Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This U word is the name of a hybrid variety of citrus fruit, a bit bigger than a grapefruit, with a green skin. It sounds as though it may be a little unattractive. (Hint: watch your spelling on this one!)

Answer: Ugli

The ugli fruit is, in common with other citrus, an excellent source of Vitamin C. It is believed to have its origins in the Caribbean, though the exact details are a little uncertain. Though the fruit is unattractive, it has a very sweet, citrus taste.
2. Help me find the 'U' word that is a temporary condition affecting the skin, commonly known as hives.

Answer: Urticaria

Urticaria can result from a mild reaction to some drugs, insect bites or foods. In especially sensitive people, the reaction to an irritant can result in anaphylaxis. It is also sometimes known as nettle rash, as the Latin word for nettle is 'urtica'.
3. This next one has two missing 'U's! I need find the word that describes a four-stringed instrument of Hawaiian origin - can you help?

Answer: Ukulele

Herbert Khaury, aka Tiny Tim, was a very famous ukulele player, best known for his falsetto rendition of "Tiptoe though the Tulips". The ukulele is a relatively modern instrument, developed as late as the 1880s, and became associated with Hawaii because King Kalākaua, who died in 1891, enjoyed the instrument so much he included it at royal concerts.
4. Which 'U' word indicates the mammary gland of a cow or other bovid?

Answer: Udder

The udder is the bag-like organ from which goats, sheep and cows (among others) feed their young.

Milk may also be collected for human consumption by either manual or mechanical manipulation of the teats. A portable milking machine is available for hobby farmers who want to collect milk from a small herd. This is then used to produce 'boutique' yoghurt or cheese. These are popular as they often have a flavour peculiar to the farm or district and appeal to those who prefer organic foods.
5. Another time 'U' is used twice - this time, I'm looking for a name that is used for an ointment or salve, that comes from a Latin word meaning 'to anoint'.

Answer: Unguent

Unguents are salves used to provide treatment for burns, bruises or other external conditions. As the etymology indicates, it is also the balm used in religious or healing rituals. The ministering of ointment (or unguent) is part of a healing ceremony is known as 'unction'.
6. Hurry! It's imperative you help me find the 'U' word quickly!

Answer: Urgent

Quotable quote: "The release of atomic energy has not created a new problem. It has merely made more urgent the necessity of solving an existing one."
Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955). The word 'urgent' conveys a sense of requiring immediate action.
7. This 'U' word is one of a kind, though it contains two 'U's.

Answer: Unique

'Unique' has been described as the most misused English word. Si Wright in an e-zine article writes: "...the only thing that makes the misuse worse is when someone describes something as 'pretty unique', 'fairly unique' or 'quite unique'. It's either unique or it's not. There's no in between."
8. I'm at a wedding, and a very nice young man asked me, "Bride or Groom?" before showing me to my seat. What 'U' word describes this polite youth?

Answer: Usher

At a wedding the usher will usually ask if you are from the Bride's side or the Groom's side of the family, and will usher you to a seat according to your answer. This tradition is thought to stem from the tradition of a groom wearing his sword on the left side, to fend off anyone trying to run off his bride to get her dowry.
9. Found in the throat, and something about which Sheldon Cooper of "Big Bang Theory" is very sensitive, is what 'U' body part?

Answer: Uvula

The word 'uvula' is derived from the Latin word for grape, referencing its shape. An elongated uvula may contribute to sleep apnoea. The uvula plays a part in the production of sounds in some languages, and may be ritually removed in some cultures.

Sheldon Cooper is conscious that people might ridicule him because of his 'oddly shaped uvula'.
10. Oops! This 'U' word pertains to a grizzly or golden creature who is chasing me because I got too close to her cubs!

Answer: Ursine

Though all bears are likely to attack if provoked or hungry, some are more likely to attack than others. Bears are omnivores, though they feed predominantly on protein-rich foods including fish, small mammals and even birds and their eggs.

Figures of fatal bear attacks indicate that while grizzly bears (usually a species of brown bear) are likely to attack, black bears are generally considered to be less dangerous.
