Short and Snappy Movie Quotes Trivia Quiz

These are one-line quotations from a mixture of movies from the 1960s to 2006, all favourites of mine. I've played many movie quote quizzes on FT and I hope I'm not repeating any.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "My boys! My boys! I've lost my boys!"

Answer: The Lion in Winter

Said by Henry II of England (Peter O'Toole) after he realizes his sons are ready, willing and able to betray him for the sake of his throne. He then gets very angry and decides to annul his marriage to his queen, Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn), and marry young Princess Alais (Jane Merrow) and beget more sons.

This film saw the screen debuts of Anthony Hopkins as Prince Richard, and Timothy Dalton as the young King of France, Philip. The screenplay was written by James Goldman, adapted from his own stage play; the dialogue crackles with wit and spite and the acting is superb. Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Steisand tied for Best Actress at the Academy Awards of 1969.
2. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "I am not left-handed!"

Answer: The Princess Bride

This is said by Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) during his amazing swordfight with Westley (Cary Elwes) at the top of the Cliffs of Insanity. A few moments later, Westley declares, "I'm not left-handed, either!" This is one of the best episodes of swordplay in film. It compares well with the duel between Stewart Granger and James Mason in the 1952 version of "The Prisoner of Zenda" and the hilarious duel between Danny Kaye and Basil Rathbone in 1955's "The Court Jester".
3. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "Because of the way you are looking at me now!"

Answer: Braveheart

This is said by Princess Isabelle (Sophie Marceau) when Wallace (Mel Gibson) questions her about why she had been helping the Scots in their bid for freedom. Of course, Isabelle and Wallace never did meet in real life, but a little romance was needed in this bloodbath of a movie.

Historically, when Isabelle later became Queen of England she was known as the She-Wolf of France and was thought to be implicated, along with her lover, Roger Mortimer, in the brutal murder of her husband, Edward II. After an adventurous, and adulterous, time as regent for her son, Edward III, Isabelle spent the remainder of her life in comfortable retirement, on good terms with her son. Before her death in August, 1358, Isabelle took the habit of the Poor Clares and her body was buried at the Franciscan church at Newgate, London.
4. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "Listen to me! If we break quarantine we could all die!"

Answer: Alien

This is said by Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) when the investigating team return to The Nostromo with Kane (John Hurt) who is now the host of a very nasty little alien beastie. Ripley was right; they never should have let Kane back into the ship, but then we wouldn't have had a crackerjack of a horror/sci-fi movie. Ridley Scott directed "Alien" and James Cameron directed the equally good sequel, "Aliens". "Alien 3" and "Alien Resurrection" followed, but did not receive the same critical kudos as the first two films.
5. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "Move over, cabbage!"

Answer: The Queen

This is said by Prince Philip (James Cromwell) to the Queen (Helen Mirren) in a scene when they have just heard of Princess Diana's death. The Queen has returned to bed, pondering the news, and her husband prepares to get in beside her and tells her to move over. Apparently "cabbage" is an actual term of endearment used by Prince Philip for his wife. When the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Helen Mirren's performance evoked a five-minute standing ovation.
6. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "Never rode shotgun on a hearse before."

Answer: The Magnificent Seven

This is said by Vin (Steve McQueen) to Chris (Yul Brynner) as they take on the job of driving a hearse up Boot Hill, carrying the body of someone no-one wanted buried. Star egos caused a fair bit of tension during the filming of this 1960 movie, particularly between Yul Brynner, who was shorter in height and a less expert horseman than Steve McQueen. Elmer Bernstein's score is immediately recognizable, even now, by those of us happily familiar with the film.
7. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "Your body's dying. Pay no attention."

Answer: Interview with the Vampire

This is said by the vampire Lestat (Tom Cruise) after he has given The Dark Gift to Louis (Brad Pitt), who is in agony, turning into a vampire. The quote characterizes Lestat's devil-may-care attitude. Author Ann Rice was initially highly opposed to the casting of Tom Cruise as the cruel and self-serving Lestat, but once she saw him in make-up and in character, she changed her mind and sang his praises. Actress Kirsten Dunst had had a bit part in the Woody Allen film, "New York Stories" but it was at the age of 12 in "Interview with the Vampire" that she made her mark in the film industry.
8. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "Please die, my love... die, die now my darling!"

Answer: Spartacus

This is said by Virinia (Jean Simmons) to Spartacus (Kirk Douglas) who is hanging, crucified, and dying in agony after his slaves' revolt has been put down by Marcus Licinius Crassus (Laurence Olivier). This line was edited out of the film seven years following its release and the scene cut to make it look like Spartacus was already dead; it was later re-instated.

The film, literally with a cast of thousands (before armies could be digitalized), took many months to shoot. Peter Ustinov's young daughter, when asked what her father did for a living, replied, "Spartacus!" and Tony Curtis was heard at one point to ask what he could do to get out of this movie and Jean Simmons replied, "When you find out, let me know!" A flawed epic is saved by its brilliant cast.
9. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "I guess now you wish you would've fed the rest of me to the dogs."

Answer: Hannibal

This is said by Mason Verger (Gary Oldman) to Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) as Lecter is being prepared for Verger's vengeance - to be eaten, little by little, by hogs!
The much-anticipated 2001 sequel to 1991's "The Silence of the Lambs" was received well, being just as dark and bloody as its predecessor. Director Ridley Scott actually auditioned over 6,000 hogs to "act" as man-eaters; those chosen were 500 lb animals raised on a farm north of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
10. In which movie do we hear the following quote? "He was a soldier of Rome. Honour him."

Answer: Gladiator

This is said by Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) as Maximus (Russell Crowe) lies dead in the arena. He has killed the wicked Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in single combat but has been mortally wounded. He expires after passing on Marcus Aurelius's (Richard Harris) wishes for a Roman Republic.

The Internet Movie Database notes that Joaquin Phoenix was so into his character that he fainted after completing the scene in which he murders his father. We all know that liberties are often taken with history in film, but the Emperor Commodus is credited as the only Roman Emperor to actually fight as a gladiator in the arena, doing so several times.

A megalomaniac who delighted in killing animals as well as people, Commodus thought of himself as a reincarnated Hercules.

However, in 192 CE, he met his end at the hands of a wrestler named Narcissus, hired by the Senate, who strangled him, some say in his bath, others, as he was dressing. His sister, Lucilla, had earlier instigated a conspiracy to kill her brother but it failed and Lucilla was banished to Capri, where she died under questionable circumstances.
