Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first leg of the race, in Mexico, teams had the choice of riding a donkey or doing which of these?

Answer: Jumping out of a plane

Arriving at Aerodromo Tequesquitengo, this Detour gave teams a choice between 'Wings' and 'Wheels'. In 'Wings', teams were instructed to hop into an airplane and perform a tandem skydive with an instructor. Once both members reached the bottom, they'd receive the clue instructing them to head to the Pit Stop.

In 'Wheels', teams needed to hop onto a donkey cart at the airport and ride it down a six mile course using only a map to guide them. Once at the end, the same clue would be given. Following the Detour, teams made their way by taxi to the Hacienda San Gabriel de las Palmas. Michael and Kathy, Teri and Ian, Andre and Damon, and Andrew and Dennis completed 'Wheels' while Flo and Zach, Aaron and Arianne, Derek and Drew, Heather and Eve, Gina and Sylvia, Tramel and Talicia, and John Vito and Jill finished 'Wings'.
2. In the Detour in Leg 4 (occurring in Portugal), teams had to deliver what product?

Answer: Wine

Teams landing in Porto, Portugal were instructed to make their way to the Calem Port Lodge where they found the Detour, a choice between 'Old School' and 'New School'. In 'Old School', teams loaded a barrel of port wine onto a boat and helped transport it to a restaurant across the river. Once they brought the signature back for the delivery, they would receive another clue.

In 'New School', teams used a truck to transport three crates of wine to three different restaurants in Porto. Once these signatures were returned, they would receive the clue taking them to Lisbon. Andre and Damon, Flo and Zach, Heather and Eve, and John Vito and Jill completed 'New School' while the rest finished 'Old School'.
3. In Leg 6 in Morocco, all participating teams selected the same Detour task.

Answer: True

In this leg, teams went to the Palmerie Oasis outside Marrakesh, Morocco to complete their Detour challenge. In this Detour, teams had a choice between 'Now You See It' and 'Now You Don't'. In 'Now You See It', teams made their way on horseback to a flag visible from the cluebox. Once there, they needed to dig in a marked area for a piece of pottery containing their clue.

In 'Now You Don't', teams rode a sandbike/ATV a longer distance to a flag not visible from the cluebox. Once there, they needed to transcribe an etching reading their clue.

In both cases, the clue was in Arabic and would need to be translated for teams to advance. All participating teams (all teams in the leg except Teri and Ian who claimed the Fast Forward) completed the 'Now You Don't' task.
4. In Leg 7, how many teams completed the 'Skate' Detour task as opposed to 'Sled'?

Answer: None

In Leg 7, teams made their way through Germany and Austria. In Innsbruck, teams found the Detour task which required a choice between 'Skate' and 'Sled'. In 'Skate', teams needed to participate in a four-person relay on a speed skating rink with two Olympic athletes. None of the teams did this.

Instead, the participants (Teri and Ian, Kevin and Drew, Ken and Gerard, and John Vito and Jill) all participated in 'Sled' which required that all players take a ride down a bobsled track. At the bottom, racers would receive their next clue. Zach and Flo did not participate since they claimed the Fast Forward.

As well, Andre and Damon were too far behind to complete all of the tasks in this leg.
5. In Leg 8, teams made their way to Switzerland. What was the final result that teams needed to get upon completion of the Detour?

Answer: An opened safe

In Leg 8, teams reached the Lindenhof in Zurich, Switzerland for their Detour clue. Teams were required to choose either 'Count the Money' or 'Run the Numbers'. In 'Count the Money', teams needed to take a jar full of Swiss money and count out the entire total to get the pin number for a safe.

In 'Run the Numbers', teams needed to go around Zurich counting trees, looking at statues, and counting the numbers on a clock tower in order to find the same pin number. Once teams correctly inputted the answer, 127850, they would receive their next clue. All five teams completed the 'Run the Number' Detour task.
6. In Leg 9, how many teams completed the 'Extreme Swiss' bungee jumping Detour task?

Answer: One

Out of the four participating teams (John Vito and Jill did not participate since they claimed the Fast Forward), only Derek and Drew stepped off the edge of the Red Bridge and performed the bungee jumping 'Extreme Swiss' Detour task. Instead, the other three teams (Ken and Gerard, Teri and Ian, and Zach and Flo) completed 'Very Swiss' which involved driving to a farm and taking a key out of the bells wrapped around the necks of sheep in a pen. Once both Detour tasks were complete, participating teams were given a call on a Verizon Wireless phone at their own discretion. Teams could talk as long as they wanted, but it would eat into their race time.

After the Detour, teams raced to Veytaux, Switzerland for a Road Block.
7. In Leg 10, teams completing the 'Wet' Detour swam with which animals?

Answer: Manatees

Leg 10 took teams to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and then to Singapore where they found the Detour at the Singapore National Orchid Garden. In 'Wet', teams needed to drive to the Singapore Zoological Garden to 'swim with the mermaids'. Once teams put on a wetsuit and goggles, they would be able to hop into the manatee tank and swim across it to retrieve their clue on the other side. Teri and Ian and Derek and Drew finished this task. Teams completing 'Dry' had to head to a single apartment in a confusingly-constructed building in a convoluted building complex in the middle of several identically-named streets. Once Zach and Flo, Ken and Gerard, and John Vito and Jill arrived, they received their clue from a Singaporean TV star.

After the Detour, teams made their way to the Fountain of Wealth in downtown Singapore's Suntec City.
8. In Leg 11 in Vietnam, which of these is true about the Detour (a choice between 'Hard Sell' and 'Easy Buy')?

Answer: An equal amount of teams completed each task

Heading out from Ho Chi Minh City, teams entered a rainstorm in the Mekong Delta. At the town of Cai Be, teams found the Detour at the edge of the floating market. In 'Easy Buy', teams needed to hop into a sampan and find the only floating shop on the river to sell water chestnuts.

They would receive their clue if they bought a package of them. In 'Hard Sell', teams needed to sell 40,000 Dong-worth of fruit to locals on land. With each one normally selling for less than 1,000 Dong, the task would take a bit longer. Flo and Zach and Ken and Gerard finished 'Hard Sell' while Teri and Ian and Derek and Drew finished 'Easy Buy'.

After the Detour, teams went seventy miles back to Ho Chi Minh City.
9. In Leg 12 in Vietnam, teams needed to complete either 'Basket Boats' or what other Detour task?

Answer: Basket Bikes

In Leg 12, teams made their way to the village of Nam O in Da Nang where they found a clue at the edge of the town bridge. This Detour had a choice between 'Basket Boats' in which a team members each hopped into a round boat and needed to paddle to a clue box at a distant island and 'Basket Bikes' where teams needed to hop onto a bike adorned with tons of heavy wicker baskets to travel about one mile down the road to the clue box.

While Ken and Gerard and Teri and Ian completed 'Basket Bikes', Flo and Zach attempted both tasks before settling on the 'Basket Boats' option (though they had paid a local to paddle Flo's boat for her).
10. In Leg 13, none of the teams chose to complete the 'Slow Walk' Detour task.

Answer: True

In Leg 13, teams completed their final Detour task of the race on the island of Kauai, Hawaii at Wailua Falls. After following a marked path to the Detour, teams got to choose between 'Quick Drop', in which team members needed to take a tandem drop down a zipline into the water below (about 160 feet) and then climb up behind the waterfall to receive their clue, or 'Slow Walk', in which teams needed to take a fairly long path around to get to the same blue box beneath the waterfall. To save the time at this crucial point in the race, all three teams chose 'Quick Drop'.

After the Detour, teams flew to Seattle, Washington, the final destination city.
