Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player in history to hit 70 home runs in a season?

Answer: Mark McGwire

McGwire hit 70 in 1998 with the St.Louis Cardinals. The following season, Mark did an encore by hitting another 65. He retired in 2001 after hitting 583 career home runs. Barry Bonds was the 2nd player to do this in 2001 with the Giants, when he hit 73 big ones.
2. I was a Boston Red Sox player for my entire career of 16 seasons. I had a tough time following the legend of Carl Yastrzemski. I led the league for triples in one season, home runs in 3 seasons, and won the American League MVP in 1978. I was an All-Star 8 times. Who am I?

Answer: Jim Rice

None of the others listed ever played for the Red Sox. Rice was overshadowed much by the legend of the great Yaz, but still strived to be his own person. 11 of his 16 seasons, he hit 20 or more home runs. In 1978, Rice beat Ron Guidry for the MVP Award. He retired in 1989 with a .298 career average.
3. What former 19 season player, managed the Colorado Rockies in their inaugural season in 1993?

Answer: Don Baylor

Baylor played for 6 teams in his career, and won the American League MVP with the Angels in 1979, by heading out Ken Singleton of the Orioles for the crown. Baylor managed the Rockies for 6 seasons until 1999, when he went to the Chicago Cubs. With the Rockies, the team never finished better than 2nd place.
4. Which of the following, pitched for 26 seasons in the Major Leagues?

Answer: Tommy John

The others listed, never pitched and only played for one season in their entire career. From 1973, John made 7 moves between teams throughout his career, until he retired at the age of 46 in 1989. John was runner-up for the Cy Young Award twice. His best season was in 1977 with the Dodgers at age 34, when he went 20-7.
5. Who won the 1994 World Series?

Answer: There was none

Arizona did not exist until 1998, and the other teams were in their 2nd year of baseball. There was no World Series in 1994, due to labor disputes.
6. What San Francisco Giant player was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame, in the Hall's 50th anniversary?

Answer: Willie McCovey

The others listed never played for the Giants. The Hall opened in 1936 with 5 great inductees. Willie McCovey entered the Hall in 1986 along Bobby Doerr and Ernie Lombardi. 'Big Mac' belted 521 home runs over 22 seasons, almost all with the Giants.
7. How many 2002 Cincinnati Reds pitchers, won more than 18 games in the season?

Answer: 0

No Red won more than 15. In fact, Jimmy Haynes who went 15-10, was the only Cincinnati pitcher to win more than 7 games. The Reds had a record of 78-84 for the season.
8. Who was the first pitcher in history to allow 500 home runs in their career?

Answer: Robin Roberts

The other listed, never pitched in their career. Roberts, the 19 season pitcher mostly with the Phillies, was the only pitcher to do this at the time of his retirement in 1966. He still managed over 2000 strikeouts. He was a 7-time All-Star, and was in the top 10 voting for the MVP, 5 times in his career.
9. I only played 10 seasons in my career. My highlight was being the first recepient of the Cy Young Award, and I won the MVP in the same season. I also won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1949. I went to 3 World Series, all against the Yankees. Who am I?

Answer: Don Newcombe

The others listed were all career Yankees, and never pitched in a game. Newcombe played mostly for the Dodgers in his career. The first Cy Young Award was given to only one outstanding pitcher in the Major League.
10. Which of the following players, struck out the least amount of times in their career?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Believe it or not, Ruth struck out 500 times less than the others listed. Reggie 'Mr.October' Jackson leads this pack, and all the Major Leagues at the time of his retirement, with 2597 strikeouts. Jackson was the only player in the 20th century to reach the 2000 mark.
