Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Shuya Nanahara's nickname?

Answer: Wild Seven

Shuya was known as Wild Seven to his friends, which was also the name of a brand of cigarettes. He gained the nickname while playing basketball, from a combination of his team number and the kanji characters in his name (nana).
2. Where was Noriko Nakagawa shot whilst she was in the classroom?

Answer: Right Leg

In both the novel and the manga, Noriko is shot in the leg, but in the film version, she is shot in her left arm. She becomes ill with a fever as the game goes on, and Shogo Kawada is concerned she has blood poisoning, but luckily she doesn't. It's strange that the student who was injured before the game even began was one of the survivors.
3. What did Noriko want to be when she grew up?

Answer: Teacher

Despite the state of the education system, Noriko says she had always wanted to be a teacher. Inspired by the good teachers like Mr Hayashida, Noriko wanted to be able to make a difference to the lives of young people.
4. Shuya had a crush on Kazumi Shintani, an older student who played in the same music club as he did. Which instrument did she play?

Answer: Saxophone

Kazumi was a year above Shuya's class, and she played saxophone in the same club as Shuya played guitar. Prior to the program, Shuya thought he was in love with Kazumi, but as he got closer to Noriko, he started to realise he had feelings for her too.
5. How old was Shuya when his parents were killed?

Answer: 5

Shuya's parents died in a car crash when he was five years old, which is why he lived at the orphanage. This is different in both the film and the manga. The manga has Shuya's father being dead before the story begins, and his mother dying from an illness in hospital while Shuya is small.

In the film, his mother left, and his father killed himself on Shuya's first day in grade 7 - meaning that he'd only lived in the orphanage for a couple of years.
6. Which sports team did Noriko play on?

Answer: She didn't play sports

Noriko was one of the few people in the class who were not members of a sports team. Noriko didn't really have a fixed group of friends either, but felt at home with most of the girls in the class, with the exception of Mitsuko Souma, Yoshimi Yahagi, and Hirono Shimizu.
7. How many weapons which belonged to other students did Shuya take during the game?

Answer: 4

Shuya took weapons from Kyoichi Motobuchi, Satomi Noda, Yukie Utsumi, and Yuka Nakagawa, after their deaths. Shuya was given Kyoichi's weapon by Shogo Kawada, after their fight. He took the weapons from the three girls after discovering the massacre in the lighthouse - he knew he needed to protect Noriko, but he also knew he was injured, so he took weapons with him.
8. Who shot Noriko in the classroom?

Answer: Tahara

Again, this is different from the film version, where Kitano (the Kinpatsu Sakamochi character) shoots Noriko. In the novel version, Noriko runs to help Yoshitoki Kuninobu after he is shot, and one of the soldiers, Tahara, shoots her in the leg.
9. Which of the following comments about Shuya is incorrect?

Answer: His weight was 62kg

Shuya actually weighed 58kg. We get a large amount of information about Shuya while Yumiko Kusaka and Yukiko Kitano are discussing the boys they have crushes on. Yumiko pulls out her "mental file" on Shuya, and lists the following information: "He was 171cm tall, and weighed 58kg.

His eyesight was 1.2 in his right eye and 1.5 in his left eye, and his blood type was B. He was born in the autumn, as was reflected by the Kanji symbols in his name. His strongest school subjects were Humanities, Literature, and English."
10. Which weapon is Noriko provided with in her day pack?

Answer: Boomerang

Noriko receives a boomerang as her weapon, while Shuya receives the army knife with sheath. In the film version, Noriko receives binoculars and Shuya receives a pot lid - probably to emphasise that they were "good guys" - they couldn't attack anyone even if they wanted to with their weapons.

While Shuya does get a chance to use his knife, during the confused fight with Tatsumichi Oki, Noriko never uses her boomerang.
