Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Yes, the newspapers were right: snow was general all over Ireland. It was falling on every part of the dark central plain, on the treeless hills, falling softly upon the Bog of Allen and, farther westward, softly falling into the dark mutinous Shannon waves. It was falling, too, upon every part of the lonely churchyard on the hill where Michael Furey lay buried."

Answer: James Joyce

This is an excerpt from his fairly long short story, "The Dead". It is part of the last paragraph, just after Gabriel has the realization that he had never thought of his wife as anything but "his wife".
2. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."

Answer: Charles Dickens

This is the opening line from Charles Dickens's famous work, "A Tale of Two Cities".
3. "How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?"

Answer: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Arthur Conan Doyle, for those that don't know, is the creator of the famous Sherlock Holmes. This is a line from his work, "The Sign of Four".
4. "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others."

Answer: Eric Blair

You may remember this line from "Animal Farm". George Orwell is the name that is printed on the book, but his real name was Eric Blair.
5. "He turned out the light and went into Jem's room. He would be there all night, and he would be there when Jem waked up in the morning."

Answer: Nelle H. Lee

This is the last line from the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". Again, the author used a pen name, Harper Lee. Harper was actually Nelle Lee's middle name. Her mother's maiden name was Finch, which may sound familiar to those who are familiar with her work.
6. "Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts."

Answer: William Shakespeare

This is a line from Shakespeare's play "King Henry VI".
7. "In pace requiescat!"

Answer: Edgar Allan Poe

This is the denouement of the short story "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe. Montresor, the narrator, describes the perfect crime, his revenge on Fortunato, his old friend, who insulted Montresor's family name. The line means "May he rest in peace".
8. "*** JM IRT 0700 WR BTOYA"

Answer: Michael Crichton

This is part of Michael Crichton's novel "Airframe", about the investigation of an aviation accident. It is a message that appears on Casey's beeper. The three stars mean that it is an important meeting. JM IRT means that John Marder (JM), a person who runs a factory, is calling a meeting of the Incident Review Team (IRT). 0700, quite obviously, means "0700 hours," or 7:00 AM. WR stands for War Room, where the meeting is to be held, and BTOYA is a slang for a mandatory meeting.

It stands for "Be There Or It's Your..."
9. "To avoid arousing unnecessary talk, he took from the table the writing in which the millions were renounced, and when he got home locked it up in the fireproof safe."

Answer: Anton Chekhov

This is an excerpt from the short story "The Bet" by Anton Chekhov. A young man makes a bet with a banker that he can stay in solitary confinement for 15 years, only being provided with books, a musical instrument, food, and water.
10. "Perhaps the high water mark of my childhood was the night the bed fell on my father."

Answer: James Thurber

This is the first line of the short story "The Night the Bed Fell" by James Thurber, an American writer and humorist. He describes a night from his childhood, when his father slept in an old, not-so-sturdy bed, and everyone and everything in the house goes wild when a loud noise, thought to be the bed falling on James's father, is heard upstairs.
