Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Edgar Whisenant was once a NASA engineer. He calculated the end of the world for the specific year of 1988, and was so certain of his abilities, he said this:

Answer: "Only if the Bible is in error am I wrong"

Though many people say the Bible is infallible, only a very select few people say that they themselves are equal to it. Whisenant wrote the books "88 Reasons Why the Rapture will be in 1988" and "On Borrowed Time". After 1988, Whisenant went on to predict the Rapture in 1989, 1994, 1996, and 1997.
2. Who said "one word sums up the responsibility of being Vice President, and that one word is: to be prepared."?

Answer: Dan Quayle

Dan Quayle was famous for saying many strange things, and also his attempt to correct a grade-school child's spelling of the word "potato" (Quayle changed it to "potatoe").
Other succinct statements from Quayle include:
"Low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls",
"For NASA, space is a high priority", and
"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."
3. The extremely popular Podcast, "The Ricky Gervais Show" has depended largely on the ignorance of one of its hosts. Who is this man, often described as having a "head like a (censored) orange"?

Answer: Karl Pilkington

Karl Pilkington has been ignorant about such diverse topics as religion, literature, and anthropology. He can be seen on "An Idiot Abroad" being ignorant about world cultures.
Some of Karl's striking statements include:
"You know how they say people have six senses? There's loads more than that",
"I find that even though pigeons have wings, they walk a lot",
"If you just start talking, eventually the brain kicks in", and
"I could eat a knob at night."
4. Which organization accidentally replaced attempts at using the word "cooperation" with the name of a town in California?

Answer: United Nations

The town's name was Cupertino, and the "Cupertino Effect" is now the name for any computer editing which replaces the correct word with a completely wrong one. The United Nations' preferred spelling of "cooperation" was "co-operation", and resulted in many interesting edits, including "reinforcing multinational Cupertino" and "the South Asian Association for Regional Cupertino".
5. Who said "Success is the sole earthly judge of right and wrong"?

Answer: Adolf Hitler

So, by his own admission, Hitler was wrong. The brutal dictator of Nazi Germany took his own life in April 1945 rather than face capture and trial for his many crimes against humanity.
6. Timothy Leary, famous for advocating LSD use, said this "will collapse by 1980".

Answer: The United States

Doctor Timothy Leary was a leader of the counterculture movement of the 1960's, and fully expected the United States could not continue. Another funny quote from him is "tune in, turn on, drop out".
7. Who was it that said: "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we"?

Answer: George W. Bush

Both Presidents Bush were known for their misstatements, George Senior being characterized as having been "born with a silver foot in his mouth" by one of his political opponents. George Junior became more famous for his odd linguistics, having them dubbed "Bushisms" and having them compiled into books.
8. Finish the quote: "The police are not here to create disorder the police are here to PRESERVE..."

Answer: disorder

Said by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in 1968. Daley was well known for his mangling of the English Language, and is not to be confused with subsequent Chicago mayors of the same name.
Also from Richard Daley:
"Today, the problem is the future."
9. Which former Vice President of the United States said "I took the initiative in creating the Internet"?

Answer: Al Gore

One of the most paraphrased things Gore ever said, and one which haunted him throughout his failed campaign for the Presidency. Something about being second-in-command of the Executive Branch seems to invite misstatements.
10. Which former Vice President of the United States said: "We're going to have the best-educated American people in the world." ?

Answer: Dan Quayle

Dan Quayle is the only person who absolutely had to be awarded two questions in this quiz. Other superb statements from Quayle include:
"Quite Frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our children",
"Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things", and
"The future will be better tomorrow".
