Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who portrayed the character of Commander John Adams?

Answer: Leslie Nielsen

Although more popularly known for his roles in movies such as "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun", Leslie Nielsen played a more serious role as the commander of the rescue ship in this film. Later, in the film, Dr. Morbius chided the commander by saying that it really didn't take any brains to be the commander, just a loud voice.
2. What was the name of the planet that the crew had been assigned to investigate?

Answer: Altair IV

The crew had been assigned to investigate the fate of the members of the Bellerophon mission to Altair IV. Altair is the brightest star in the Aquila constellation.
3. What was the name of the robot featured in this film?

Answer: Robby

I was thrilled to see Robby the Robot in this movie. Robby was "tinkered together" by Dr. Morbius. Even though a bit on the clunky side, Robby demonstrated superior intelligence and interestingly enough, conformed to Asimov's 'laws of robotics.' Upon arrival to greet the crew, Robby said that, "If you do not speak English, I am at your disposal with 187 other languages along with their various dialects and subtongues."
4. What was the name of the original inhabitants of the planet?

Answer: Krell

The Krell were a highly, technologically advanced society, unfortunately having engineered their own doom more than 2000 centuries ago.
5. What was the profession of Dr. Morbius?

Answer: philologist

Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) was a doctor of philology. His expertise in languages and linguistics allowed him to decipher the writings of the Krell and thus allowed him to acquire some of their scientific knowledge.
6. Which actress played the beautiful, yet naive daughter of Dr. Morbius?

Answer: Anne Francis

Anne Francis had appeared in 16 or so films before landing her memorable role in "Forbidden Planet." Altaira had never seen any other people except for her father, until the arrival of Commander Adam's expedition.
7. Had the Krell civilization ever visited Earth?

Answer: Yes

Commander Adams and Lt. Ostrow had been discovered skulking around in the laboratory of Dr. Morbius, looking for an answer about the sabotage of their Klystron monitor. Dr. Morbius decided to share information about the Krell civilization with them. "Long before the dawn of man's history, they had walked our Earth." Throughout the film, we can see that some animals had been brought back to Altair IV by the Krell, like the tiger, birds and deer.
8. In a hilarious scene, James Dirocco, the ship's cook, (Earl Holliman) wanted to know if the robot could get him some of the "real stuff". What did he want?

Answer: bourbon

The ship's cook wanted to know where he could get some bourbon. He had a bottle, apparently his last, that he gave to Robby. After taking a big gulp, the cook gave the bottle to Robby, who poured the remainder of the bottle into his analyzer. The cook, mortified to see the last of his liquor drain into Robby's analyzer, exclaimed, "You low-living contraption! I oughta take a can opener to you!" Nevertheless, later in the film, Robby, as promised, produced 480 pints (60 gallons) of "genuine Kansas City bourbon," for the cook.

Naturally, the cook was eternally grateful. "Any time you're hard up for lube oil, let me know."
9. What happened to Dr. Ostrow when he used the "plastic educator"?

Answer: He died from the effect.

Unfortunately, Doctor Ostrow, while temporarily able to significantly enhance his I.Q., even beyond that reached by Dr. Morbius, succumbed to the same fate as the Bellerophon captain. However, with his dying words, he revealed the secret of the Krell's demise as well as the secret of the monster that had been creating havoc. "Monsters from the id."
10. What ultimately happened to Dr. Morbius?

Answer: He perished in the destruction of Altair IV.

In the final dramatic scene, Dr. Morbius reluctantly acknowledged that he was, in fact, the source of the monster that destroyed their original expedition. In order to prevent the potentially deadly technology of the Krell from reaching Earth, Dr. Morbius told Commander Adams how to initiate the Krell self-destruct device. We saw Robby at the controls, Altaira embracing the commander, and the destruction of the planet, from the viewscreen of the ship, as it began its journey back to Earth.
