sea turtle, is a globally distributed species of marine turtle. They are the most common turtle species in the Mediterranean, where they swim in the waters of the Aegean and the Libyan Seas but these remarkable creatures are found in various oceans, nesting on sandy beaches and traversing vast distances during their migrations. Recognized for its distinctive large head and powerful jaw, the loggerhead sea turtle is named for its robust, logger-like skull. Loggerheads are crucial to marine ecosystems as they help control jellyfish populations and contribute to nutrient cycling.

Despite their vital role, loggerhead sea turtles face numerous threats, including habitat destruction from tourism and light pollution, water pollution and oil spills, and accidental capture in fishing gear. Conservation efforts are underway worldwide to protect nesting sites, implement sustainable fishing practices, and raise awareness about the importance of preserving these ancient and endangered marine species.
9. Elephas maximus borneensis

Answer: Land

Elephas maximus borneensis, commonly known as the Borneo elephant or pygmy elephant, is a subspecies of the Asian elephant native to the island of Borneo. These elephants are distinctive for their smaller size compared to other Asian elephant subspecies, making them one of the smallest elephant species in the world. Borneo elephants have large ears, and long trunks, and are known for their social behavior, living in close-knit family groups. Their habitats include a range of environments, from forests to grasslands.

Unfortunately, they face significant threats due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and human-wildlife conflict. Conservation initiatives are crucial for the survival of Elephas maximus borneensis, focusing on protecting their habitats, mitigating conflicts with local communities, and raising awareness about the importance of their preservation.
10. Panthera pardus orientalis

Answer: Land

Panthera pardus orientalis, commonly known as the Amur leopard and also called the Manchurian leopard or the Korean leopard, is a critically endangered subspecies of leopard native to the Russian Far East and parts of northeastern China and the Korean Peninsula. Recognized for its stunning spotted coat, the Amur leopard is one of the rarest big cats in the world. This elusive predator primarily inhabits temperate forests and is adapted to the harsh climate of the Russian far east. Their lifespan in the wild is 10 to 15 years.

The Amur leopard faces severe threats, including habitat loss, poaching, and depletion of its prey base. Conservation efforts have been implemented to safeguard this subspecies, involving habitat preservation, anti-poaching measures, and community engagement.
