Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, Hurley is seen (in a dream) feasting on the various contents of the compound pantry. Which brand of potato chips is he seen eating?

Answer: Ripple

Information about the Ripple brand of potato chips is scarce, but one may safely assume the brand is dated back to the Apollo bar (which Hurley has never heard of, intentionally draws attention to the age). Among the other food choices (which Hurley and Rose find upon inventory) include Dharma Initiative Salad Dressing (ranch composite), canned tuna, cereal, peanut butter, and so on. One may also safely assume that the ice cream sundaes and TV dinners which appeared in the dream were nonexistent in reality, without the known presence of a refrigerator. (Recall that Hurley had told Locke in an earlier episode that he hoped the hatch contained TV dinners.) Through Hurley's generosity, the islanders once again have contact with processed and packaged food!
2. What food was Hurley consuming when Jin entered?

Answer: Milk

Hurley's dream consisted of many seemingly bizarre components, the majority of which most likely contained deeper meaning. In the past, dreams and "visions" seen by the viewers have been filled to capacity with symbolic representations. In Claire's dream, she discovered an empty cradle (with Oceanic airplanes swirling on a mobile above), a "ghost child", and Locke with one black and one white eye.

In Locke's "vision" he apparently witnessed a bloody Boone repeating a phrase true to his past, his mother, and the beech craft tumbling from the sky (which was then found in the jungle). Hurley's dream is no exception.

As soon as Jin appears, Hurley stops drinking from his milk carton and pauses in confusion for a moment- take a closer look at that carton. Under the "Missing" appears a black and white photo of Walt.

Not coincidentally, the man in the chicken suit is also from Hurley's past (the man at the gas station, who recognized Hurley as the lottery winner). The exchange of Korean/English lines between Hurley and Jin added a further extension of the usual (and Jin gave Hurley a direct message, which remained present and relevant throughout the episode: Everything is going to change) as well as the man in the mascot having Kate's voice and the notorious bleeping of the alarm before Hurley comes back to reality.
3. In Hurley's first flashback, which interconnects with one seen in the episode "The Numbers", Hurley watches the winning numbers in the lottery drawing realizes he has the $114 million ticket. After telling his frantic mother it was something he had eaten which caused the fall, Carmen replied, "Yes, it must be something you ate because you eat ________, and you don't exercise."

Answer: Basura

We hear once again that Hurley won on the 16th week, a near-record jackpot- and he kept it secret until the end of the episode.
Hurley's mother insisted that Hurley needed to change his life, including his eating and exercise habits. Hurley folded the ticket into his pocket and replied, "Maybe I don't want it to change".
4. Throughout the episode, Hurley is seen gazing at the lottery ticket and returning it to his pocket many times. What shape surrounds the "mega number", 42, on the lottery ticket?

Answer: Square

Hurley knew that everything was about to change, and was extremely reluctant to reveal that he had won. He is seen unfolding and refolding the ticket in Mr. Clucks and in the van with Johnny. Note that Hurley is accused of eating an 8 piece (a la numbers) chicken combo by his slightly oppressive boss, Randy, who we have seen before. Irony shows itself again in the fact that Hurley's boss Randy is indeed the same Randy who was seen taunting Locke at the box company office... which Hurley became owner of shortly after collecting his fortune. Perhaps Randy should have thought twice before asking Hurley if he were made of money (and prompting his classic line, "Dude, I quit!").
5. Upon being released from the pit in which they were being held Sawyer tells Michael, "I guess we can all ____ ______ together."

Answer: sue Oceanic

This was one of Sawyer's newest and most comical phrases, voicing the survivor's less-than-satisfied attitude of the Oceanic airliner service, upon his "rescue". There are three "Others" present, and the trio is revealed to be not the notorious "Others" at all-- but rather the survivors of the presumed doomed tail section of Flight 815! Among them are the deep-voiced Nigerian man (who is most likely not from Flight 815, but rather the beech craft), Ana-Lucía (with whom Jack had a previous encounter in the airport before boarding the plane), and a secretive woman who introduces herself to Michael as Libby. (Look closely at Libby, she looks so familiar... especially when compared to a screen shot of the blonde-haired woman aboard the "Others" speedboat, who threw the hand grenade and blew up the raft!) Other theories speculate a resemblance between Libby and the woman seen in the photo with Desmond which Jack discovered in the hatch, or even the woman from the "orientation" film.
To see the comparison between Libby and the raft bomber (previously speculated to be Alex, the long-lost daughter of Danielle Rousseau) view the screen capture photos at:

6. Sayid confirms Jack's theory that a geothermal generator is most likely the island's power source.

Answer: False

It was Sayid who predicted (his own theory) the area behind the concrete to be a geothermal generator-- the island's power source. Sayid drew the comparison between the presence of the 8-to-10 foot thick concrete surrounding the source and the incident at Chernobyl.
Chernobyl was the worst nuclear power disaster in history, and occurred in April 1986. The Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant (located in the Ukraine, formerly the USSR) has remained inactive since a reactor-- reactor number 4-- exploded during a testing (at 1:23 a.m.). The nuclear explosion released one hundred times the amount of radiation released by the atomic bombs, and the effects of which were felt for decades after the incident. The tragedy represented a fatal blend of human and mechanical error, and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant is now entirely encased in a concrete shelter (to contain the radioactivity still present).
Leaky, hot pipes ran across the low ceiling (which fueled Kate's shower water... how about that scene?). Jack showed Sayid the magnetic attraction of the key, to which Sayid commented, "Interesting." (The electromagnetic forces may explain the bizarre compass directions, and possibly account for shipwrecks of misguided watercraft.)
7. Does Shannon have any lines in this episode?

Answer: No

While Charlie carries baby Aaron (and questions Hurley about the hatch), Claire takes a peaceful stroll down the beach and encounters an object in the surf---the bottle of messages from the raft. She and Shannon bring the bottle to Sun, and Claire says they believe Sun should decide what to do.
Shannon hands the bottle to Sun, but does not speak. She appears later at the end of the episode as well, sharing food with Vincent by the campfire (with whom she has become attached, it seems). She does not have any lines, however.
While the survivors enjoyed the rewards of Hurley's generosity, a distraught Sun is seen burying the bottle in the sand. The fate of the raft, for the time being, remained buried as well. The act of burying the bottle may represent either Sun's denial or acceptance of the truth.
8. Which of the following did Locke say first to Hurley?

Answer: "Because he asked, Hugo."

Hurley is in distress over the food situation, knowing that it will soon become out of control and everyone will be angry-- at him. He finds Locke in the hatch compound, looking over a rifle, and asks why Locke told Charlie (about the food). Locke replies, "Because he asked, Hugo."
How Locke came to know Hurley's real name remains unknown, though Locke proceeded to address Hurley as Hugo four times. Hurley argued that Locke should have listened (to his warning about the hatch) and now everything was going to change. Change seemed to be a prevailing theme in this episode, as Hurley recalled knowing that after becoming a millionare everything would change as well. Locke replied that change is good, and when Hurley decided he wanted to quit the "job" of being in charge of the food, Locke stated, "I'm sorry, Hugo... you don't get to quit."
Hurley's first response was to use the remaining sticks of dynamite to blow up the hatch altogether, but he was convinced otherwise (by Rose). The dramatic use of constant flashbacks between Hurley and Rose's confrontation and the night on which Hurley's life changed created a powerful effect and led to Hurley's decision to give the food out right away. The survivors enjoyed a happy, cheerful celebration on the beach and praised Hurley, but was the opening of the hatch a good event, or the opening of a Pandora's Box? (Note that many boxes have been mentioned, including Locke's company and the computer used to enter the code.)
9. Yet another "Dharma" logo appears inside the area in which the tail section survivors are located. Which best describes the symbol which can be distinguished in the center of this octagon?

Answer: Does not match a previously seen symbol

After being freed from the pit, the three survivors of the raft became acquainted their former captors while trekking through the jungle. Libby revealed to Michael that there had been 23 survivors of the tail section (originally). They stop upon arriving to another bunker door (which is remarkably similar to that which Desmond used to exit station 3 from the hatch compound) in the middle of the jungle. Ana-Lucía knocks six times and the door is answered by yet another new survivor.

Inside a tunnel passageway the group finds what remains of the 23 survivors... two.

The similarities between the entrances-- and the fact that there is yet another Dharma logo on the wall, straight ahead as Ana-Lucía leads the group inside-- suggest that this underground compound is in fact connected in some way to Desmond's station. Perhaps the same compound extends beneath the entire island, or this could be another of the six stations entirely! Also notice the symbol in the center of this logo appears to be the third of those seen thus far, and is a "+" symbol. Recall that the logo on the shark had a horizontal bar. Perhaps these represent positive (+) and negative (-) electromagnetic charges of opposite ends of the island? Also, special attention may be drawn to a small yet possibly significant detail: Notice among the rope-like vines dangling in front of the door that several are thin and red.

There happens to be a Chinese proverb which involves the concept of an invisible red line which connects all people to those significant ones (both lovers and enemies) whom they are destined to meet in their lifetime. Along with the black and white references, the color red has made more than an equal share of relevance throughout the episodes.
10. Does Bernard speak to Sawyer in this episode?

Answer: Yes

An important detail which may possibly concern Bernard: A flashback of Claire's, located in the Sydney airport before boarding the plane, was not included in the final episode of season one but did appear on the season one "Lost" DVD special features. In the scene, Claire is drinking coffee and has a chance encounter with the pilot of Flight 815. She shares her story of the psychic telling her to give the baby to a couple in Los Angeles (which resulted in her being on the plane, as the psychic's plan all along). The pilot told Claire about his mother whose tarot lady suggested she would find a new love. As a result, his mother had dumped her boyfriend, Bernard (whom he described as a short computer programmer with a bad haircut). The story ended with Bernard's company netting a worth of $30 million and his mother still waiting for her love... coincidence? It is not yet known whether the two Bernards were indeed the same person, or if this was yet another example of names being repeated throughout flashbacks to show similarities in the past lives of the survivors.
In the present, the moment which some viewers had anticipated arrived when the man who had previously opened the bunker door approached Sawyer, Michael and Jin and inquired about a woman named Rose "back where they came from". (He is answered first by Sawyer, and then Michael.)
This confirmed that the group was indeed from the tail section of the plane, and that Rose's faith in her husband being alive proved true what she believed all along.
In the final scene, Rose is seen on the other end of the island saving a candy bar for Bernard's "sweet tooth", clutching his ring around her neck and smiling.
