Answer: Miami Dolphins

On a day in which the temperature at kickoff was 39 degrees Fahrenheit at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, the Dolphins were anything but super in the first Super Bowl appearance. A 31-yard field goal by Garo Yepremian in the second quarter cut the Dallas lead to seven, but two second-half touchdowns propelled the Cowboys to a 24-3 victory.

The Royals got sweet revenge on the hated Yankees in 1980, having lost to them in the ALCS three straight years (1976-1978). Frank White, Kansas City's longtime second baseman, was named the first-ever ALCS MVP after the series was over.

By losing to the legendary Henry Iba's Aggies, the Tar Heels hold the distinction of being one of two teams to lose to the first back-to-back champions in Final Four history (the other team being NYU in 1945). By the time they made their second Final Four appearance, in 1957, North Carolina had left the Southern Conference to become a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Today, of course, Oklahoma A & M is known as Oklahoma State.

After losing to Big Ten rival Michigan in the 1953 Frozen Four, the Golden Gophers returned to the championship game the next year against the Red Hawks of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Gophers got the game into overtime, but lost 5-4. Minnesota finally broke through for a national title in 1974.

Exhibition Stadium, the site of the 50th Grey Cup contest between Hamilton and Winnipeg on December 1, 1962, was a rematch of the previous year's game, which the Blue Bombers won in overtime. Heavy fog descended on the stadium during the second quarter and got progressively worse. Things got so bad, in fact, that with less than 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the game was suspended with Winnipeg leading 28-27. Play resumed the next afternoon, but Hamilton wasn't able to do any more scoring.

Houston earned their first trip to the NBA Finals after defeating the Kansas City Kings in five games for the Western Conference title. But the veteran Celtics, led by Larry Bird and making their first Finals appearance since 1976, took advantage and gunned down the Rockets, and future Hall-of-Fame center Moses Malone, in six games.

First-year coach Barry Melrose, who is well known as a hockey commentator on television, took a team featuring Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille, Jari Kurri and Kelly Hrudey, through a gamut of Canadian powers--specifically, Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto--to earn their first Clarence Campbell Trophy.

Their impressive run, however, came to an end in the Stanley Cup Finals, as the legendary Patrick Roy earned his second Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. The Canadiens were the last hockey team from Canada to win the Stanley Cup in the 20th Century.

The Giants participated in each of the NFL's first three championship games, by virtue of having the best record in the Eastern Division. They avenged their loss to the Bears by beating them 30-13 in the 1934 championship game, then lost in 1935 to the Detroit Lions 26-7.

In one of the most memorable meltdowns in sports history, Novotna squandered a 4-1 lead in the final set against Graf, who at the time was at the peak of her game. The Duchess of Kent lent Novotna a shoulder to cry on, and reassured her that she would win at Wimbledon one day. That day came in 1998, when she defeated Nathalie Tauziat in straight sets for her only Grand Slam singles title. Novotna had more success in doubles, earning a career Grand Slam in women's doubles and four mixed doubles wins in Grand Slam events.
