Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1986, the highest peaking Billboard song by a one hit wonder was "Friends and Lovers" by Gloria Loring and Carl Anderson. This song peaked at number 2 on September 27th of that year. According to the chorus, what do they "know" in their hearts? "So I'll be your friend And I'll be your lover 'Cause, I know in our hearts we ____________ We don't have to be one or the other"

Answer: agree

Gloria Loring and Carl Anderson are best remembered for their acting careers and skills. Loring was married to actor Alan Thicke during the 1970s and early 1980s. She assisted in composing theme songs to popular television shows such as "Diff'rent Strokes" and "The Facts of Life". She is remembered for playing the popular "Days of Our Lives" character Liz Chandler.

Carl Anderson was also a popular actor (particularly in theatre). He was best known for his role as Judas Iscariot in the popular broadway play "Jesus Christ Superstar". He had also appeared in many films and television shows such as "The Color Purple", "Hill Street Blues", and "Days of Our Lives". As a singer, Anderson had worked with many popular musicians including Stevie Wonder, Kenny Loggins, and Edgar Winter. His greatest claim to fame as a musician, however, came with Gloria Loring when their hit song "Friends and Lovers" topped the charts. Carl Anderson, sadly passed away in 2004 after a bout with leukemia.
2. Baltimora were an Italian dance project that performed from 1985 and 1987. They were fronted by singer Jimmy McShane and many of their songs were written by Italian songwriter Maurizio Bassi. Their only chart topping song was the popular dance song "Tarzan Boy" and peaked at number 13 on the Billboard charts. What is the game being played by Tarzan Boy in the lyrics? "Jungle life I'm far away from nowhere On my own like Tarzan Boy _________________________ I play along while rushing across the forest Monkey business on a sunny afternoon"

Answer: Hide and seek

Baltimora released "Tarzan Boy" during the summer of 1985, and by March of 1986, they had peaked on the Billboard charts. Baltimora, like many other music groups, were popular in their homeland, however, on an international scale, they only achieved success with one hit. Baltimora tried to release four more singles "Chinese Restaurant", "Woody Boogie", "Key Key Karimba", and "Living In The Background", however, none of these songs gained any success outside of Europe.

In 1993, "Tarzan Boy" was re-released for the popular movie "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle III" and reached the Billboard 100. Following their re-release, Baltimora faded into music's famed "one hit wonder" category.

In 1995, McShane tragically passed away from complications associated with AIDS.
3. One of the most tragic stories to come out of the music world was that of The Force M.D.s. In 1986, their hit song "Tender Love" went to number 13 on the Billboard charts. They would have limited success in the R&B music world fading away by 1987. By the late 1990s, three members of the band would suddenly and sadly pass away. Touching the hearts of thousands of romantics, how should the chorus to their hit song be completed? "Tender love, love so tender, Pulling me close to you, __________________"

Answer: baby, I surrender

Force M.D.s probably one of the most tragic stories to hit the media during the 1990s. After succeeding as a one hit wonder band with their melodic tune "Tender Love", Force M.D.s attempted to continue their success by recording four albums between 1985-1994, however, the only album to gain any Billboard success was their 1985 album "Chillin".

In the R&B world, they had success with one song "Love Is A House", however, it did not reach the Billboard charts. By 1998, the Force M.D.s had tragically lost three original members of their band. Charles Nelson had succumbed to a heart attack in 1995, Antoine Lundy tragically died in 1998 from Lou Gehrig's disease, and DJ Dr. Rock died due to mysterious circumstances.
4. Pop duo Sly Fox had a successful hit song when their hit "Let's Go All The Way" reached number 7 on the Billboard charts in 1986. Unfortunately, their follow-up songs "Stay True" and "Don't Play With Fire" completely flopped and sold very poorly. According to the lyrics, what is happening inside the brain that makes you want to "scream and shout"? "Sitting with the thinker Just trying to work it out It's a ________________ of the brain Makes you want to scream and shout"

Answer: traffic jam

Sly Fox were a musical duo that consisted of Gary "Mudbone" Cooper and Michael Camacho. They popularized the musical rhythm "zhum zhum zinna-ninny" in their only hit song "Let's Go All The Way". Many critics thought the song was about "sexual intercourse", however, this theory immediately corrected based on the facts that none of the lyrics in the song remotely discuss the topic. "Let's Go All The Way" was covered by the band Insane Clown Posse in 2000.
5. Clarence Clemons and Jackson Browne went into the one hit wonder record books with their duet "You're A Friend Of Mine". On January 18, 1986, this song peaked at number 18 on the Billboard charts. How should the lyrics to this popular up-tempo song be completed? "________________________ Heres one thing I know All my life Youre a friend of mine"

Answer: Years may come and go

Written by popular American producer Michael Walden, "You're A Friend Of Mine" became an instant success for Clarence Clemons and Jackson Browne. This song was an upbeat and cheery song consisting of saxophone and positive lyrics. For many, the line "you can depend on me", provided great hope and positive self-esteem.
6. "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" peaked at number 12 on the Billboard charts for Boys Don't Cry in June of 1986. This bizarre song was considered to be the musical version of a "spaghetti western" movie. When listening to the lyrics, how should the description of the cowboy be completed? "Riding on the range, I've got my hat - on, I've got my boots - ___________"

Answer: dusty

Boys Don't Cry were a British band that managed just one successful hit in North America. The band consisted of five members; Brian Chatton, Nick Richards, Jeff Seopardi, Nico Ramsden, and Mark Smith. Their name came from the lyrics to the song "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc in which one of the lines goes "big boys don't cry".

The song was successful, not only at number 12 in North America, however, it was also a top ten hit in both South Africa and Australia.
7. Timbuk 3 charted at number 19 with their hit song "The Future's So Bright (I've Gotta Wear Shades)" in December 1986. Nearly two years later, it was used as the theme song for the movie "My Best Friend Is A Vampire". According to the lyrics, what subject does the song character like to study? "I study ________________ I love my classes I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses Things are going great, and they're only getting better"

Answer: nuclear science

Timbuk 3 were a 1980s husband and wife team. They were signed by I.R.S. Records where they recorded their one and only successful hit song "The Future's So Bright (I've Gotta Wear Shades). The song was played in the strange (but funny) movie "My Best Friend Is A Vampire" starring Robert Sean Leonard, Cecelia Peck, and Robert Auberjonois.

It is an odd movie in which a young man is transformed into a vampire. The boy Jeremy Capello (played by Leonard) must play the role as a good vampire and must try to not feed off of human beings.
8. As a solo artist, Oran' Juice Jones would only record one successful song. "The Rain" peaked at number 9 in November of 1986. Some lyrics by Oran' Juice Jones reference popular cereals (most commonly in his song "The Rain"). In the lyrics to "The Rain", what popular cereal should be inserted to complete the missing lyrics? "That's right, Silly rabbit, tricks are made for kids, don't you know that. You without me is like ________________ without the milk!"

Answer: corn flakes

Oran Jones was a popular R&B and soul artist during the mid-80s. As an individual, he is a one hit wonder with his song "The Rain". He signed a deal to record music with OBR Records in 1986 (being the first artist to do so). This is significant in the music world because OBR Records was a subsidiary of Def Jam Records, which has recorded many successful rap and R&B artists such as Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and Foxy Brown. Jones had further success as a duo with Alyson Williams when they recorded their song "How To Love Again".
9. Typically, elevator music is most commonly heard in shopping malls, long delays on the telephone, and while riding the elevator. Swiss band Double took elevator music to an all new level when their chart topping song "Captain Of Her Heart" was heard on the radio (before it became popular in elevators across America and the United Kingdom). According to the lyrics, what time of the day did "she" have trouble getting to sleep at? "It was way past _______________ And she still couldn't fall asleep. This night the dream was leaving She tried so hard to keep."

Answer: midnight

The band Double were a duo consisting of Kurt Maloo and Felix Haug. In their early days, they were known as the band Ping Pong, however, would eventually change their name in the early 1980s. They instantly became a fan favorite with their hit "Captain Of Her Heart".

In 1983, Double released an EP that included the releases "Nanningo" and "Rangoon Moon", however, this gained very little success. In 1985, they released their first full length album "Blue" which included their only top 40 hit. The band disbanded in 1987 after their limited success.
10. Timex Social Club (TSC) recorded their album "Vicious Rumors" in 1986. The only hit song from this album (or any other TSC album for that matter) was the song "Rumors". According to the lyrics, what rumor was spread about Tina? "Hear the one about Tina, some say _________________"

Answer: she's much too loose

Timex Social Club were best known for their old school rap style of music (which later became popularized as the genre "new jack swing"). In 1986, they released their only album "Viscious Rumors". The song "Rumors" went to number 8 on the Billboard charts in August 1986. Shortly after, the producer of Timex Social Club Jay King chose to replace them with another popular band Club Nouveau, who in 1987, released a popular cover of Bill Withers' "Lean On Me".

In 1987, TSC disbanded and went into the music industry as a one hit wonder band.
