Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the caterpillar's colouring?

Answer: Green body with a red head

The caterpillar also has six brown legs, yellow and green eyes, a green nose and purple/blue antennas.

In real life, caterpillars are mainly camouflage coloured to help confuse their predators. Some caterpillars have body parts that mimic and look like thorns, some look like bird droppings and some look as though they have false eyes on the rear end of their bodies!
2. Which children's television show has "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" appeared on?

Answer: Sesame Street

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" appeared on Sesame Street in the early 1990s.

The Walt Disney Company have also adapted the story, as well as four other Eric Carle books, which are avilable on DVD. There are also rumours that there may be a film made eventually too, with rights sold at £1 million!
3. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" was first published in the 1960s.

Answer: true

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar" has been re-published numerous times over the years, but was first published in 1969. It was the second book that Eric Carle had both written and illustrated after "1,2,3 To The Zoo".

A copy of the book is sold as often as once every 57 seconds and it has also been translated into over fifty languages. Over 71 million copies have been sold so far.
4. What was the very first thing that the caterpillar ate?

Answer: An apple

After the caterpillar hatched from his egg on a Sunday morning he went looking for some food. On Monday he ate through one apple, on Tuesday he ate through two pears, on Wednesday he ate through three plums, on Thursday he ate through four strawberries, and on Friday he ate through five oranges.

99% of caterpillars are herbivores, although some do prefer to eat eggs, aphids, and insects and a few caterpillars are even cannibals!
5. The original title of the "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" was going to be "Metamorphosis and Me".

Answer: False

The book was actually going to be called "A Week with Willi Worm", although Eric Carle's editor advised him to change the title, as in his opinion a green worm would not make a very interesting or unique character for a children's story.

Eric Carle is an American children's writer and illustrator and 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' is his most well known book to date. He has also illustrated over 70 other books, including "1,2,3 To The Zoo", "The Mixed-Up Chameleon", "The Very Quiet Cricket" and "The Grouchy Ladybug".
6. On Saturday, the caterpillar ate through lots of different foods. What did the caterpillar eat from this list?

Answer: One slice of watermelon

He ate the most food on Saturday, including "one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon".

The following day on Sunday, was the last day the caterpillar ate. And on that day, he ate through just one nice green leaf, until he decided he wasn't hungry any more.
7. In 1999, Pizza Hut conducted a survey on people's favourite books. Which U.S. President listed "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" as one of his childhood favourites?

Answer: George W. Bush

Although George W. Bush was in fact 23 years old when the book was first published!
8. What does "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" not teach us about?

Answer: Months of the year

The book helps to teach the days of the week, counting up to five, a large variety of different foods and most importantly, it also teaches us about the life cycle of butterflies!
9. After the caterpillar had finished eating, where did he then stay for more than two weeks?

Answer: In a cocoon

A cocoon is the outer protective covering that caterpillars make to protect themselves, so that they can transform inside into butterflies.

Cocoons can be made out of silk, which caterpillars produce in their mouths. The silk is then mixed with leaves and is covered around the caterpillar's entire body. The caterpillar then spins a silk button to attach this cocoon to a branch or leaf, where it stays until it has transformed into a butterfly.
10. What happens to the caterpillar at the end of the story?

Answer: He turns into a beautiful butterfly

After he nibbles his way out of his cocoon, we can see that has transformed into a beautiful butterfly!
