Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What tragic event in Jed's past made him quit his job?

Answer: His sister was killed

Jed was on the trail of a powerful drug dealer named Speck. Before Jed caught him, he managed to set up a murder. Elaine, Jed's sister, was killed in a car bomb that Jed himself witnessed. He blamed himself for her death.
2. What did Jed fix in Dora's house?

Answer: A banister

Because Jed didn't have a job, Dora offered him some jobs in her store. After Jed pointed out that her banister was very weak, he fixed it and made it stronger. But when DiCarlo invaded the house and shop, the two men accidentally shattered it in their struggle.
3. What position did Jed once have as a cop?

Answer: Captain

He was once the captain of his police force. After he realized he could not control his emotions, he resigned from the force. The man who took his place was lazy and greatly disliked. Near the end of the story, Jed returned to his position.
4. What did Dora accuse Andrew of being?

Answer: A momma's boy

Andrew Dawd was Dora's accountant and took her out on a date. He wouldn't stop talking about his mother and Dora realized the date was a mistake. After refusing his advances, Dora met his mother at a party and was called several vicious names.
5. What happened at the Winter Ball?

Answer: Dora threw her plate of food on a rude guest

Andrew's mother insulted Dora at the elegant affair. In retaliation, Dora tossed her plate of food right over her head, soaking it in salmon mousse. Jed hauled her away, even as he secretly commended her boldness.
6. What did Finley do with his Christmas present?

Answer: He destroyed it

Finley loved to collect an array of treasures. One of his many companions gave him a small ivory statue as a gift. At first he loved it, but when she explained that she had one more just like it, he crushed it in his hands. Then he told her that when she got that other piece for him, it would finally be one of a kind.
7. What was DiCarlo's fate?

Answer: Finley shot him to death

DiCarlo was placed in charge of finding Finley's missing merchandise. He committed several murders just to obtain a handful of valuable trinkets. He failed to find Dora's painting and was shot to death by Finley. Whitesap, another Finley employee, disposed of the body.
8. Several pieces of Finley's stolen art went missing. What item fell into Dora's hands?

Answer: A painting

Dora purchased the picture at an auction and decided to keep it for herself, for the time being. She eventually loaned it to her mother, who considered giving it to her husband. It was because of her painting that DiCarlo and Finley were after her.
9. Dora's item was very valuable.

Answer: True

The abstract painting was vivid and too busy. It was signed by "Billingsly," an artist that Dora had never heard of. When she realized the painting was more than it appeared to be, she and Jed were able to remove the paint. To Dora's shock, a rare, beautiful Monet painting was revealed.
10. How many times did Jed say "I love you" to Dora?

Answer: Once

After his sister's death, Jed became emotionally drained and struggled to express his feelings. Dora blurted out that she loved him, and he was unable to respond. Dora was attacked by Finley and almost died; Jed was forced to accept how much she meant to him. Finally, in the end, he told her that he loved her.
