Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For starters, tell me if the following is true: the band name, "Amaral", is the last name of lead singer and founding member, Eva.

Answer: True

Amaral consists of lead singer Eva Amaral and guitarist Juan Aguirre. The band was founded in Zaragoza in 1997. Their music is a mixture of soft rock and pop sounds with Latin and Synth influences. I am especially fond of their lyrics, which are often very poetic. You'll get to know some of those in the rest of this quiz.
2. Amaral won the MTV Europe Music Award in 2002 for their album, "Estrella de mar" ("Starfish"). Which of the following songs is NOT featured on that album?

Answer: Cómo hablar

"Cómo hablar" ("How can I speak?") is from their 2000 album, "Una pequeña parte del mundo".
Amaral are among the best-selling Spanish bands of all time. They have collaborated with a number of well-known musicians, including Moby and Peter Buck.
3. The British rock band Placebo sang a famous song called "Without You I'm Nothing". Amaral have released a song with a similar title in Spanish (but it has nothing to do with the Placebo song). What is the title of that song?

Answer: Sin ti no soy nada

"Sin ti no soy nada" was featured on the award-winning 2002 album, "Estrella de mar". The song lyrics are very poetic and poignant:
"Mi alma, mi cuerpo, mi voz no sirven de nada / Que no haría yo por ver tu mirada / Por ser como siempre los dos mientras todo cambia / Porque yo sin ti no soy nada..."
("My soul, my body, my voice are utterly useless / What I wouldn't do to look in your eyes / To be with you, as always, while everything is changing / Because without you I'm nothing...")
4. One of my favorite songs is an almost minimalistic track from Amaral's self-titled first album (1997). It features a tango-esque bassline, and an excerpt from the lyrics reads, "La libertad es una amiga traidora / Y me dejó abandonada" ("Freedom is a treacherous friend and left me all alone"). Which song is it?

Answer: Lo quiero oír de tu boca

"Lo quiero oír de tu boca" ("I want to hear it from you" [literally, "from your mouth"]) is at the very top of my Amaral playlist. It has a very distinct atmosphere about it.
5. Amaral's biggest hit to date was "El universo sobre mí". From which platinum-winning album comes this song?

Answer: Pájaros en la cabeza

The 2005 album "Pájaros en la cabeza" (literally, "Birds in the head", i.e. to have a bee in your bonnet) sold over 600,000 copies. Apart from "El universo sobre mí", it also features the singles "Días de verano", "Resurrección", and "Revolución".
6. The energetic "Subamos al cielo" is the first track on the 2000 album, "Una pequeña parte del mundo". Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the lyrics?

Answer: the black angel ("el ángel negro")

The "ángel negro" is from "Te necesito", a ballad from "Estrella de mar" and the only Spanish song I have ever sung at a karaoke bar.
"Subamos al cielo" is an uptempo song that will go well with any party you're having - drums or not.
7. Complete this lyric from the 2008 album, "Gato negro dragón rojo": "Las chicas de mi barrio llevan..."

Answer: "... el sol en la cintura"

These are the first few lines of the song: "Las chicas de mi barrio llevan el sol en la cintura / Nos hizo quemaduras aquella libertad..." ("The girls in my neighborhood wear the sun on their waists / It left burn marks on us, this freedom...")
It is probably a good thing that they are not wearing "nada más que sus pieles", because that would imply they are not wearing anything at all :)
8. "Alerta", also from the 2008 album, contains the following lyrics: "Su reino por un amigo / Que le acompañe esta noche / Que pronunciara al oido / Las sílabas de su nombre" ("Her kingdom for a friend / Who will keep her company tonight / Who will whisper into her ear / The syllables of her name"). The girl that the lyrics are talking about is addressed as what?

Answer: "niña perdida"

"Niña perdida" means "Little girl lost".
"Alerta" is a quiet song with a very distinctive guitar accompaniment and some nice counterpoint work.
9. "Moriría por vos" (from "Estrella de mar"), along with Robinson and Dorian Gray, references an American actor and movie. Which?

Answer: Nicolas Cage in "Leaving Las Vegas"

The gist of the song is to seize the moment and not think about the consequences: "Como Nicolas Cage en Leaving Las Vegas / No tengo planes más allá de esta cena / Es un misterio hasta dónde la noche nos lleva..." ("Just like Nicolas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas / I don't have any plans beyond this dinner / It's a mystery where the night will take us...")
"Vos" is a form of the second person plural that is mainly used in South American Spanish, and is probably used here to imply a different register (something like "I'd die for thee").
10. Despite the first line being, "Aún no apagues la luz / Quiero verla en tus ojos brillar" ("Don't put out the light just yet / I want to see it shining in your eyes"), the song containing those lyrics is about ending a relationship.

Answer: True

The song is, "Voy a acabar contigo" ("I'll end things with you"). It took me some time to understand that. At first I thought it meant, "I'm going to end up with you".
