Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. October 27, 2002, saw which feat in Major League baseball occur?

Answer: The Angels won their first World Series

After joining baseball in 1961, the Angels finally tasted a World Series crown against the San Francisco Giants. The Angels won the series four games to three, with Troy Glaus being the series MVP. This was the Angels' first ever trip to the promised land.
2. Which of the following dates did the world see Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run in a season?

Answer: September 30, 1927

The other date options, Ruth was not in baseball. The Babe played from 1914-1935 with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Boston Braves. His monumental home run came off Tom Zachary of the Washington Senators. Zachary began the 1927 season as a St. Louis Brown.
3. June 2, 1941, was a memorable date in Major League baseball as what happened on this day?

Answer: Lou Gehrig died

Gehrig was a career Yankee from 1920-1939. With the help of teammate Babe Ruth, the two combined to be one of the most feared one-two punches in baseball history. Lou retired from baseball in 1939 due to his disease after only eight games in the season. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1939 also.
4. On August 10, 1944, Boston Braves' pitcher Red Barrett entered the record books for what?

Answer: Throwing only 58 pitches in a complete nine inning game

Barrett faced the Cincinnati Reds on this date in 1944. Red threw a two-hitter in a 2-0 win. A game with an indication of great control, Barrett went only 9-16 in the season for the Braves.
5. In 1964, the Athletics' Bert Campaneris started his Major League career off right. He not only hit a home run in his first career at-bat, but he did it on the first pitch. What did Campaneris do the following season in 1965?

Answer: Became the first player to play all positions in one game

Campaneris was a shortstop, but on September 8, 1965, Bert played in every position in a game, including pitcher. In his only pitching career inning, he walked two, struck out one, and allowed two hits. Campy was a six-time all-star and went to three consecutive World Series with the Athletics from 1972-1974.

The following day, Dodger-great Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game against the Cubs.
6. In August 1920, Ray Chapman became the first player in history to do what?

Answer: Die as a result of an on-field incident

Chapman of the Cleveland Indians was hit in the head by a pitch from Yankee Carl Mays. The shortstop died shortly after on August 17, 1920. The Indians rebounded to go on and win the World Series in the season.
7. What occurred on September 9, 1965?

Answer: Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game

Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers threw his fourth no-hitter in four seasons, and this one was a perfect game against the Cubs. Ironically, the Cubs' pitcher Bob Hendley had a perfect game going, but ended up with a one-hitter after a hit by Dodger Lou Johnson.
8. Which event happened on October 1, 1967?

Answer: The last batting Triple Crown of the 20th century was won

Williams retired in 1960. The Boston Red Sox clinched the American League on this day by winning the crown over the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins by one game. Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown for the Red Sox, the last player since Ted Williams won it in 1947.
9. Chicago Cubs pitcher Orvall Overall accomplished something in a World Series for the first time in history on October 14, 1908. What was it that he did?

Answer: Struck out four batters in an inning

In game five of the series against the Tigers, Overall struck out four batters in one inning (bottom of the first). His second strikeout of the inning was followed up with his catcher Johnny Kling, dropping the third strike and allowing the batter to make it to first base. Overall struck out the next two batters, making it four in the inning.

The Cubs won the series four games to one. Their next World Series win was 108 years later, in 2016.
10. On July 3, 1966, Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger accomplished an amazing feat in baseball history. What did he do?

Answer: Hit two grand slams in a game

Tony helped his own cause against the Giants on that day in July. He and the Braves downed the first place Giants 17-3. The Giants went on to finish as runner-ups in the NL to the Dodgers. The Braves finished 10 games back. Cloninger went 14-11 and hit five home runs in the season.
