Question 1 of 10
1. One of my favorite songs is "Running on Empty" by Jackson Browne. It really resonates with me, particularly because of lines like, "In '65 I was 17..." and "In '69 I was 21..." because I was also 17 in 1965 and 21 in 1969. When I first got a full-time job, retirement age was considered 65. So in what year did Jackson Browne and I reach 65? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. I was born in Fort Dodge, but grew up and graduated from high school in Waterloo. I got my degree in Cedar Falls and I've lived over 40 years in Odebolt while ending my career path in Ida Grove. Can you guess what state all these place are, where I've lived my life? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. One of my favorite activities is officiating high school sports. I have served as a line judge for over 35 years. Of the following sports, which pair has officials designated specifically as line judges? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Back in the '70s and '80s, Odebolt also had a community theater. Among the roles I've played are Teddy "Teddy Roosevelt" Brewster (who has two eccentric aunts), Charles Webb (editor of the "Grover's Corners Sentinel"), and Bill Starbuck (a charming confidence man living in the Great Depression). In which of the following plays did I NOT take part as a member of our community theater? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. I also acted in plays while in college. As a matter of fact, I had roles in productions in my major area in each of my four years. My favorite was Curt Götz' "Der Lampenschirm", in which I played a character named Janeck Erfurt.

Memorizing the dialogs to act in plays like "Der Lampenschirm" helped me master which language, which then became my major area of study?
Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. So what have I spent over 40 years doing in my small town? I have been a high school teacher and coach. What is another term that would refer to me in my career choice? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. For two years I did not live where I live now, but taught in another state. I taught for two years in Fairbanks, but in the summer in between I umpired in the men's state slow pitch softball tournament in Anchorage. And returning home, the wife and I camped overnight at the foot of Mount Denali. In which state was I lucky to spend those two years? Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. My wife and I now have four grown sons. In high school, their participation in sports was as individual as their personalities. Three were diamondmen, two were grapplers, two were gridders, while one was a cinderman, one a cager, and one a linkster. From this list, can you pick out one high school sport that NONE of them participated in? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. My first work experience, beginning while still in high school, was in construction, my father's occupation. In the six summers I worked before my first teaching position, I belonged to a local common laborer and hod carrier union. Which of the following acronyms was that union a part of? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. One more acronym question. I was an assistant wrestling coach for 18 years and, as such, was required to drive the team bus to or from Saturday tournaments (the head coach and I shared the duty). But to do so in my state, I needed a particular certification. Which was it? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: 2013

Jackson Browne and I were both born in 1948. I'm about six weeks his senior, as his birth date is October 9. I actually did retire in 2013, but that same year Browne performed in a benefit concert in Oklahoma along with the Kings of Leon and the Flaming Lips, and in 2014 he released an album named "Standing in the Breach", so I'm sure he did not retire when I did.
2. I was born in Fort Dodge, but grew up and graduated from high school in Waterloo. I got my degree in Cedar Falls and I've lived over 40 years in Odebolt while ending my career path in Ida Grove. Can you guess what state all these place are, where I've lived my life?

Answer: Iowa

My most famous high school classmate is Dan Gable. If you're from Iowa, you may recognize the name. I do not think there is another town named Odebolt in the world. Two other unique Iowa town names are Rembrandt and Primghar.
3. One of my favorite activities is officiating high school sports. I have served as a line judge for over 35 years. Of the following sports, which pair has officials designated specifically as line judges?

Answer: American football and volleyball

Other football positions I have worked are referee, umpire, and back judge. I've never done the head linesman position, partly because I can't see straight. People often refer to the entire crew of football officials as referees, but only one is correctly called a referee. College crews also include a side judge (which I've also done) and a field judge.

In most high school matches in my state, volleyball line judges are not required to be certified.

Answer: As You Like It

"As You Like It" is Shakespeare, of course. We never put on any of the bard's plays. Teddy Brewster is a role in "Arsenic and Old Lace", a play about a couple of spinsters who knock off old gentlemen. Charles Webb is a role in "Our Town", which was my favorite play to have acted in. Bill Starbuck is the title character in "The Rainmaker."

Answer: German

Subtitled "Kein Stück in drei Akten" ("Not a Play in Three Acts"), "Der Lampenschirm" is a play about a wager to write a play in which nothing happens, sort of like the more modern American TV comedy, "Seinfeld." "Der Lampenschirm" means lamp shade. It was written in 1911 by Curt Götz (Goetz).
6. So what have I spent over 40 years doing in my small town? I have been a high school teacher and coach. What is another term that would refer to me in my career choice?

Answer: pedagogue

Today the term "pedagogue" is usually interpreted to be a teacher who is, as one definition puts it, "pedantic, dogmatic, and formal." But my favorite use of the term is in the sentence, "Every pedagogue worth his salt knows our job is to teach how to think, not what to think." These examples are from the 2015 Random House dictionary.

A podiatrist is a foot doctor, a pugilist is a boxer, and a pediatrician is a children's doctor.

Answer: Alaska

The highest peak in North America, Denali is also known as Mount McKinley. It actually has a double peak, the higher of which, also the more southern, is at 20,321 feet (6,194 meters), while the lower is at 19,470 feet (5,934 meters). In 2012 the U.S. Geological Survey remeasured the southern peak and now lists Denali's height in its National Elevation Dataset at 20,237 feet, or a loss of 83 feet, due to its "more accurate" measurement. You will find both the mountain's name and its height listed differently in different websites.

Answer: volleyball

A "cinderman" would be a track and field athlete, a "grappler" is a wrestler, and a "linkster" plays golf. In Iowa in the '90s, when my sons were in high school, there were no volleyball programs for boys, which is probably why none of them went out for that particular sport. And yet, one of the four boys did not participate in any sport program at all!
9. My first work experience, beginning while still in high school, was in construction, my father's occupation. In the six summers I worked before my first teaching position, I belonged to a local common laborer and hod carrier union. Which of the following acronyms was that union a part of?

Answer: AFL-CIO

The American Federation of Labor merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations in 1955. During my pre-teaching work career I was a member of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA). The three incorrect answers were not labor organizations. LS/MFT was the advertising slogan of Lucky Strike cigarettes, meaning "Lucky Strike means fine tobacco." I'm not a smoker, but I remember the slogan from TV commercials when I was young. I was also at one time a member of AATG, or the American Association of Teachers of German. OABCIG is the high school where I spent the last four years of my career. Located in Ida Grove, Iowa, it is the whole grade sharing program of Odebolt-Arthur and Battle Creek-Ida Grove.
10. One more acronym question. I was an assistant wrestling coach for 18 years and, as such, was required to drive the team bus to or from Saturday tournaments (the head coach and I shared the duty). But to do so in my state, I needed a particular certification. Which was it?

Answer: CDL

The CDL was a Commercial Drivers License, which was simply additional certification on my personal drivers license. AAA, or "Triple A", is the American Automobile Association, which is self-described as "Motor club and leisure travel organization serving North America." As such it is a wonderful organization to belong to if a person ever needs automotive help while traveling, but it would not enable me to drive a school bus in Iowa.

The NFL is the National Football League, and the CBC is the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation or a Complete Blood Count.
