Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many World Series did the St.Louis Browns win?

Answer: 0

The Browns began in 1902 under the management of Jimmy McAleer. The franchise began a year earlier, under the name of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Browns went to the World Series only once in their entire era from 1902 to 1953. That magic year was 1944 when they won the American League pennant.

They however, lost the World Series to the St.Louis Cardinals 4 games to 2. In 1954 they became the Baltimore Orioles.
2. What 5'5" outfielder won the Rookie of the Year award in 1958?

Answer: Albie Pearson

Pearson overcame his not-too-tallness, by becoming a Washington Senator in 1958. He played beside Eddie Yost, Rocky Bridges, and Ken Aspromonte. In 1958 with his 538 at-bats, he didn't produce any large numbers, but did give consistency across the board. He won the ROY by getting 14 first place votes, and beating out Ryne Duren of the Yankees, and Gary Bell of the Indians.
3. For two seasons during the Philadelphia Phillies franchise history, they were called which of the following?

Answer: Blue Jays

The team initially became the Phillies in 1892, and changed their name in 1943 and 1944 to the Blue Jays. After finishing 7th and 8th place respectively, the team went back to the Phillies' name in 1945. The Phillies had only won 1 World Championship or World Series during the 19th and 20th centuries. This came in 1980 when they beat the Kansas City Royals 4 games to 2.
4. Which of the following was a switch-hitter, and retired with over 500 career home runs?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mantle, nicknamed the Commerce Comet, was a switch-hitter who terrorized American League pitchers. He played his entire career with the Yankees from 1951-1968, amassing 3 season MVP Awards, and 536 home runs. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974. He died in 1995.
5. Who, set an American League record in 1926 by hitting 64 doubles in a season?

Answer: George Burns

George Burns broke Tris Speaker's record of 59, that Speaker set in 1923 while playing for the Indians. Three seasons later in 1926, Burns while also playing for the Indians hit an amazing 64. Burns played 16 seasons of baseball, retiring in 1929 with 444 career doubles.
Earl Webb broke this record five season later in 1931 with 67 doubles.
6. Which of the following teams in the 1990's, won the most American League games in a season, by winning 114?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees won big in 1998, by earning a record of 114-48 under manager Joe Torre. Amazingly enough, the New York club had only one 20-game winner in the name of David Cone who was 20-7. The Yankees went on to defeat the big underdog, San Diego Padres in the World Series 4 games to 0. The highest amount of wins Detroit could muster in the entire decade, was 85 wins in 1993.
7. Which of the following had the nickname of 'Biscuit Pants'?

Answer: Lou Gehrig

Along with the nickname of the Iron Horse, Biscuit Pants belonged to the New York Yankee Lou Gehrig. Gehrig played his entire career from 1923-1939 for the Yankees. In addition to his 493 home runs and .340 career batting average, Gehrig received 2 American League season MVP Awards, and won separately the Triple Crown in 1934.
8. Which of the following set a record for most hits in a season with 257?

Answer: George Sisler

Sisler knocked for 257 in 1920 with the Browns of St.Louis. 6 times in his amazing career, he hit 200 or more hits in a season, retiring with 2812 over 15 seasons. He also played 3 seasons with the Boston Braves of the National League. The other 3 listed, batted in less than 7 games in their entire career.
9. Who was the first pitcher in the American League to win the Rolaids Relief Award?

Answer: Bill Campbell

The Rolaids Relief Award is presented to the pitcher who played an outstanding role for pitching in relief. And the award goes to, Bill Campbell of the Minnesota Twins. Campbell won the inaugural award in 1976 by going 17-5 and obtaining 20 saves in the season.

The first National Leaguer to win, also in 1976 was Rawly Eastwick of the Reds. All other pitchers listed won the award, but more than 20 years after Campbell won the coveted crown.
10. How many players in the 20th century, have been hit by a pitch (HBP) 60 or more times in a season?

Answer: 0

While 50 times in a season is even outrageous, only one player had ever reached that plateau. Ron Hunt was hit 50 times in 1971 with the Montreal Expos. He was hit 26 times in the preceding and following years. Hunt was hit an amazing 243 times in his 12 season career. Hughie Jennings set a Major League record by being hit 51 times in 1896, while playing for the Baltimore Orioles of the National League.
