Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After the Battle of Manasses, the brigade went into camp near the battlefield for a week. What circumstances required them to move to a new location?

Answer: Sanitary conditions

The sanitary conditions in the camp were getting bad. The only stream that flowed through the camp area drained from the battlefield and carried with it the results of battle. The members of the brigade had termed the camp "Camp Maggot." The men were forced to move on when typhoid fever became rampant in the camp.
2. General Jackson did not allow his men to have camp fires during the night, thus forcing them to endure the fall and winter elements without this basic comfort.

Answer: True

In the fall of 1861 many of Jackson's men were without tents as well and forced to sleep on the ground in the elements without any protection from the wind, rain or snow. Camp fires were strictly forbidden. The men that had tents were made to sleep with the door flaps open to deploy faster in the event of an alarm.
3. Which regiment in the brigade provided a band for the "Stonewall Brigade?"

Answer: 5th Regiment

The 5th regiment provided the music for the brigade and was thus called the "Stonewall Brigade Band." The members of the band also won praise as medical assistants during battle. General Jackson also enjoyed the band and approved of their music.
4. On what date was General Jackson promoted to Major General?

Answer: October 13th, 1861

Eight days later the Confederate War Department established the Department of Northern Virginia, which included the Valley, Potomac, and Aquia Districts. Jackson was given command of the department and made his headquarters at Winchester, Virginia.
5. On November 4th, 1861, Jackson left to assume his new command. This ended his tenure as commander of the 1st Virginia Brigade. In how many major battles was Jackson in command of the "Stonewall Brigade?"

Answer: One

That's right, one battle. First Manasses was the only battle where Jackson was the commander of the brigade. With his promotion to Major General, Jackson was given a larger command. The "Stonewall Brigade" would stay near Manasses and would be commanded by a new Brigadier General.
6. Who became the new commander of the "Stonewall Brigade? after Jackson left in November 1861?

Answer: Brigadier General Richard B. Garnett

Richard B. Garnett was appointed the new commander of the "Stonewall Brigade" in December, 1861. An 1841 graduate of West Point, a Virginian, and a veteran and noted Indian Fighter, Garnett was welcomed as the brigade's new commander.
7. Where did the "Stonewall Brigade" experience their first defeat in battle?

Answer: Battle of Kernstown

Thinking he was facing only the Federal rearguard of General Shields' army, Jackson launched an attack on March 23 which resulted in the Battle of Kernstown. The Stonewall Brigade spearheaded the attack supported by Jackson's other regiments, The Virginians seemed about to turn the Union right flank. Suddenly the situation changed.

The Confederate infantrymen found themselves running out of ammunition and exposed to a explosive flank fire that continued to grow in intensity. When the remainder of Shields' troops became engaged and Garnett's men were in danger of being overwhelmed, Garnett gave orders to retire from the field.

The Federals did not pursue the Valley army very far, Shields was content that he had gained an honor that he would enjoy the remainder of his life - he defeated "Stonewall" Jackson in battle.
8. As a result of General Garnett ordering the "Stonewall Brigade" to retire from the field at Kernstown, causing the defeat, in Jackson's eyes, Jackson relieved Garnett of command.

Answer: True

Within a couple of days Jackson accused General Garnett of a long list of failures at Kernstown, removed him from command and put him under arrest. The army was stunned, and most officers openly rebelled. Jackson was uncompromising and refused to reinstate General Garnett. Garnett would return to duty and died later in the war, leading a brigade in Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, just weeks after he had been a pallbearer at Jackson's funeral.
9. Who replaced General Garnett as commander of the Stonewall Brigade?

Answer: Brigadier General Charles Sidney Winder

Upon assuming his post as head of the Stonewall Brigade, Winder told his officers that he expected the discipline within the command to improve. The fact that the Brigade was one of the most disciplined in the army did not matter. Jackson did not approve of Winder's harsh punishments of the men and the two did not get along.

However, Jackson admired the man's fighting abaility and behavior during combat. Unlike Garnett, he showed a taste for aggressive fighting.
10. Was Jackson's Valley Campaign of 1862 a success?

Answer: Yes

The Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862 lasted three months. Jackson's seventeen thousand Confederates had marched more than six hundred miles, fought four pitched battles, seven minor engagements, and daily skirmishes; had defeated four armies, captured nine pieces of artillery, ten thousand small arms, four thousand prisoners. More importantly, 60,000 Federal troops were detained in the valley.
