Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of race is the Iditarod and where has it taken place?

Answer: Sled-dog race in Alaska

The Iditarod Trail Sled-dog Race has usually run between Anchorage and Nome in Alaska. Teams have had to cope with blizzards, sub-zero temperatures and winds which have caused temperatures to drop as low as -100°F (-73°C).

The roadrunning event in Perth is known as The City to Surf Race.
A famous long-distance ski race, in Sweden is known as the Vasalopper (meaning Vasa race).
The Yukon Quest is the name of another sled-dog race - usually run between Fairbanks in Alaska and White Horse in the Yukon.
2. If you were sitting in a gallery at the Kirkstall Lane End of Headingley Carnegie Stadium, in Leeds (England), during the month of August in 2009, which of the following sports would you have been watching?

Answer: Test cricket

The 4th Ashes series between England and Australia was played in August, 2009.

Headingley Carnegie Stadium is a sporting complex composed of two separate grounds - one for cricket and the other mainly for rugby - both of which share a main stand. On one side, opposite this main stand, is the Kirkstall Lane End where spectators enter the cricket ground. The rugby ground end name is the Football Stand End.
3. The Stadium of Light in Sunderland (England) was opened in 1997. Do you know what kind of sport is played there?

Answer: Football

The name "Stadium of Light" was chosen in order to play tribute to the mining industry which established Sunderland's prosperity. A monument, depicting a Davy miner's lamp, stands at the entrance to the stadium.
Apart from hosting football matches, the stadium has been used for music concerts with such performers as Oasis, Take That, Kings of Leon, and Coldplay.
4. George Herman Ruth was born in 1895 and died in 1948. He was one of America's greatest sportsmen. Do you know which sport he is remembered for?

Answer: Baseball

This great sportsman was also known as "Babe" Ruth and had two other nicknames - "The Bambino" and "The Sultan of Swat". He has been named as the greatest baseball player of all time. In 1993 it was reported in The Associated Press that Muhammad Ali had tied with Babe Ruth as the most recognised athlete in America.
5. An underdog made good in the film "Rocky" (1976) which was written by Sylvester Stallone. To which sport did this publicly-acclaimed film pay homage?

Answer: Boxing

In 1975 Chuck Wepner challenged Muhammed Ali for the world's Heavyweight title and managed to survive against him for longer than most people thought possible. He was knocked out in the 15th round. It has been suggested that Wepner's courage and tenacity in this fight inspired Stallone to write the script for "Rocky". Stallone very-much admired two great boxers with the same sobriquet - Rocky Marciano and Rocky Graziano.

He was, undoubtedly, also inspired by these two men when he wrote his script.
6. If you were listening to an instructor who was explaining the use of some sporting equipment to you and his explanations were peppered with the words "nock", "butt" and "fletching", which sport would you be hoping to learn?

Answer: Archery

The nock is at either end of the bow to hold the bowstring. It is also the notch at the end of the arrow which fits on to the bowstring.
When used in archery, the butt refers to the target including an obstacle behind it to stop the shot.
The fletching is on the end of the arrow. It could be made of feathers, plastic or other materials. Fletching keeps the flight of the arrow more stable.
7. What game is played on a rectangular court which is divided into thirds and which has shooting half-circles at either end? The 7 players in a team try to score goals by passing a ball down the court and shooting it up through a netted goal ring which is fastened to an upright, single post.

Answer: European netball

NBA (National Basketball Association) basketball is usually played with two teams of 5 players (unlike netball's 7 players) in each team who play on a rectangular court with a basket at each width end.
Borden ball has two types of nets - one basketball net and one football net - at each end of the rectangular court.
Volleyball is usually played by two teams of 6 players who are separated by a net across the middle of the court.
8. Which of the following sporting events usually terminates on the Champs Elysées in Paris (France)?

Answer: Tour de France cycling race

Since 1991, the starting and finishing point for the Paris-Brest cycling race has been in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines which is 22kms S.W. of Paris.
The Paris International Marathon is an annual foot race which usually begins in the Champs Elysées and finishes in the Avenue Foch.
The London Marathon - another annual foot race - doesn't, of course, cross the Channel.
9. Two people stand facing each other. Both of them are wearing full-body, protective clothing consisting of a sleeved, form-fitting jacket; a pair of short trousers which end just below the knee; high socks; flat-soled shoes and a mask which includes a bib to protect the neck. Each person is wearing only one gauntlet-glove. All of this clothing is white. Can you tell, from this description what their sport is?

Answer: Fencing

Full-body, protective clothing is necessary in only one of the above-listed sports.
In archery an arm-guard is usually worn to keep the bow string from hitting the archer's arm when the string is released. Many archers wear chest-guards to keep their clothing tight against their bodies to prevent their clothing from being caught in the bow string and also to guard their chests from injury.
In boxing, hand and wrist wraps are used to bind the bones and boxing gloves are worn over these. Padding over the ears is frequently used.
Most wrestlers wear ear and knee pads. Their shoes are light-weight, thin-soled and usually have high ankle supports.
10. During the Summer months, sportsmen from all over the world have come to play their chosen game at Cowdray Park in West Sussex (England). Do you know which sport they came to play? It is one in which members of the British royal family are known to have participated.

Answer: Polo

The Cowdray Park Polo Club was formed early in the 20th century. Later, Princess Elizabeth accompanied her husband the young Prince Philip when he played there. She presented prizes there when she became Queen. By 1952, the year of Queen Elizabeth's coronation, Cowdray Park was the main centre of British polo. Queen Elizabeth's son, Prince Charles, has also enjoyed many games there.
