Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Dario Franchitti became the ninth non-American in 11 years to win the Indianapolis 500 auto race when he won the 2010 running over Memorial Day weekend. Which country is Franchitti from?

Answer: Scotland

Although of Italian descent, Franchitti was born and raised in Scotland. His 2010 win was his second Indianapolis 500 victory, the first coming in 2007. His wife, movie star Ashley Judd, was on hand to celebrate his win with him.
2. In early June the National Hockey League's season ended with the Stanley Cup winner claiming its first championship since 1961. Which team was this?

Answer: Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks beat the Flyers in a six-game final series to win their first Stanley Cup since the days of Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull. The other choices were not in existence yet in 1961, but were added later during the expansion era. The Blackhawks (then called Black Hawks) were one of the original six teams, along with the Bruins, Red Wings, Canadiens, Rangers, and Maple Leafs.
3. Which hockey player led Canada to a gold medal in the 2010 Winter Olympics in February, and then in June won the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL finals?

Answer: Jonathan Toews

Toews (rhymes with "saves") grew up in Manitoba in a Mennonite family. He had just turned 22 when he led the Blackhawks to the 2010 Stanley Cup, just four months after he had led Canada to an exciting 3-2 overtime win against the United States in the Olympic gold medal game. The other choices were the Conn Smythe winners in the three years prior to 2010.
4. The 19th soccer World Cup started in June. Which continent was hosting its first-ever World Cup in 2010?

Answer: Africa

South Africa was the host nation, the first time an African nation had ever hosted the World Cup. The venues for the first 14 World Cups were always either Europe or Latin America. Since then the soccer ruling body, FIFA, has tried hard to branch out to include the rest of the world.

The World Cup was held in the United States for the first time in 1994, and in Asia for the first time in 2002 when Korea and Japan co-hosted. After Africa broke the ice in 2010, Oceania remained the only inhabited continent not to have hosted a World Cup.
5. American college athletic conference realignment took place in early June, with the University of Colorado announcing that it was leaving the Big 12. Which conference did Colorado jump to?

Answer: Pac-10

The roots of the Pacific-10 Conference (or Pac-10) go back to 1915 when it was formed as the Pacific Coast Conference. It became known as the Pac-8 in 1968, and then it became the Pac-10 ten years later when Arizona and Arizona State were admitted.
With the exception of a period when Montana was a member, the conference prior to 1978 had always been true to its name and included only schools in states bordering the Pacific Ocean. With the addition of Colorado, the conference gave up any pretense to geographical integrity.
6. The University of Nebraska left the Big 12 and joined another conference in early June. Which conference did Nebraska decide to join?

Answer: Big Ten

Nebraska's move to the Big Ten makes geographic sense, as it borders longtime Big Ten member Iowa.
After the defection of both Colorado and Nebraska, the Big 12 appeared to be doomed. Texas was considering defecting to the Pac-10, and it was widely believed that two other Texas schools and the two Oklahoma schools in the Big 12 would follow Texas out of the Big 12. However, Texas decided to remain, leaving the Big 12 as a viable conference.
7. In June, the Boston Celtics attempted to win their 18th National Basketball Association championship. However, they fell short in an exciting 7-game final series. Who did they lose to?

Answer: Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers were down 3-2 in the finals, but then won the last two games at home to win the title. Their star Kobe Bryant was named MVP of the finals. This win gave the Lakers their 16th NBA title, meaning that the Lakers and Celtics between them owned most of the first 64 NBA titles.
8. The U.S. Open golf championship was contested in June on a famous California golf course, the same course which was the site of Tiger Woods incredible 15-stroke win 10 years earlier. Which course is this?

Answer: Pebble Beach

Other U.S. Open winners at Pebble Beach over the years include Tom Kite in 1992, Tom Watson in 1982, and Jack Nicklaus in 1972. The other choices are the sites of other U.S. Opens. Bethpage is in New York, Oakmont is in Pennsylvania, and Pinehurst is in North Carolina.
9. Who won the 2010 U.S. Open golf championship, becoming the first native of Northern Ireland to ever win a U.S. Open?

Answer: Graeme McDowell

McDowell finished at an even-par 284, one stroke ahead of Gregory Havret of France, and two ahead of Ernie Els of South Africa. Dustin Johnson of the U.S. was the leader at the start of the last round, but he ballooned to a last-round 82. Tony Jacklin is an Englishman who was the last European before McDowell to win a U.S. Open, way back in 1970.
10. Which of these teams was eliminated in the first (group) round of the 2010 World Cup?

Answer: France

The other three choices advanced easily to the knockout phase, but the French team was plagued with controversy from the outset and performed poorly. France qualified for the World Cup only because of an uncalled handball by Thierry Henry in a match against Ireland.

Then during the group phase, the French internal squabbling became public when striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home in disgrace for insulting coach Raymond Domenech. In support of their teammate, the French team then refused to participate in a scheduled practice session.

The whole debacle ended on a sour note when France lost its last game 2-1 to South Africa, and after the loss, coach Domenech refused to shake hands with the South Africa coach.
