Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Down at the end of the bar, a young man (very young, I wonder how he got into a bar...) is trying to avoid two gregarious friends. He tells me he's from Verona and that the woman he loves has sworn to live chaste - who is the woman this young Verona man loves?

Answer: Rosaline

Rosaline is the first woman Romeo loves in "Romeo and Juliet", and his two friends Mercutio and Benvolio try to snap him out of his depression brought on by Rosaline's refusal to accept him.
2. This other guy favors center stage, right in the middle of the bar, and he's nursing his first drink while loudly lamenting his unrequited love. He's a Duke, and loves his limelight - but who is he in love with, that makes him say "if music be the food of love, play on" in his play?

Answer: Olivia

The Duke Orsino in Illyria starts "Twelfth Night" desperately in love with Olivia, a countess living in Illyria as well. He laments his unrequited passions in a speech that begins the play, with "if music be the food of love, play on," and so on.
3. There's an enchanting woman, the only one in the bar who is outshining the talkative Duke, explaining to a coterie of women that her lover has abandoned her to marry someone else! "He may still love me, but if he dares marry that Octavia, I'll make him pay," she vows as she downs a martini. Who is this ravishing royal in love with, who has married the Roman Octavia?

Answer: Mark Antony

Cleopatra has a tempestuous relationship with Antony, who often abandons her for his responsibilities in Rome. However, his loyalties do ultimately lie with Cleopatra, and therein lies the tragic heart of "Antony and Cleopatra".
4. In a corner table, a man sits drinking beer with a few soldier buddies but seems a bit lost in his thoughts. He then looks up, inspired - "What is it, Pedro?" an eager young cadet asks him. Pedro responds with, "Who cares if she turned down my proposal? She's a much better fit for - oh dear, here he is, better not say" as another swaggery gentleman sits down with them. Who is the woman Don Pedro proposed to, who he ends up setting up with the swaggerer?

Answer: Beatrice

Beatrice turns down a proposal from Don Pedro at the start of "Much Ado About Nothing", but the victorious soldier brushes off his rejection with the realization that Beatrice and Benedick are truly meant to be together. He then spends much of the play setting them up.
5. A determined young woman sits by herself at the bar, sipping her second vodka cranberry and lamenting the nobleman she has fallen for. She vows to the bartenders that despite his high station and public rejections, she, "Helena, prodigy and daughter of the genius doctor," will one day win his love. Who is the man who has spurned her?

Answer: Bertram

Bertram spurns Helena in "All's Well That Ends Well" largely because she is a commoner and he is a Count, and the idea is simply embarrassing and ridiculous for him. However, even after he leaves her following their forced marriage, she holds out hope that she can turn his affections to her.
6. A young woman, already inebriated and shoving her way through the crowd, overhears the commoner and cries out "I'm also named Helena!" She continues, "I also have a guy who hates me, he loves my best friend instead." Then she runs off to hail a bartender. Who is the man who has so shaken this second Helena, whose friend seems to be the beneficiary of the love denied her?

Answer: Demetrius

Helena from "Midsummer Night's Dream" is in love with Demetrius, but for the majority of the play, Demetrius is in love with Hermia, who is engaged to Lysander. It's a veritable cornucopia of unrequited love in Athens!
7. A rustic-looking shepherd, looking in awe at the Duke, is on his first drink as well as he laments his unrequited love. He says that "my woman thinks I'm not good enough for her, and she's off pursuing some fancy-talking new guy instead of simple Silvius the shepherd." Who is he pining for?

Answer: Phebe

Phebe consistently rejects Silvius for the first acts of "As You Like It". They are two rustic characters who seem to have a longstanding relationship of this kind, but when "Ganymede" appears, Phebe is smitten, making Silvius even more upset.
8. An elegant woman walks into the bar and glances around. She sits down for a glass of water before she heads on home and meekly apologizes for the intrusion. "If the Duke's deputy comes in, as I hope he doesn't for he is too virtuous for such a place, tell him Mariana was here to look for him." Who is the deputy who Mariana has so little luck seeking out?

Answer: Angelo

Angelo is the evil Duke's deputy (and substitute Duke) in "Measure for Measure," and his jilted ex-fiancee is Mariana. Angelo is a villainous character and commits heinous acts, but Mariana believes in him throughout.
9. A young man is at a table with his friend, who is having some trouble honestly paying attention to the lovelorn sap. The sap is going on and on about how the love of his life married the famous Moorish general. Sure seems done and done for the idiot Roderigo, but it looks like his buddy is willing to drink on his tab for the price of listening. Who is the married woman Roderigo pines for?

Answer: Desdemona

In "Othello," Roderigo is being viciously taken advantage of by his "friend" Iago, who only listens to him to take advantage of Roderigo's money. Roderigo is sadly in love with Desdemona, a woman whose passion for Othello, the Venetian general of Moorish heritage, has led her to marry him against her father's wishes.

It is hopeless for Roderigo, but Iago keeps stoking his affections, making him think Desdemona might stray.
10. The last guy is quite the aggravating little customer, who obnoxiously proclaims that his love for Julia is quite gone, and now he must be lover to someone else - someone who disdains him and is in love with his best friend. He will pursue her forever! He is followed by a young boy who seems quite upset at the whole business and keeps asking "Proteus, can we go home?", but who is the woman who Proteus is fruitlessly pining after?

Answer: Sylvia

Proteus of "Two Gentlemen of Verona" is legendary for his love of Julia, but abandons her the instant he sees Sylvia, his friend Valentine's love. Betraying both friend and girlfriend, he pursues Sylvia to the point of violence. What a "protagonist", ladies and gentlemen.
