Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bond movies are a popular source of bad dudes. Who played the crazed terrorist Renard in 'The World is Not Enough' (1999)?

Answer: Robert Carlyle

Scotsman Carlyle played the man with a bullet in his brain. Although, in the spirit of this quiz, he turns out not to be the baddest of them all (I'll say no more ;)). Coltrane reprised his role in 'Goldeneye'(1995) as Russian casino owner Valentin Zukovsky. Bean played Bond's partner turned evil, 006, in 'Goldeneye', and Pryce played media mogul Elliot Carver in 'Tomorrow Never Dies'(1997).
2. Both of the lead characters in 'Changing Lanes' (2002) take turns at being good and bad guys. Who played smooth-talking lawyer Gavin Banek?

Answer: Ben Affleck

Jackson played Banek's nemesis, recovering alcoholic Doyle Gipson. This movie is a favourite of mine; the scene where Gipson runs Banek off the road is quite brilliant.
3. You gotta love comedies where the villain is just ridiculously camp. Which star of 'The West Wing' hammed it up as the slimy Eric in the 1995 Adam Sandler comedy 'Billy Madison'?

Answer: Bradley Whitford

Husband of 'Malcolm in the Middle' star Jane Kaczmarek, Whitford has the perfect look for the snivelly Eric. (Sorry Bradley, but you do.)
4. This guy wasn't necessarily bad, but he did bad things. Who played the charismatic Charles Van Doren in 'Quiz Show' (1994)?

Answer: Ralph Fiennes

Another favourite of mine. Turturro played the clever, but none too suave quiz champ Herbie Stempel, who was coerced into a scam involving Van Doren and the quiz show 'Twenty-One' in the 1950s. McDonald stars as host of 'Twenty-One', and Morrow plays Richard Goodwin, the investigator who catches on to the scheme.
5. 'Batman' movies are also good for a baddie with a past. Michelle Pfeiffer poured herself into a catsuit to play Catwoman in which Batman film?

Answer: Batman Returns

The 1992 instalment in the 'Batman' movie saga also starred Danny DeVito as the Penguin.
6. Feeling nostalgic? Remember the 1980 critically acclaimed Australian film 'Breaker Morant'? Tell me then, who played the devious Lord Kitchener?

Answer: Alan Cassell

Ball played Kitchener's aide, Colonel Hamilton; Tingwell played Court President Lt. Col. Denny and Waters played the shifty Captain Taylor in this gritty war/courtroom drama. I probably wouldn't have known much about this film if it wasn't a text in my Year 12 English course (at time of writing I am in Year 12 :))
7. Kill the bad guy, then go back to see if he was really bad or not. An interesting way to watch a movie, but it worked a treat for 'Memento' (2000). So who plays the guy who gets popped in the first scene (but is up and about for the rest of the movie), Teddy?

Answer: Joe Pantoliano

I'd better not say any more about this one. 'Memento' is an extremely good film, and although the scenes progressing in reverse chronological order is at times taxing, it is also exceedingly rewarding and enjoyable.
8. Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega, from 'Pulp Fiction' (1994) are essentially bad fellas, but they are so cool you can't help but love them (well I can't anyway). Religious Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) would always quote from the Bible just before he would unload on someone. His favourite quote was...

Answer: Ezekiel 25:17

'The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.'
9. Well, it's been fun taking a look at bad guys who may be just misunderstood souls. Now, for the last two questions, why not check out two movie villains who are just bad to the bone? First of all, which Aussie actor played the business suit-wearing baddie Agent Smith in 'The Matrix' (1999)?

Answer: Hugo Weaving

Did you know Hugo Weaving was born in Nigeria? You do now.
10. Finally, who played the malevolent concentration camp commander Amon Goeth in 'Schindler's List' (1993)?

Answer: Ralph Fiennes

A brilliant performance in the Spielberg-directed black-and-white epic. Where he was charismatic in 'Quiz Show', Fiennes is simply frightening as the hateful Goeth.
