Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The rules say, "Shouldn't exceed 22 x 14 x 9 in. / 23 x 36 x 56 cm." What are these rules?

Answer: Carry-on rules for American Airlines (effective 10/2016).

These are part of the rules for what to carry on the plane, for those who intend to carry a carry-on bag. Most luggage rules are the same for different airlines. The other choices in the question do not connect to the theme "carry on" except possibly the air-craft carrier, and the largest possible size of one of those is not going to be 22 inches in length.

The Galapagos tortoises have told me that they are allowed to grow without limit, and I suspect that they have a surly union rep, so no rules exist for their size allowance, and I do not mean to imply that they do. I don't want legal trouble with the Tortoise Union personnel (TUP).
2. "Why would I keep a stupid outfit like that?" Who in the world would carry on so about an outfit?

Answer: Carrie Fisher, on that famous Princess Leia gold bikini from "Star Wars"

The quote was in response to a question in a 2015 Press Conference. "CARRIE ON" the famous bikini... hah! I love this theme! The ruby slippers were donated to the Smithsonian so I doubt they would be called "stupid" by Ms. Garland. The drapes that Carol wore for the skit were just drapes with a curtain rod still in them, not really an outfit. And no person would refer to Princess Di's wedding gown as "stupid." Carrie carried on!
3. A Time Magazine Best Book in 2015, ISBN-13: 9781250049551, published by St. Martin's Press, had what title?

Answer: "Carry On" by Rainbow Rowell

The novel by Ms. Rowell is in the Young Adult science-fiction genre. The novel "Carry On" spins-off characters from her 2012 novel "FanGirl." Since it is the only answer choice that has the theme "Carry On" supported, Ms. Rainbow's book is the winner! I really like her name, too.
4. What phrase that can mean "lost it! Totally went bonkers"?

Answer: Carried on

"To carry on" is an expression that can mean "to act in a dramatic or silly way." Of course "carry on" means many things, hence the thematic quiz! And since it is a thematic quiz, our theme points to the answer "Carried on." Am I typing "thematic quiz" too many times? Sorry, I do carry on, don't I?
5. What is a way to paraphrase the following? "I say! Janice calls me on the phone and just carries on and on!"

Answer: "Janet is loquacious."

According to the Oxford University Press dictionary, "Loquacious" is defined as "tending to talk a great deal; talkative." "Laconic" means a "using few words" and "phlegmatic" means "calm and unemotional." Since Janet called on the phone, talking up a storm, carrying the phone to me is not right, although the theme may lead you to want to choose it. But don't choose it! Really, I wish no one would use "Phlegmatic" either; it is a disgusting word.
6. This was a motto on a British motivational poster in 1939 that carried our theme. What was the motto?

Answer: "Keep Calm and Carry On."

Uncle Sam was from the U.S. army recruitment posters, and the other "mottoes" were made up by me. The "Keep Calm" motto was on the third motivational poster created by the British Ministry of Information before the Second World War. It featured a symbol representing the crown of King George VI, above the sentence.

The first two posters of the Ministry featured mottoes "Freedom is in Peril: Defend it with all Your Might", and "Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution will bring us Victory".
7. A song by the group "Kansas" was released in 1976 and contained our theme words, in lyrics and title. What was this song?

Answer: "Carry On Wayward Son"

The song was a single released in 1976, and in 1977 was on Kansas' album "Leftoverature." It began with the lyrics: "Carry on my wayward son.
There'll be peace when you are done. Lay your weary head to rest. Don't you cry no more." The choices that contain our theme words but are not correct were made up by me. "Kansas" did not sing those songs.
8. JOKE: Two vultures walked onto a plane, complaining about the extra cost of this. On what was the extra cost levied? (Keep with our theme!)

Answer: Flight Carrion

Now, if I had not put "(Keep with our theme)" on the question, I would feel bad about the "Avian Aviation" and "Dead Weight" options, because vultures on a plane are indeed avian in aviation, and vultures do tend to carry dead weight around, being eaters of dead animals.

But no. "CARRION" sounds like "CARRY ON," and using the definition of "Carrion" as "the flesh of dead animals" and "Vulture" as "any one of several large birds that eat dead animals and have a small and featherless head," we must choose "flight carrion" as their complaint to match our theme. Definitions are by the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

The fact that vultures have small featherless heads is not really germane to the joke, and really kind of rude. Scavengers have feelings too, Merriam-Webster.
9. I am now looking for a word that means "To carry on, in the face of adversity," as in "what a stalwart, devoted, dedicated person does." What is the word?

Answer: Persevere

"Presbyter" (a leader in a religious community) and "Preceptor" (a teacher) are nouns. We are looking for a verb. Although our devoted and dedicated person may indeed perspire, the best choice is "Persevere" which is defined as "To continue in a course of action even in the face of difficulty or with little or no prospect of success." (Dictionary by Oxford University Press)
10. Some advice is given from a famous book, that states "And anyone who carries their carcasses is to wash his clothes, since he will remain unclean until evening." From where is this quote taken?

Answer: The Bible

This is the (NIV version) Bible verse of Leviticus 11:25 on the rule of carrying carrion. Leviticus has rules for many circumstances. The carrying-of-carcasses rule is between the rule for which insects are considered unclean, and the information on characteristics of unclean animals. I must confess that I have tried three times to read all of the Bible's rules from Leviticus and there are a lot of words, and so I quit. I did not persevere; I did not carry on. I am not proud of this.
