Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 3, teams were instructed to fly to which of these cities?

Answer: London

Departing from the Diamante K Bungalows in Tulum, Mexico, teams were given a clue instructing them to make their way to the nearest airport (in Cancun) and fly to Heathrow International Airport in London, England. Once in London, teams needed to head to Cambridge where they could find their next route marker outside an establishment known as Scudamore's.

In order to cross the ocean and get all the way here, teams first booked a flight to Mexico City. After this, teams either went from Mexico City to Paris and then to London or to Miami and then to London.

It was complicated.
2. Once at Scudamore's in Leg 3, teams found their Detour task- a choice between 'Punt' and which of these?

Answer: Bike

Once at Scudamore's, teams were immediately thrust into completing this leg's Detour task, a choice between 'Punt' and 'Bike'. In 'Punt', teams needed to grab a small boat known as a punt and paddle it down the River Cam in order collect a clue dangling under a crossing bridge.

In 'Bike', on the other hand, teams would need to hitch a ride on a bike and ride it almost ten kilometers (five times further than the other task) through the city to claim the same clue. Teams completing 'Punt' included Derek and Drew, Ken and Gerard, Michael and Kathy, Flo and Zach, Heather and Eve, John Vito and Jill, Andre and Damon, and Teri and Ian while the only team finishing 'Bike' was Aaron and Arianne.
3. Which team claimed the Fast Forward clue in Leg 3?

Answer: Dennis and Andrew

After the Detour, teams were required to make their way through Cambridge to a bus station and catch a charter bus directly to Aberdeen, Scotland, 350 miles away. The first bus would leave at 7:30pm, the second at 10:00pm, and the third nearly eight hours after the first.
Dennis and Andrew, instead opting to get the Fast Forward, made their way to the Duxford Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire whereupon they were instructed to ride a tank around an obstacle course in a minute and a half. Upon receiving their clue, they were instructed to head directly to the Pit Stop.
4. Which of these activities was not used in the Road Block in Leg 3?

Answer: Pole Vault

Once in Aberdeen, teams we forced to make their way to a field outside of Dunnottar Castle in the town of Stonehaven along the northeast coast of Scotland. Once here, teams found their Road Block clue which required that teams complete three tasks commonly seen in the Highland Games: the Caber Toss, the Hammer Throw, and the Shotput. Once all three tasks were completed, teams could receive their next clue. Members finishing this task included Heather, Derek, Ken, Aaron, Zach, Michael, Jill, Teri, and Andre before they received the next clue.
5. Which team was eliminated in Leg 3?

Answer: Dennis and Andrew

After the Road Block, teams were told to run directly to their Pit Stop, the nearby Dunnottar Castle, at which their mat would be waiting for them. Despite the fact that a Fast Forward was collected during this leg of the race, Derek and Drew, who remained at the front of the pack during the entirety of the leg, were first to step on the Pit Stop mat, claiming a second consecutive victory.

They were shortly followed by Ken and Gerard. Unfortunately, despite the fact that they claimed the Fast Forward and had a chauffeured limo drive them to the Pit Stop, Dennis and Andrew were too far behind to make up the ground necessary to prevent their elimination.
6. Departing from the Pit Stop in Leg 3, to which country did teams need to travel in Leg 4?

Answer: Portugal

Leaving from Dunnottar Castle, teams were instructed to walk to Stonehaven Harbour, slightly over a mile away. Once there, teams would find their next destination by finding a message in a bottle. In this case, the wine bottle received instructed teams to make their way to the city of Porto, Portugal, a flight of more than one thousand miles. Once there, teams needed to make their way to the Vila Nova de Gaia and Calem Port Lodge at which they would be receiving their next clue. All teams flew from Edinburgh to Porto via London though some teams also flew through Germany.
7. Which Detour task in Leg 4 was completed by the most teams?

Answer: Old School

Once at Calem Port Lodge, teams found their Detour clue, a choice between 'Old School' and 'New School'. In 'Old School', teams needed to jump into a nearby boat and deliver a barrel of wine to a specific restaurant downriver. In 'New School', on the other hand, teams loaded three crates of wine onto a truck and delivered them to three different restaurants in Porto.

After each delivery, a signature was needed to finish the task. Teams completing 'Old School' included Ken and Gerard, Kevin and Drew, Aaron and Arianne, Teri and Ian, and Michael and Kathy while Andre and Damon, Flo and Zach, Heather and Eve, and John Vito and Jill, completed 'New School'.
8. Other than a plane, what other mode of transportation was mandatory for Leg 4 of the race?

Answer: Train

After the Detour tasks were completed, teams were instructed to take another form of major transportation (for the first of many times during the race): the train. Teams needed to head to Gate F at the Estadio do Restelo in Lisbon, but to do this they needed to hop onto a train at São Bento Train Station in Porto and take it over two hundred miles to their destination. Once at this Olympic soccer stadium, teams would locate their next clue. Because of the train schedules, all teams departed from Porto on the same train at 7:00pm.
9. The Road Block task in Leg 4 required team members to play which sport?

Answer: Soccer

At Estadio do Restelo, Gate F in Lisbon, teams found the Road Block clue (the first Road Block of the race for all teams to complete since no one took the Fast Forward) requiring that one member of each team hop onto the soccer field one at a time in order to block a penalty kick from a local soccer-playing teenager. Once a single kick was blocked, teams would receive their next clue. Ken, Zach, John Vito, Damon, Drew, Heather, Michael, Ian, and Arianne all completed this Road Block task and departed.
10. Which team was eliminated in Leg 4?

Answer: Heather and Eve

After completing the Road Block task in Leg 4, teams were instructed to walk to the Pit Stop, the Torre de Belem in Lisbon, about one and a half miles away from the Road Block. The first team to arrive at the Pit Stop was Heather and Eve, but they only achieved this by taking a taxi to the Pit Stop.

As a result, they received a thirty-seven minute penalty and fell to last place, being the fourth team eliminated from the race. In their place, Ken and Gerard became the first team to arrive, and had Heather and Eve not taken a penalty, Aaron and Arianne would have arrived last.
