Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start our quiz about Bible people with similar sounding names by taking a look at Hadar and Hagar. According to Genesis 25:15 in the NKJV, Hadar was a son of Ishamael. Who was Hagar, as per Genesis 16:1?

Answer: A concubine of Abraham and mother of Ishmael

Hagar was a concubine of Abraham and the mother of Ishmael. She was often at loggerheads with Abraham's wife Sarah and eventually Abraham forced her and Ishmael to leave.

Genesis 21:14 tells of Abraham taking bread and a skin of water and putting it on Hagar's shoulder and sending the two off into the wilderness of Beersheba. Ishmael is generally regarded as the father of the Arab nation.

It should be pointed out in some Bible versions, Hadar is known as Hadad. However, this quiz is based on spellings of names as they appear in the NKJV.
2. Two Old Testament kings with similar names are Hadad and Hadadezer. (Making things a tad complicated, is the fact more than one king was called Hadad and in addition to Hadadezer another king was called Ben-Hadad.) However, no king with the names Hadad, Hadadezer or Ben-Hadad ruled as a JEWISH king over Israel or Judea.

Answer: True

True. Hadad and Hadadezer were both Gentile kings of jurisdictions that were not part of Israel or Judea when the Israelites were ruled by Jewish monarchs.

Genesis 36:35 tells of Hadad becoming king of Edom, replacing Husham when he died. The verse tells of Hadad, the son of Bedad, attacking Midian "in the field of Moab." Meanwhile, 1 Kings 11:14 tells of God raising up Hadad as "an adversary against Solomon". Scripture goes on to state, "Hadad the Edomite was a descendant of the king in Edom."

Meanwhile, 1 Kings 11:23 tells of Hadadezer ruling as king of Zobah. On top of all this, 1 Kings 20:1 tells of Ben-Hadad reigning as the king of Syria.

The bottom line is that none of the men with the similar names were Jewish.
3. After the death of Sarah, Abraham took a new wife, Keturah, and she gave birth to six sons and two of them had names that are quite similar. What are their names, as per Genesis 25:2?

Answer: Medan and Midian

Genesis 25:2 tells of Keturah bearing six sons for Abraham with two of them named Medan and Midian. The four other sons, according to the verse, were Zimran, Jokshan, Ishbak, and Shuah.

Abraham, of course, was also the father of Isaac, born to him by Sarah. Isaac was the father of Jacob who had twelve sons who formed the Twelve Tribes of Israel.

For the record, the names Annas, Ananias, Clopas and Cleopas are all from the New Testament. Meanwhile, Belshazzar was a king of Babylon and Belteshazzar was the Babylonian name given to Daniel.
4. Ahimelech and Abimelech have remarkably similar names and both of them are found in the Old Testament, using the NKJV. Ahimelech was a priest in the time of David. According to Genesis 20, who was Abimelech?

Answer: The king of Gerar who temporarily added Sarah to his harem

Abimelech was the king of Gerar who temporarily added Sarah to his harem, as per Genesis 20. It's a bit of a long story, but Abraham and Sarah moved to Gerar during a famine and Abraham pretended Sarah was his sister rather than his wife. His reasoning was based on the fact Sarah was extremely beautiful and Abimelech would kill him and add her to his harem. Well, Abimelech did indeed add Sarah temporarily to his harem but he did not kill Abraham, thinking he was Sarah's brother.

Scripture goes on to tell of God appearing before Abimelech in a dream ordering him to return Sarah to Abraham. Verse 14 states Abimelech returned Sarah and also "took sheep, oxen, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham."

For details about an encounter between David and Ahimelech the priest, see 1 Samuel 21.
5. Aharhel and Aharah are two obscure Old Testament characters with names that sound remarkably similar. Surprisingly, both names, using the NKJV, are found in the Old Testament book Revelation and nowhere else in the Bible.

Answer: False

I hope you read the question carefully regarding Aharhel and Aharah, two obscure names from the Old Testament. Obviously, the correct answer is 'false' as Revelation is a New Testament book, not one from the Old Testament. What's more, the names Aharhel and Aharah are not found in Revelation, or any other book in the New Testament.

In fact, their names are found in only 1 Chronicles. For the record, 1 Chronicles 4:8 tells of Aharhel while 1 Chronicles 8:1 tells of Aharah. Scripture states Koz was the father of Aharhel and Benjamin was the father of Aharah.
6. Our next example of people with similar names are Elishah and Elisha. Elishah is an obscure character who was the son of Javin, as per Genesis 10:4. Who was Elisha?

Answer: A prophet of God in the time of Elijah

Elisha was a prophet of God who mentored under Elijah and then went on to become a major force. Scripture tells of Elisha doing everything form commanding an axhead to float on the Jordan River to raising an unnamed Shunammite boy from the dead.

Most of Elisha's exploits are documented in Chapters 2 through 9 of 2 Kings.
7. Gaddi and Gaddiel are two names quite similar. In addition to having similar names, they were both part of an endeavor in which Moses was the mastermind. What was the endeavor involving a total of twelve men, as per Numbers 13?

Answer: Join ten other men to spy out the land of Canaan

Gaddi and Gadiel were two of twelve men commissioned by Moses to spy out Canaan prior to the Israelites moving in to occupy the land. Out of the twelve spies. only Joshua and Caleb returned with a positive report. The ten other spies, including Gaddi and Gadiel, were opposed to the Israelites moving into Canaan, known as the Promised Land. The ten dissenting spies were fearful the Israelites would not be successful in military action against their adversaries. Joshua and Caleb saw things differently, stating God would lead them to victory.

Scripture goes on to tell of Gaddi and Gadiel, as well as the other dissenting spies, dying in a case of divine retribution. (See Numbers 13 and 14 for details.)
8. Two names from the New Testament that might not get mixed up as often as some of the other names in this quiz are Simon and Simeon. Simon was an alternate name for Peter, one of the original Twelve Disciples. Who was Simeon, as per Luke 2:25?

Answer: An elderly man filled with the Holy spirit who saw baby Jesus

Simeon was the elderly man who had been told by the Holy spirit he would not die until he had seen the Lord Christ. Luke 2:25-35 tells of Simeon being prompted to go to the temple where Jesus was being presented as an infant. The passage goes on to tell of Simeon taking the Infant Jesus into his arms and proclaiming: "Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles and he glory of Your people Israel."

It must be pointed out there are other men in the Old and New Testaments who are also called Simeon, including the son of Jacob and Leah. Simeon was also the name of a worker in the early church, as per Acts 13:1.
9. The names Hermes and Hermas when referring to individuals, appear only once in the New Testament. In addition to being remarkably similar, both names appear in the same verse, Romans 16:14.

Answer: True

True. The names Hermes and Hermas appear only once in the New Testament and in the same verse -- Romans 16:14. The verse is part of a passage in which Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, extends heartfelt greetings to members of the early church in Rome. The verse in the NKJV states, "Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes, and the brethren who are with them."

A common belief is Hermas and Hermes were siblings but it is impossible to confirm the information.

It must be pointed out the name Hermes also appears in Acts 14:12, but it is in reference to the Greek god of trade and commerce.
10. We'll end our quiz with two New Testament names that are easy to mix up -- Tertullus and Tertius. Acts 24:1-2 states Tertullus was a lawyer who argued against Paul when he appeared on trial before Felix. Who was Tertius, as per Romans 16:22?

Answer: A man who transcribed the book of Romans for Paul

Although Paul wrote the book of Romans, the contents were transcribed by Tertius, as per Romans 16:22. Going by Scripture, little is known about Tertius as he is mentioned in passing reference.

However, tradition holds Tertius was a bishop in Iconium and died a martyr. St. Tertius days are observed on Oct. 30 and Nov. 10 in the Catholic Church, according to Wikipedia.
