Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which traditional Italian dish consists of pasta-like dumplings made of potato or semolina?

Answer: Gnocchi

Gnocchi is often eaten as a pasta or soup replacement in the first course of a meal, but can also be used as a side dish for a main course. Although traditionally an Italian dish, gnocchi is very popular in South America, initially made so by early Italian immigrants and then spreading and gaining fans even in areas that have no Italian history.
2. In 2010, which member of the Stallone family was inducted into the International Boxing Hall Of Fame?

Answer: Sylvester

Sylvester Stallone is probably best known for his portrayal of boxer Rocky Balboa, whom he has played in five different decades. His Rocky run started in the 70s with "Rocky" in 1976 and "Rocky II" in 1979 and continued in the 80s with "Rocky III" (1982) and "Rocky IV" (1985).

In the 90s came "Rocky V" (1990) and the new millennium saw "Rocky Balboa" in 2006 and "Creed" in 2015. He was inducted to the non participant category of the Boxing Hall of Fame for his contributions in promoting the image of the sport.
3. Sponge biscuits, sherry, jelly, fruit, whipped cream and which other ingredient make up a trifle?

Answer: Custard

Milk, egg yolks, vanilla and sugar make the delight that is custard, but please, no thin watery custard. For me it has to be the thick stuff. Apart from trifle, custard is used in many other deserts, such as Boston cream pie, zabaglione, creme brulee and the wonderful Greek dessert of galaktoboureko.

A recipe for a trifle involving thick cream flavoured with sugar, ginger and rosewater can be found in cookery book, "The Good Huswifes Jewell" from 1585.
4. Which character, that appears in several James Bond movies, became a private detective in the novels after a villain used a Great White shark to torture him?

Answer: Felix Leiter

Although Leiter appeared in the first James Bond, "Dr. No" (1962) as a CIA operative, he later transferred to DEA, which is how he came to be working alongside Bond in "License to Kill" (1989), tracking down drug baron Franz Sanchez. Sanchez killed Leiter's new bride and lowered Leiter into a tank containing a Great White, from which he was rescued by Bond.

In the novels, the shark attack occurred in "Live And Let Die" (1954) and Leiter joined the Pinkerton detective agency after being fitted with a prosthetic leg and a hook to replace his gun hand, which he lost in the attack.
5. Which title was bestowed on Meghan Markle when she joined the British royal family in 2018?

Answer: Duchess

Former actress Markle married Prince Harry in May 2018 and became Duchess of Sussex. As a member of the royal family, she gave up her acting career and has immersed herself fully in royal life and charity work. Her first charity project as a member of royalty was assisting survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire in obtaining funding to publish a community cookery book, with all proceeds going towards survivor groups.
6. About whose marriage did Mozart write an opera?

Answer: Figaro

"The Marriage of Figaro" is a comic opera written by Mozart in 1786 about servant to Count Almaviva, Figaro, and his wedding to Susanna, maid to the Countess. I don't think it is too much of a spoiler to reveal that after much confusion and ingenuity in thwarting the efforts of the lascivious Count, the pair do finally manage to tie the knot.
7. In 1968, which Nottinghamshire player became the first batsman ever to hit six sixes in a single over in first class cricket?.

Answer: Garfield Sobers

Sobers was a West Indian cricketer, considered by many cricket fans to have been the best all round player ever. Although he originally captured the eye as a bowler when he entered the game, he soon found his niche as a batsman too and showed his prowess with his incredible six sixes off one over in 1968, which included five clean hit sixes and one which was carried over after the fielder fell over the boundary rope. Sobers retired in 1974 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975.
8. What was the name of the curious youth who, according to legend, peeped when Lady Godiva rode naked through the streets of Coventry?

Answer: Tom

According to legend, Lady Godiva rode naked through the Coventry streets as a protest against harsh tax laws imposed by her husband Leofric, Earl of Mercia. A condition of her ride to support the residents was that all people should either avert their eyes or remain indoors, and all complied, apart from a voyeuristic young tailor known only as Tom, but thereafter known as Peeping Tom.
According to some versions of the legend, Tom was blinded by the people of Coventry for his transgression.
9. What name is given to a short strap secured on the leg of a hawk, usually with a ring for attaching a leash?

Answer: Jess

A jess or jesses in plural are usually made of leather, often kangaroo leather and allow a falconer to control the bird while it is on the glove, or keep it tethered while on a perch. In North America and USA, northern goshawks and peregrine falcons are the most commonly used birds, while in the Middle East, the saker falcon is favoured.
10. What is the common bond?

Answer: Cats

All are the names of fictional cats. Gnocchi is Chef Pisghetti's cat in the "Curious George" animated TV show, while Sylvester is the Looney Tunes cat often seen pursuing Tweety Pie or Speedy Gonzales, as well as being the winner of three Oscars. Sufferin' succotash! Custard was a pink cat who lived next door to and got into many adventures with Roobarb the dog in UK children's TV show, "Roobarb and Custard" (1974). Felix the cat dates back to 1919 in the short movie, "Feline Follies" and continues to retain his popularity well into the 21st century. Duchess is the cat that falls in love with the rascally Thomas O'Malley in the 1970 Disney movie, "The Aristocats", while Figaro is also a Disney cat, first appearing in "Pinocchio" in 1940. Garfield, the lasagna loving cat first appeared in the comic strip of the same name in 1978, while Tom is much older, first appearing in Hanna-Barbera cartoons in 1940, and has amused children of all ages in his battles with Jerry mouse. Finally, Jess is the cat of the world's friendliest mailman, Postman Pat, who made his debut in 1981.
