Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lady Juniper Mackenzie, traveling with Judy, Steve and Vince, comes upon an old roadside diner called Bill's BBQ. It turns out to be a den of 'Eaters' (people who have resorted to cannibalism), and they suddenly come under attack from more than a dozen crazed people. Do they manage to drive them off by themselves?

Answer: No

Mike Havel (Lord Bear), together with Eric and Josh, arrives in the nick of time, shooting one Eater (with a bow and arrow) just as he is about to strike Juniper down. Being armored and mounted, Havel and his brothers-in-arms quickly rout the cannibals.

Upon investigation of the diner, they discover three people being kept in the (no longer working) walk-in freezer, and they happen to be people Juniper knows - part of her coven!

Since they are going in the same direction, the two groups (and the new arrivals) decide to travel on together, for a time.
2. The small group of Bearkillers (Mike, Eric and Josh) joins the Mackenzies to form an easy alliance, sharing the road for three days. Before they part and go their separate ways, who 'hooks up' with whom?

Answer: Mike and Juniper

Despite having a burgeoning relationship with Eric's sister Signe, she and Mike still have not made a commitment to one another - nothing solid, anyway. Perhaps the explanation he gives to Eric about the tryst is just justifying his actions, but it is, technically, the truth.

Either way, Mike and Juniper enjoy each other's company for a night before Juniper and her entourage continue on their way to Corvallis, and the Bearkillers continue on towards the Larsson family home in the Willamette valley.
3. When the Mackenzies arrive at Corvallis, they learn that a Committee is the governing body of the region. From which pre-Change organization was the Committee formed?

Answer: Oregon State University

Juniper Mackenzie was in Corvallis on the night of the Change, and much of the city was on fire as she was leaving, and there was lots of rioting. After things settled down, various faculties of Oregon State University began the process of solving problems. First, the agriculture faculty, then the engineering and history departments, saw the realities of the situation and took the first steps in organization.
4. Mike Havel, Eric and Josh arrive at the Larsson family home to find it intact and occupied by the groundsmen (and their families) employed by the Larssons. What is the name of the property?

Answer: Larsdalen

With a growing mercenary group and no (current) place to call home, determining the status of Larsdalen was one of the primary goals of the Bearkillers' mission. Finding it secure and intact meant a place to make home in this uncertain world.

Mr. Zeppelt (formerly the Larsson's vintner) initially tries to warn off the 'strangers' as they approach the house, but afterwards, he and his wife return to the Bearkiller camp in Idaho with Mike and the others.
5. After returning from his mission, Lord Bear (Mike) leads his Bearkillers slowly back to the Willamette and their new home. On the way they encounter a homestead that has been destroyed, all the people and livestock killed, and the land poisoned. Who is the tyrant claiming responsibility for this heinous act?

Answer: Duke Iron Rod

Apart from the thoroughness and utter depravity of his assault on the homestead, all that is known of Duke Iron Rod is from the note that he leaves pinned to the door: "FOR REBELLION AGAINST DUKE IRON ROD" written above a logo of a winged skull (human) with long fangs.

They also find a man nailed to the door of the barn with "Bow to the Iron Rod" written above his head in blood (along with a picture of a phallus).

What they will soon find out is that the former biker named Dave Mondarian has accepted the 'Duke' title from the Lord Protector (of the Portland Protective Association). He has taken over a Benedictine abbey (St. Hilda's) located on a butte in Idaho as his fortress, fortifying it against threats.
6. What town near the Mackenzie Clan lands is attacked and occupied by Portland Protectorate Association troops?

Answer: Sutterdown

Sutterdown is a fictional village that occupies the same space in the Emberverse as Brownsville does in the real world.

The people of Sutterdown had been reluctant neighbours to Clan Mackenzie, feeling uneasy about their adherence to the Wiccan religion. However, they had cooperated in fighting off threats to their region. All of a sudden, though, Sutterdown finds themselves evicted from their homes by the trained armsmen of the P.P.A. With nowhere else to go, they humble themselves and come to the Mackenzies for help.
7. Together with their neighbours, the Mackenzies launch a counterattack at the P.P.A. soldiers. What is the key weapon that the Mackenzies use that overwhelms the enemy?

Answer: Longbows

One of the Mackenzies, Sam Aylward, is a retired member of the British S.A.S. He was found trapped in a ravine in the woods above Juniper's lands (he was on vacation hiking in the backwoods when the Change occurred). One of the skills he brought with him was a knowledge of archery and bowmaking in the British style.

Months of training with handcrafted bows had turned the Mackenzies into a formidable force. The P.P.A. soldiers were drawn into an ambush by the Sutterdown militia, who had feinted an attack on Sutterdown in an 'attempt' to take back their home. In the space of a few short minutes, they fired nearly 2,000 arrows at the enemy. After that, it only took a token effort to finish the job.
8. Lord Bear takes his A-listers to wipe out a Devil Dog raiding party, but while they are doing that, Iron Rod launches a sneak attack on their camp. Who is the traitor among the Bearkillers that made this possible?

Answer: Billy Waters

Billy Waters and his family were rescued from wandering the countryside by the Bearkillers and joined the group. He brought with him the skill of a bowyer, but also the problem of being a drunk and abusive to his wife and kids. Needing the man's skillset, Mike takes him in with a warning about what would happen if he ever hit his wife.

After one incident, Billy gets thrashed for his infraction. This leads to his being a prime recruit for a smooth-talking agent of Iron Rod's.

The attack on the Bearkiller camp is a success until Lord Bear and the A-listers get back and get control of things. The Bearkillers suffer a number of casualties, but Duke Iron Rod is captured and his men routed or killed.

With the victory, the local sheriff (Woburn) is able to take over Iron Rod's fortress at St. Hilda's and make it his own fortified headquarters, but not before administering some justice, hanging Iron Rod from the tower.
9. With the threat from the P.P.A. more than obvious, the Bearkillers and the Mackenzies join forces to attack a motte and bailey being constructed at a strategic location. What other group joins them in the assault?

Answer: The Central Oregon Ranchers' Association

Apart from the University-led Corvallis City State, the Central Oregon Ranchers' Association (C.O.R.A.) is the only other group of any significance in the Willamette. Despite being the closest group to the Protectorate, their disorganized leadership made it difficult for Juniper and Mike to get the necessary commitments from them for an effective fight against their common enemy.

The attack is successful through the unorthodox mixture of ancient and modern tactics. In addition to their small arms (swords, bows, etc.), Ken Larsson also brings a trebuchet to batter the walls. In addition, Mike and a select group of A-listers utilize hang gliders to get men behind the walls.
10. "Dies the Fire" is capped off with two happy events. Mike Havel and Signe Larsson announce their engagement, and Lady Juniper gives birth to a son, whom she names Rudi. At Rudi's wiccaning, what Craft name is bestowed upon him?

Answer: Artos

Rudi is Mike Havel's son, a result of their one night together when he and Juniper met in their travels. Juniper induces Rudi's birth so that he comes nearly a month early, though, so that she can claim that he is actually her former husband Rudy's.

A Craft name is a secondary, or magical name in Wicca. When presented to the Lord and Lady, suddenly Juniper gives this pronouncement:

"Sad Winter's child, in this leafless shaw-
Yet be Son, and Lover, and Horned Lord!
Guardian of My sacred Wood, and Law-
His people's strength - and the Lady's sword!"

Rudi becomes the focal character in the "Emberverse II" series, which takes place approximately 20 years after the events of "Dies the Fire".
