Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There's nothing like a warm bowl of fragrant French onion soup on a cold winter day. What usually tops a properly prepared bowl of delicious French onion soup?

Answer: Cheese

My goodness, if you don't add the piece of French bread and the layer of cheese on the top, what have you got? Just plain old onion soup, I tell you! French onion soup is very simple to prepare, and with the finishing touches added by baking the soup bowl in the oven so as to slightly brown the cheese, you have a masterpiece.
2. Mulligatawny soup is a delicious and refreshing creamy chicken concoction that comes to us from which country?

Answer: India

There are a variety of ways to prepare mulligatawny, but there's no doubt that the soup itself originates in India. I always order an ample bowl of this stuff when I dine at an Indian restaurant- I find it very soothing. By the way...the word mulligatawny comes from the southern Indian dialect Tamil, and means 'cool pepper water'!
3. The name of this delightful vegetable soup is derived from the Latin word meaning 'to serve up', and it certainly is served up in a abundance at Italian restaurants everywhere. What is the fitting name for this excellent soup dish?

Answer: Minestrone

The name minestrone comes from the Latin ministrare, to dish or serve up. Minestrone typically includes a great mixture of vegetables and herbs, and would not be the same without the berlotti beans (though pintos are also used). A little bacon or ham is optional to create the broth.
4. Typically, which of these soups would never be served cold?

Answer: Egg drop soup

Can you imagine egg drop soup cold? Well, if you're in a really cheesy restaurant it could happen, but otherwise it should be piping hot. The other soups mentioned as options are all usually served cold. Avocado soup would be awful hot; avocados turn sour if heated.
5. If you've ever been to Louisiana you were probably fortunate to have sampled a taste of the soup/stew dish known as 'gumbo'. The name Gumbo originates from an Bantu (African language) term for what vegetable?

Answer: Okra

The original Bantu term was quingombo, which was shortened to gumbo. The name came about because traditional gumbos were thickened by the inclusion of okra. These days a typical gumbo will not include okra, but will have a variety of other vegetables and meat (chicken and andouille sausage).
6. The words corresponding to 'soup' in this language include tang, jigae and guk. At what sort of restaurant would you be employing these terms?

Answer: Korean

Koreans love their soup, which probably explains why there are so many words to describe the wonderful liquid heaven in that country. One of my favorite Korean soups is Maeun-tang, but be careful if you order this stuff...it's hot and spicy!
7. For a wonderful experience, you might try the luxurious creamy French soup called billi bi. Which seafood item gives this soup its special flavor?

Answer: Mussels

Billi bi is a wonderful cream soup devised in France that is highlighted by the use of moules (mussels). I suppose that if it could be compared to anything it might be compared with oyster stew. The name billi bi is said to have been derived from William B. Leeds, an American tycoon who loved the stuff!
8. True or false: There are several famed recipes for various soups in which a fruit (or several fruits) is the main ingredient

Answer: True

Indeed, there are a number of sweet recipes that have been created to highlight fruit in soups, from cherries to melons. Naturally, these soups are sweet, but are not considered desserts. Rather, they can substitute for the normal soup course in a meal and are usually served cold. Fruit soups are popular in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.
9. From which culture do we get a wonderful lemon rice soup with a creamy chicken stock and egg base?

Answer: Greek

If you've never tried this soup, I insist that you rush to your nearest Greek restaurant and have a bowl. The soup is called avgolemono and it's simply marvelous, especially with a gyro or souvlaki plate by its side...yasou!
10. The Chinese certainly love their soups! The famed 'hot and sour' soup that you find in Chinese restaurants is always a satisfying treat. What type of mushrooms will you typically find in this flavorful liquid masterpiece?

Answer: Woodear and Shiitake

The mushrooms, and bamboo shoots, are the key to a great hot and sour soup, both providing the texture and the flavor that make this a uniquely flavored dish. Okay, now that I've tempted your stomachs with this lovely selection, get those saucepans out and cook yourself up the soup of your choice!
