Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Scripture describes me as a mighty hunter before the LORD. Who am I?

Answer: Nimrod

According to Scripture, the father of Nimrod was Cush. Nimrod was also a grandson of Ham and a great-grandson of Noah. Genesis 10:9 describes him as "a mighty hunter before the LORD". According to Wikipedia, tradition has it that Nimrod was the leader of the group of people who built the Tower of Babel.
2. My name is common in the Old Testament as several men and women shared it. Notable among people with my name were the grandson of Solomon, the grandson of Benjamin and the son of Jeroboam. I was the daughter of Zachariah and the mother of King Hezekiah. Who am I?

Answer: Abijah

According to the on-line Biblical encyclopedia site Biblos.com, Abijah means "my father is Yahweh" or "Yahweh is father." Little is known about Abijah, the woman with a fine pedigree. She is mentioned in 2 Chronicles 29:1. The passage in the NIV Bible reads: "Hezekiah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years.

His mother's name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah." A total of six men and two women had the name Abijah in the Old Testament.
3. I was one of twelve spies sent by Moses to survey the land of Canaan and out of the group, only Joshua and I had favorable reports. Who am I?

Answer: Caleb

Yes, Caleb is the correct answer. While ten of the spies recommended not invading Canaan, Caleb and Joshua saw things differently. They recommended invading the territory and Numbers 14:38 reports they survived while the rest of the spies perished. The same verse reports Jephunneh was the father of Caleb while Nun was the father of Joshua.

It all reminds me of a riddle my 14-year-old daughter asked me the other day. It goes like this. Question: Who is the only character in the Bible, apart from Adam and Even, not to have parents? Answer: Joshua, son of 'none.'
4. I appointed a young Jewish woman as queen after I dumped Queen Vashti. What is my name in the NIV Bible?

Answer: King Xerxes

King Xerxes (whom other translations name as Ahasuerus) is the one who deposed Queen Vashti and replaced her with Esther. Vashti fell out of favor very quickly after she spurned the king's request to put on her crown and appear before a gathering of people and nobles so they could see her immense beauty. According to Esther 1:1, Xerxes ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush.

The dumping of Vashti took place during the third year of his reign, as per Esther 1:3. It would put things in motion for Esther to become queen and play a pivotal role in preventing the extermination of Jews in the immense area ruled by Xerxes. Of course, when Xerxes appointed Esther queen, he did not know she was a Jew.
5. I wrote the second-to-last book in the NIV Old Testament. Who am I?

Answer: Zechariah

Zechariah is the correct answer. The prophet wrote the second-to-last book of the Old Testament, appearing immediately before Malachi. Along with the prophets Haggai and Malachi, Zechariah ministered to the exiles returning to Jerusalem from Babylon. According to information from various Web sites, Zechariah means "Yahweh Remembers." Many Christians believe the Book of Zechariah contains a number of prophecies about the coming of Jesus Christ.
6. I was the first king of Israel. Who am I?

Answer: Saul

Saul was the first king of Israel. His reign was initially marked with military victories over other armies, but before long he would become bogged down with an insatiable desire to kill David. He ended up seeking occult advice and Scripture indicates his doom was sealed as a result.

It's interesting to note Saul didn't want the position of king in the first place. According to 1 Samuel 10:22, he was attempting to hide among some baggage before he was found and brought out by the people to be proclaimed as their king.

The story ends in 1 Samuel 31:1-13 with Saul committing suicide.
7. I was a maidservant to Leah and after she had stopped having children, Leah gave me to Jacob as a wife. Who am I?

Answer: Zilpah

Zilpah was given to Jacob as a wife and bore him two sons, Gad and Asher. Scripture records Leah's father Laban had given Zilpah to her as an aide. Little else is known about her. However, according to Wikipedia, Jewish tradition has it that Zilpah was buried in Tomb of the Matriarchs in Tiberias.
8. I was turned into a pillar of salt when I looked back after the LORD rained burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah. Who am I?

Answer: Lot's wife

The woman who was turned into a pillar of salt is Lot's wife, as per Genesis 19:1-29. However, the woman is not named in Scripture as is so often the case in the Old Testament. According to Wikipedia, a rock formation on Mount Sodom in Israel is known as Lot's Wife as it resembles a woman standing alone.
9. I was Job's wife and am quoted in Scripture as saying he should "curse God and die." Who am I?

Answer: No name is given in the Bible

No name is given for Job's wife. She appears in Job 2:9-10 and is not mentioned elsewhere in Scripture. However, Job 1:2 states Job had 10 children -- seven sons and three daughters. It is assumed he had one wife and she was the mother of all the children, but there is no clear indication.

As FunTrivia editor CellarDoor points out, Job may have been the target, but one presumes his wife didn't suffer much less: she lost all her children (or stepchildren) and all her wealth as much as her husband did, and if she loved him, his boils would have added to her suffering too.
10. I was astounded when a donkey spoke to me, as per Numbers 22:21-39. Who am I?

Answer: Balaam

Balaam is the correct answer. Scripture states that after the donkey spoke, Balaam saw an angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. Prior to the donkey speaking, Balaam had beaten the animal for disobedience as the animal refused to proceed when it saw the angel. Balaam, at the time, did not see the angel and took his anger out on the helpless donkey.
