Jefferson Davis shot William Nelson inside the Galt House which was being used as a base of operations. Davis shot Nelson because he felt Nelson had disrespected him by slapping his face after Davis flicked a wad of paper at him. Nelson died of his wounds and after two weeks of investigation, Jefferson Davis was released without charge.

The Bloody Angle was the site of the heaviest fighting of the day at Spotsylvania, Virginia. The battle took place between May 8-12,1864. Known as the Old White Hotel during the Civil War, the hotel is now known as the Greenbrier.

The battle between theVirginia (formerly the Merrimack) and the Monitor was considered the first duel between 'ironclads'. The battle between the Confederate and the Union ships changed the course of history when it came to naval warfare. No one on the ship had extensive training in naval vessels and both ships lost firepower due to ineffective shooting.

The Virginia returned to port where it was destroyed by its crew and the Monitor sank during a storm in 1862.
