Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On April 7, 1986 "Wrestlemania II" took place from three different venues. One of the featured bouts was a Twenty Man Battle Royal that also featured some stars of the NFL. Which of the following football players did not wrestle in the match?

Answer: Ed "Too Tall" Jones

While involved with the match, the legendary Ed Jones did not wrestle but rather served as an outside official alongside Dick Butkus. Perry, Fralic and Covert joined Russ Francis as active NFL players in the match. The late Ernie Holmes and Harvey Martin also wrestled but were retired by this time.
2. "Wrestlemania II" also saw The British Bulldogs finally succeed in their quest for the WWF Tag Team Titles by defeating rivals Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake. What stipulation was added to this match if the Bulldogs had lost?

Answer: They would never get another Title shot during Valentine and Beefcake's reign

For months The Bulldogs had nearly beaten Valentine and Beefcake aka "The Dream Team" only to fall short each time. Usually the champions got themselves intentionally disqualified or counted out to retain the belts. Very often they resorted to some illegal tactics or interference from their manager Johnny Valiant to get a cheap win. Knowing their luck would run out eventually, they insisted the only way they would have the match at "Wrestlemania II" was that it be The Bulldogs last opportunity. They lost.
3. On February 8, 1986 in the famed Boston Garden, Randy "Macho Man" Savage defeated Tito Santana to win the WWF Intercontinental Title. What did Savage do to Tito to win the championship?

Answer: Punched him with a foreign object

Late in the match Randy injured his knee to point where he was hobbling around the ring. Knowing Santana's mastery of "The Figure Four Leglock" he knew he had to end the bout quick. When Santana lifted him for a back suplex, Savage punched him right in the puss with an object he had gotten from his tights moments before. An interesting note is that the referee was Danny Davis whose officiating would become more and more heel biased during the course of the year.
4. In November 1986 in a highly anticipated televised match Randy Savage defended the WWF Intercontinental Title against arch rival Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. Realizing Steamboat's threat to the title, "Macho Man" intentionally injured him during the match by doing what?

Answer: Crushing his larynx

Hoping to eliminate the challenge of Ricky Steamboat once and for all, Savage delivered one of his trademark "Flying Double Ax Handles" as Ricky lay across the ringside barricade. As Steamboat writhed in agony on the mat, Savage then delivered a blow to his throat with the timekeeper's bell. To the horror of fans and viewers at home Steamboat was carried away struggling for breath. To his credit "The Dragon" made it back and defeated his foe for the title at "Wrestlemania III" in one of the all time greatest matches.
5. Just weeks after injuring Steamboat, on a segment of "Saturday Nights Main Event" Savage defended the WWF Intercontinental Title against another heel. Ironically this heel also had a previous history with Ricky Steamboat. Who was that wrestler?

Answer: Jake "The Snake" Roberts

On the November 29, 1986 segment of "Saturday Nights Main Event" Savage defended his Intercontinental Title against Jake "The Snake" Roberts in rare double heel match. Just months earlier on the same program Roberts had delivered a brutal DDT to Ricky on the cement floor which caused a legitimate head trauma. Wrestling fans have short memories because "The Snake" was cheered during the bout.

In fact it was the positive fan reaction this night that set the wheels in motion for Jake's full fledged face turn in February 1987.
6. In June 1986 this wily ring veteran made his WWF debut as a member of the infamous "Heenan Family". In the late summer Bobby Heenan had an elaborate "Coronation Ceremony" in which he was crowned "King". Who was this legend who became a monarch?

Answer: "Handsome" Harley Race

By the time he had made his WWF debut veteran Harley Race had enjoyed eight reigns as NWA Heavyweight Champion and was in the twilight of his storied career. Knowing that a title reign of any kind wasn't in the cards, The WWF chose to pay homage to Race by making him "King of the WWF". The "King" gimmick lasted until 1991 and was worn by Haku, Hacksaw Duggan and finally Randy Savage.
7. In September 1986 "Rowdy" Roddy Piper returned to the WWF after a five month hiatus. Immediately embraced by the fans, Piper wrestled preliminary jobber A.J. Petruzzi in his return bout. What did Roddy do that was so significant in this contest?

Answer: Wrestled the match with one arm behind his back

Ever the showman, Roddy Piper, now a face tucked one arm behind his back and proceeded to pummel Petruzzi like that. Although Piper did take it out to deliver the finishing blow, he quickly tucked the arm back and pinned his foe with one foot on the chest.
8. In the summer of 1986, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan suffered "The Great Betrayal" when he was backstabbed by Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff. What do Hogan do that pushed Orndorff over the edge?

Answer: Refused a phone call because he was lifting weights

In the weeks leading up to the eventual betrayal, Bobby "The Brain" Heenan and "Adorable" Adrian Adonis had been needling Paul Orndorff on Adonis's interview spot "The Flower Shop". They referred to him as "Hulk Junior" and said that Hogan would never be there when Orndorff needed him. To prove them wrong Paul said he could get Hulk on the phone right then and there and proceeded to drop a dime. Hogan was busy lifting weights and told Orndorff he would be there in a few minutes. With egg on his face, the incensed Orndorff turned on Hogan a few weeks later at the conclusion of a tag team bout against King Kong Bundy and the late John Studd. One of the best feuds of all time had started.
9. In the early summer of 1986, aging manager Freddie Blassie retired and sold his stable of thugs to a newcomer. Who was this relatively unknown manager who became the manager for The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff and briefly Hercules Hernandez?

Answer: Slick

Ken Johnson aka "The Doctor of Style" Slick made his WWF debut in August 1986 by becoming Blassie's hand chosen successor. In September Slick unveiled the first protege of his own, "The Natural" Butch Reed. In reality Johnson had been Reed's manager in the Mid South territory and when Reed dropped a "Loser Leaves Town" match to Bruiser Brody in June 1986 the stipulation was that Reed and Slick both had to go. Sneaky and underhanded Slick remained with the WWF right up until 1993, he never did manage a champion though.
10. In the late summer of 1986 this rough and rugged veteran had a brief stint in the WWF. Given a gimmick that emphasized his southern background, he was a disappointment despite great successes elsewhere. Who was he?

Answer: Dick Slater

Nicknamed "The Rebel", the tough as nails Dick Slater had a dismal stint in the WWF during the later half of 1986. This is very surprising considering the fact that Slater had many friends on the roster including Rick Steamboat, Bob Orton, Harley Race, Greg Valentine, Butch Reed, and Jake Roberts.

In addition the gimmick while not the best, was not the worst either. Go figure, that is wrestling for you.
11. In the summer of 1986, Captain Lou Albano revealed his latest find; the masked Machines. Although many "guest" Machines were used from time to time, the primary ones were The Super and The Big Machine. Who portrayed these masked man?

Answer: Bill Eadie & Blackjack Mulligan

The roles of The Super and The Big Machine were portrayed by Bill Eadie, who had previously been The Masked Superstar and the legendary Blackjack Mulligan. While Mulligan was winding down his career, Eadie still had some bright days ahead. In January 1987 he took on the role of Demolition member Ax who along with Smash won three WWF Tag Team Titles from 1988-1990.
12. On August 28, 1986 at The Toronto Exhibition Stadium, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan battled Paul Orndorff on a card which later became known as "The Big Event". Which of the following matches was not on the undercard?

Answer: Tito Santana vs. Bob Orton

This card, which later became known as "The Big Event" because of the 74,000 fans that showed up to witness it, saw Hogan defeat Orndorff by disqualification. On the undercard Harley Race pinned Pedro Morales, JYD defeated Adrian Adonis by count out, and Jacques & Raymond Rougeau defeated The Dream Team among other bouts. Both Tito Santana and Bob Orton were not on this card, despite still being pretty over at the time.
13. During the spring of 1986 Ricky Steamboat and Jake "The Snake" Roberts became embroiled in a bitter feud. As the feud progressed, in order to combat the presence of Jake's pet python "Damien" Ricky began to bring his own mascot to the ring. What was it?

Answer: A Komodo Dragon

In order to fight fire with fire Steamboat began to bring a Komodo Dragon with him to the ring during his matches with Jake Roberts. This was indeed an equalizer because the Komodo Dragon is a natural snake predator.
14. In fall of 1986 The Killer Bees, in order to liven up their gimmick, began to do this during their matches. What was it?

Answer: Put on Masks

Veteran grapplers Jim Brunzell and B. Brian Blair introduced a gimmick they called "Masked Confusion". The Bees would start out wrestling the contest as normal however when either one got in trouble they would go under the ring and reemerge wearing identical masks.

The opponents were almost always duped and the wrong Bee would enter the ring and get the quick win. This got very old fast and never did get Brunzell and Blair the WWF Tag Team Championships.
15. In March 1986 ,as a buildup to his very hyped boxing match against Mr. T at "Wrestlemania II", Roddy Piper did something very humiliating to T's midget wrestler friend The Haiti Kid. What was this?

Answer: Gave him a Mohawk Haircut

On a televised segment Piper and his longtime henchmen Bob Orton kidnapped The Haiti Kid who had just won a preliminary match. The Kid had been very vocal in his support of Mr. T which drew the ire of "The Rowdy One". In one of finest moments of "Piper's Pit", Orton held the Haiti Kid while Piper gave him a Mohawk to make him look like Mr. T. Priceless!
